It had just fallen on the arrow keys a little bit and Thinkpads are pretty good about resisting spillage, anyway.

I keep my bedside porn, movie and TV show laptop handy, just in case. Has about 30 gigs of HD space left, which is enough to get by, for a night.

Thinkpads have little channels for liquid to go through, just in case there's a spill. They aren't like those steel enforced "tough laptops" or whatever they call those computers built to withstand the rain or debris flying around at construction sites, but they're a lot more likely to survive a spill than a MacBook.

Just out of curiosity, are they stable for when you use them with music software? Any crashes at all? I feel like they'd be reliable and wouldn't mind having one as a backup.

Story time, skip if you don't care.
I was the first person to go on before a semi-famous DJ. There were two other DJs sandwitched in between myself and the headliner, so I was the guy playing to an empty venue, as they opened the doors. Before I finished up, I glanced over and saw the headliner standing to the side. I knew something was up, because he wasn't supposed to go on for another two and a half hours. Long story short: blue screen of death, Crash Report: 0000000x1 or whatever, but at least he had everything on a thumb drive. I always have a Windows 7 CD in my laptop bag. I would have been able to re-format his computer, on the spot, before he went on, but the venue folks were all "Nope, no internet. Yea, I realize there's a wireless network named after our club, but we don't know the password, have no clue where the router is, don't care, etc." So no point in trying since I wouldn't have been able to download any drivers.

In the end, I let him borrow the porn laptop because I don't care who you are, you're not getting my primary macbook with all my poo poo on it, after you just bricked your own laptop. His stage tech drove me to my office so I could get on my work computer, download a driver for a DJM 900, toss it on a thumb drive, bring it back and instal it on my porn laptop.

By the time he goes on, I'm thinking "this outta be interesting" because I could see he had a VGA cable hooked up and was trying to do something with the "video dj" portion of Serato. He starts off the set and for a second, the stage and backdrop lights up with a visualizer. Tough to explain but clearly it wasn't set up to run that way. You could see some of the windows start menu and a sliver of the dialog box that had just poped up saying "Windows has not been activated. Please click here to authenticate your copy of Windows" or whatever.

Eventually, Serato crashed. Not blaming the software at all. That computer can scrape by when running Serato DJ but video is a whole different story and I'm sure his stage visualizer was meant to run on an actual visualization software or something. Instead of turning off the projector and DJ booth effects, he left all the screens running on stage with the VGA cable connected to the laptop. His stage was lit up and showing some of the Serato DJ screen, a little bit of Windows background, the start menu in the bottom left corner and "You must activate Windows" dialogue box which later popped up, in the bottom right, along with my desktop folders for "movies" "tv shows" and "new" which was short for: new porn I'm yet to sort through.

Luniz' "I Got 5 On It" with The Fugees' "Ready Or Not"

Real talk: how many people carry extra laptops with them? A few weeks ago I gigged and one of my friends rolled up. I gave her a hug and failed to notice she had a drink in her hand. As I picked her up a little bit splashed onto my keyboard. Everything was fine, I disassembled and cleaned that night when I came home, and we're good. It had just fallen on the arrow keys a little bit and Thinkpads are pretty good about resisting spillage, anyway.

Today I got another laptop and am just finishing up making it ready to gig. I guess what I'm asking is: does anyone here have any good stories in connection to such a major failure?

I always bring 2 recently prepared USBs setup with Rekordbox. I am much happier to plug my laptop into the club's CDJs since I get my whole collection with more cue points and the bonus of using Traktor, but worst case I can always just play a standard set in case they have older equipment and forgot to link the CDJs. If the venue doesn't have CDJs and mixer then I'll admit I don't bother to bring anything extra though I'll still bring along the USBs and a controller. I only had to do that a couple times though I'm sure now that I'm taking a break from Korea it might be a bit more often.

My story is I booked one guy to play one of my bass nights since the stuff he produced was pretty nice and he was recommended by another good producer I know. He came in with a big laptop with an old version of Traktor Scratch on it. Since that venue was nearby where I lived, I would always bring my controller for a HARD backup in case my own DJs didn't prepare right or didn't know how to connect to CDJs (if you're the promoter then the event is YOUR responsibility after all). Turns out he had a pirated version of Traktor which was too old to connect to CDJs, he didn't have timecode CDs to do it the old fashioned way, AND his pirated version of Traktor did not recognize my S2 controller (how the gently caress?). Offered him a USB to put his stuff on and just play off the 2000s/Nexus but he said he didn't prep via Rekordbox (it's nice but seriously you can just skip around fine with just timecode if you know the music). If it was a bigger venue I would have told him that he can't play, but it was smaller and the venue likes to give opportunities to newer people in the community so I let him use my laptop hooked up to my S2 since he wasn't familiar at all with how Traktor is mapped out to CDJs.

I'm someone that is pretty humble, know that I prefer to laptop DJ when that gets poo poo on by a lot of people, and even I was pretty pissed off. Most of you probably know (well maybe not tower pc dude) but if you are using CDJs, bring 2 USBs (3 is better) and make sure you know how old they are since you might have to bring CDs instead. Lots of Korean DJs still bring a massive CD booklet with them out of habit. If you are using a laptop, make sure you know how old their stuff is since you might not be able to connect to their stuff. Learn to beatmatch, know your tracks, know how to play off of timecode and bring backup USBs in case your rig dies. If you aren't using the industry standard then I think it's on you as the DJ to make sure you're good to go. If the venue doesn't have anything then I think it depends on the arrangement made via promoter/DJ/venue. Show up to the venue early and sound check. In the end, it is going to be the promoter's fault if you gently caress up but that will make it hard as hell for you to find more work as a DJ considering there are so many these days, and if it isn't a big venue then you tend to be your own promoter anyway.

(For the record I was mostly a promoter first, DJ afterward so I tend to look at it more like a business if it is my event. The clubs in Korea are not always the most professional but the group I worked with always was and always still is with no bullshit because most of the international bookings come from that group. tl;dr just approach DJing as another job and if you want to keep doing it then be professional even if it's a job where you are drunk half the time.)

I usually just carry a couple USB sticks with backup mixes, SL time code, and enough songs that'll last an hour or two as backups. On top of that, sometimes I'll carry an extra laptop stand, my SL box in case anything weird happens, and a record (if I'm playing on turntables) that I can use if the switchover somehow fucks up. I need to start carrying a mic and extra RCA cables though because using the headphones as a mic isn't always the best idea.

That being said, I should really buy a Jetpack backpack.

I've looked at these, and think the MONO packs seem a lot sturdier. I have the mono 365 for my big rig. Holds: laptop, cables, stand, 2 X1's, maschine, midifighter, headphones, sound card, mic, with plenty of room to spare. They don't show it in their pics for some reason, but the part that rests against your back is super well padded in a way that keeps pressure off of your spine.

Seconding the vote for MONO packs. I have the Kondensor and it's the best gig bag I've ever used. I can fit my laptop, Traktor box/cables, laptop stand, X1 controller, records, spare adaptors/etc with room to spare

Speaking of gig bags, my previous one which perfectly fit my S2... doesn't even come close to fitting my S8.

Looking at MONO's packs, they look super nice, but all fall significantly short of the 58.5cm width of this loving spaceship.

I've been lugging it around in the original box (it has a handle on it, at least) but that won't last. Any ideas? A backpack would be amazing (I'd really like to be able to bike to gigs) but at this point I just want to carry a single bag to gigs at all.

One of my friends suggested a comedy option of wrapping the stupid thing in a beach towel and using a portfolio bag. It's looking more and more like I might actually have to do that...

I do this for my lights. For my controller, however, I probably wouldn't. Maybe commission a bag to be made?

Holy gently caress is this month nuts. 23 gigs between playing guitar, singing, and DJing. I also took the month off from drinking, which is a bad choice in hindsight. Just hung up flyers for NYE, talked to the pub owner, and have one last gig tonight before I allow myself to sip sweet, sweet beer on NYE.

I'm at the point where when I'm done playing I just want to cry. Make the pain stop. Bring on the alcohol.

Also, those MONO bags look awesome. If I could sneak an extra laptop in there I would be able to gig confidently with just a backpack.

You could easily fit multiple laptops in the one I have, at least (the Kondensor). There's a laptop sleeve in the compartment closest to the "back" which can also fit a handful of records comfortably. This is where I put my X1 (including it's travel case), my laptop stand, my power brick, and my timecode records (if I'm using them) or narrow cd wallet. It's the same depth as the laptop sleeve so you could slide a second laptop in there.

The one that Old Man Pants is the shoulder bag (I think?) which has a different organization, but based on how much stuff he is able to fit in it, I'm guessing you could make multiple laptops work there too. He showed me how he had it packed, but it was probably in a dark strip club so I can't vouch for my memory on that

Anybody have experience with Traktor's controller manager? I'm trying to create a very simple custom track deck mapping for my F1, and the mapping itself is no problem, but I'm having some trouble mapping LED feedback to the F1's sixteen RGB pads.

The only way I can get the software to 'see' the pads is with a 'Traktor.Kontrol.F1.User' mapping. I select the pad - for example, Pad 13, the bottom left one (assigned to play/pause) but I can't get the LED to hold a state in any colour - they just blink in that colour when I hit the pad. Is it possible to have them hold their colour/brightness state?

A couple months ago I had a situation where half of my speakers and lights were going in and out for no apparent reason. Other electronics were plugged into the same circuit and were still on. After about half an hour of this we discovered that the subwoofer was rattling a plug out of socket. Right when I think I've seen everything something bizarre happens that I hadn't thought of.

So this is what I walked into tonight.

The board in the back with the small board laying on top of it is the one routed into the pub's sound. There was a space station sized drum kit occupying everything to the left of the board. Note the immense poo poo gently caress nest of cables laying all over the floor.

They had a JBL EON 18" subwoofer that was in front of the house subs (pictured below my black/yellow bin). I picked it up to move it and there was standing water in the post hole on top of it. It poured out on my shirt.

I hope the band isn't upset with how quickly I moved all of their garbage so that I could play tonight. They left it from NYE as they are playing tomorrow night. I thought I was bad about certain aspects of maintaining gear, but this is a goddamned embarrassment.

The set was great, otherwise. Lots of girls dancing, tips, and out by two. Holy gently caress that stage tonight, though.

Yeah but it doesn't sound as good as picking two tracks that work together. Just don't overuse filters, they can sound good if used right, but oftentimes they just make it sound sloppy (to be fair, average Joe probably doesn't care and/or won't notice), and if you use them too much they will become a crutch (know from experience). Some genres form themselves better to them.

As always, easy is a world away from good.

Yeah, dry mixing is where it's at. I don't ever touch the filter knob, partially because I spin french house and there's a reason it's often called "filter house".

I've started using some effects recently though, mostly echo out in Serato. What a neat effect.

So I've DJed for a couple years now- held down a restaurant/lounge gig for a few months and can handle most types of gigs. I can transition song to song flawlessly, I'm pretty handy with effects/loops/layering, and my production experience has given me a reasonably good ear for elements to mix together. But I feel like I'm ready to step up my game- does anyone have some resource suggestions for more intermediate and advanced techniques in DJing? Practice routines, habits, advanced blending/layering, 4 deck mixing, and a bit of scratching would be nice. Even some resources in live remixing/ beat juggling would be nice. I really admire guys like Hatiras, Deko-Ze, Richie Hawtin, Maceo Plex, would love to get some of their smoothness.

I'm unfortunately pretty awful at motivating myself to practice, or indeed knowing what an effective practice routine would be. Unless I have a planned set in mind, I generally end up aimlessly piddling through a couple tracks or setting cue points and getting bored rather quick. What should I be doing?

I'm mostly self taught and YouTube is a great resource, but often I find it hard to find an appropriate tutorial- there are plenty of tutorials for beginners and advanced users, but I've found myself in no mans land after learning the basics, as I don't really have a more experienced DJ friend to jam with/oearn from (I recently moved).

What kind of music do you play? You play at a restaurant/lounge so it sounds like you do the open format thing but you're also into dudes like Richie Hawtin and Maceo Plex. If you do the open format thing, I highly recommend checking out Red Bull Thre3Style sets. There's a lot of DJs that have done Thre3style that you can learn from. If done right you can incorporate them into your sets and have the They incorporate classic techniques like scratching and beat juggling but also throw in some "new" stuff like word play and tone play (new in quotations because it's been around for a while but recently became popular). If done right you can incorporate this kind of stuff into your sets and the public can behind it.

One of my favorite tone play routines:

I produce Synthwave, but I typically mix Deep/tech, sometimes NuDisco and House for a more upbeat set. If I had my choice of what to play, I'd stick to those.

My job taught me a lot about reading a crowd and playing to the atmosphere however. Trained me on genre hopping and transitioning between majorly different timbres, rythms, and bpms. So I'm alright at that.

My current setup is a DDJ SX2 w/ Serato- which I got because that's what I used at my job (SX1 actually, but y'know).

Tone playing might be the way to go- lots of possibilities with that and a controller.
