there were actual cases of people with bad background checks driving ubers, right? i'm calling bullshit on them even spending the...$50?...to get even a scummy background check.

the latest rapist was using his wife's account to drive for uber, so the background checks are unbelievably easy to bypass.

Uber will have an earth-shattering IPO. The financials will be great, the growth will be staggering and everyone knows Uber and likes the service so mom-and-pop investors will be clamoring for shares. Home run. Nobody will care about all the bad behavior anymore because money talks and bullshit walks, as Goethe once wrote. Uber haters (and there are many) will go nuts, which will add to the fun. Airbnb and Dropbox will go public too, as Fred Wilson predicts, but Uber will be the sensational deal of the year.

he's probably right

but ughhhhhh

it's going to be really extra sad when uber implodes and mom'n'pop investors are left holding the bag instead of eminently hatable VCs

in India they didn't bother at all until after a rash of assaults because the laws said they didn't have to run livery drivers through background checks

apparently the laws did (as new delhi's gov has said that uber has to follow adjusted radio taxi regs), but uber believes itself to be a pure IT company like amazon and only subject to regulations like amazon in india

uber's no longer banned in new delhi with the gov saying "just follow radio taxi regs" but uber is petulantly saying "nah, you've misclassified us and radio taxi regs are too onerous"

i was looking at my laser printer the other day and was thinking "oh man it would be great if i could use the fuser to make toast". so ofc then i went to open it up and reprogram one of the paper sizes to toast but when i tried to open it there was just a chip that had hitler and stalin on it that said "lol closed source fucker!"

i stumbled outside, fell to my knees, and wailed at the sky and lo did the clouds part and the visage of rms appear. my voice wavered as i made my desperate plea: "rms save me, for i am being oppressed!" his gaze fell upon me, chins rippling beneath the beard of the blessed as he was forced to look downward onto such a lowly creature as i, and the heavens did boom "have you ever thought that maybe the dolphins want it?"

ughhhh a terrible writer and a terrible article. guess i'm going to have to get my own tech bubble news from now on

like this

http://www.engadget.com/2014/12/29/can-i-stay-with-you-airbnb/

quote:

So you've decided to make some extra money renting out your apartment on Airbnb, only to realize that you need your own place to stay in the meantime. Don't worry, there's a service for that. Welcome to CISWYWIRMPOA? (Can I Stay with You While I Rent My Place on Airbnb?), a site that lets you arrange to stay with another Airbnb host. This "Airbnb for Airbnb" (their words) is largely ad hoc. Once you pair with someone, it's up to you to decide on payments -- the service suggests splitting your rental revenues or offering to host your new friend, but there aren't any firm rules. Yes, it's a bit absurd, but it shows that Airbnb is now big enough that some hosts want their own support network.

i found this logic compelling

quote:

But you know [a crash is] going to happen. For one thing, there were more IPOs in 2014 than in any year since 2000. Some will remember what happened back in 2000 right after all those companies had all those IPO. Surely it cannot be a good sign when a bunch of money-losing tech companies go racing into the public markets. For the past few years the VCs who claimed there was no tech bubble supported that assertion by pointing out that the crazy valuations were confined to privately held companies. Thus the public wasn't exposed to the risk. But now those companies are going public. Doesn't that mean the public is now exposed?

Taibi wrote about the first bubble in Griftopia and made a joke about these IPOs being "watermelon investments," the IPO is a watermelon with a bow tied around it that's been tossed out a window. if your money isn't out by the time it hits the ground, you lose.
