I remember seeing Phil Foglio at a Comic Con or some other convention about a decade or so back, and instead of promoting Girl Genius or, uh, whatever else he does (old school Magic art?), it was just a bunch of prints of cartoon titties.

Archipelago has proportionally less hidden information the lower the player count goes, though. You may not be able to guess what your opponent has quite so easily, but you know two of the three scoring conditions so it's less important.

Honestly I think Ticket to Ride is one of the best "hidden victory condition" games, because the whole point is to figure out what your opponent's goals are and to stop them from doing that while advancing your own.

He and his wife used to do cartoon porn, basically. They stopped when they had kids. They also used to illustrate a column in Dragon, and have done a couple of reasonable comics. Buck Godot in particular is good.

I would say yes if that's the ultimatum because Kovalic's simplistic, newspaper comic-style stuff isn't that terrible, it's just tired and doesn't really deserve to be as prominent as it is. Foglio's art is bad in an unsettling way. It's hard to look at, and whenever people rave about how much they loved his old Magic card art I feel like I've entered the loving bizarro universe.

Kovalic's art is basically really good for Munchkin, and not good for anything else.

People like Foglio's Magic art entirely for the novelty factor, if it wasn't so different from Magic's usual art style no-one would care about it at all.

I don't even mean it in a "they're both bad so they're made for each other" way. Munchkin's only notable feature is that it's chock full of one-liner jokes, puns, and D&D references. Having art that looks like a cleaned-up version of the notebook doodles kids do when they're bored in class is thematically fitting.

Got to sit down and play a 7 hour game of Avalon Hill's Dune. If you haven't heard of this game, i'd really recommend playing it by any means possible. It is fantastic but don't take my word for it, check out this informative video:

Was super excited to get this game out of its box here in ole Pennsylvania.

When I played in Austin, I often played with pretty aggressive wargamers. Our games lasted maybe 3-4 hours. However, in Pennsylvania I had a whole bunch of traditional game loving folks who had actually played it before, read the Dune novels, and actually liked the idea of making deals. I had to set up a whole extra room in order to accommodate for the degree of strategy meetings folks needed to have.

I got stuck with the Bene Gesserit and I wrote down that Harkonen would win on turn 6. What ended up happening was that my troops spread around the world as spiritual advisers and after partnering up with the Fremen, I made a move to take over all of Arakkis at once!

Only...the Attreides were on to my plans and blew up the barrier protecting the northern fortresses from the sand storm while the storm itself blew onto the fortress my Fremen allies wanted to take. On the next turn, all of the Bene Gesserit save 4 were murdered during the storm phase of the next turn.

Ultimately, the Guild won on the last turn by default as no one could muster enough troops to stop them.

After playing, I decided I really need to try the 9 player variant for this game. I can't even imagine what chaos it would create given the powers they've given the Ix and the Bene Tleilaxu...

This is why replacing Gloom's Edward Gorey-ish theme with Munchkin is so baffling. The theme is basically all Gloom has going for it - why not replace it with a lovely D&D parody?

Archipelago. :v:

Of course, as always, it'll depend on what exactly you want out of the auctioning and how large a part you want it to be of the game. It's been snuck in in various incarnations into everything from Monopoly Power Grid to Cyclades on the one hand, where it's meant to actually be a matter of outbidding (or bidding up) the opponent, to stuff like Going Going Gone and Panic on Wall Street, where it's more about managing confusion and gambling.

In the two player game each player gets two objectives, with the Pacifist and Separatist removed. I've found tracking objectives in a two player game much more manageable than in a multiplayer match most of the time.

The game needs more loving player aids and game tracking than is in the box though. I've gotten some good print outs for objective references, but I'd really want to make a custom player board for tracking how close end-game conditions are to possibly happening.

If you like Keyflower you should try League of Six by Vladimir Suchy, who did Last Will. You have a circle of six towns each supplying goods of different types, guards and horses; the types can be chosen within limits, but the amounts vary each turn. You start by bidding guards to take the spot of your choice, with the winner paying the loser to move on. The catch is that the loser doesn't want to move too far, as moving also costs guards that you could be using to bribe someone else. Once everyone is in a town, you choose what you're going to get from it. Goods score points when used to fill orders, but horses let you choose which order will be filled first. The trick is that you get a bonus if your order is completed, you're under no obligation to pick an order you can fill, and if you can't fill an order yourself, everyone else has to fill it for you. So you can get screwed out of the goods you want and still score well while depriving other players of goods they need to achieve their own goals.

Vegas Showdown has an interesting multiple simultaneous auctions mechanic. You can only win one auction per round, but if you get outbid at one auction you can just go to a different auction instead. The bidding ends when everyone's got a winning bid.

Cargo Noir is a slow motion auction. You bid on a batch of goods on your turn, and if it makes it all the way to your turn again without being outbid, you get that stuff; but you're very limited on actual turns. Fighting one coin at a time over the good stuff is just too slow to work, so you have to try to bid high enough to win on the first try, without wasting money.
