I don't think this has been mentioned here yet: Matthias Worch is (and has been) doing some "retrospective" of his level design career on twitch: http://www.twitch.tv/mworch and archived on YT: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVxtZYPTZpkyUmDmgC1yEd_p7iUGaXTjL He's already covered early Doom stuff including Memento Mori 2. I think he's planning to look at Beyond Belief (Quake episode) today at 2 PM Pacific. He intends to go all the way up through stuff he's done for Sin, Wheel of Time, and probably other things ending in Dead Space 2.

haveblue posted:Descent 2 wins because it was done by Type O Negative and one of the guys from Skinny Puppy. Actually, only one song was by Type O Negative -- a shortened instrumental of their preexisting song "Haunted" -- and maybe two at most were by Ogre. The rest were done by the same in-house music team that did Descent 1's soundtrack, surprisingly enough. I feel like the PSX version of Decent 1 was a rest run for them to do a Redbook audio soundtrack; the production doesn't sound quite as polished. But they got it right when Decent 2 came out. Another techno/industrial/metal soundtrack in this same vein is the one for Sierra's weird 2D deathmatch platformer Hunter/Hunted. Also in-house as far as I can tell.

Speaking of Type O Negative and first person shooters, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8T-ucdIAiW0 that's quite a choice for such game

Speedrunning them is only counter-intuitive in the sense that the games are built on the supposition that you should solve all the puzzles and save your fellow Mudokons.

I want to play a Descent game and as I have all of them on GOG, was wondering wich one has the less confusing maps? I never really got into Descent 1 because I ended lost with the whole flying around. Is Descent 3 easier in this regard?

Descent 2 has the thief bot which is a gigantic pain in the rear end though. I'd start with Descent 1.

You can just savescum your way through Descent if you get lost, it's pretty much crucial to know the level and where the exit is so you don't get screwed when escaping.

Just came here to post that too! Quake 2 is coming up in a few mins. I thought Quake 2 single player was awesome and I don't care what anyone says otherwise.

I saw the Quake 2 run (27 minutes against an estimated 40?), but I looked away for a moment and missed the Duke Nukem one. First episode of Blood in 4 minutes though!

Battleblock is a drat fun game (same with castle crashers) I really want to watch the speedrun. I've seen a bunch of Duke3d speedruns but Blood one surprised me a lot, being really enjoyable. I'd love to see a Shadow Warrior speedrun and a Dark Forces one too on this AGDQ.

This Descent run has gotten a little boring after more than 30 minutes, but man its just chocked full of some incredible execution and tight play. Nothing like the glitch fests of the build engine games.

The Kins posted:Cubeface (the Duke/Blood runner that was just on) also runs SW and he pulls some pretty crazy tricks in that like jumping off his own mid-air grenades. You should follow him on Twitch! Cheers! Gonna see one of his speedruns. Also the Descent speedrun was really boring in my opinion. Yes as Wadjamaloo said is more based on tight play than glitches but hell, for a casual player is just a mess of rubbing your face to walls and weird angles.

Quake 2 was good, it actually made this game fun to break apart with rocket jumps on quad. Blood run was incredible. The way the explosions work in this game is seriously weird. Too bad we couldn't see that near-impossible Duke3D glitch on Dark Side level. And that Descent run, I watched the whole thing but now I feel seriously doozy. To make this post less of ramble, here's the key for Shadow Warrior Complete Edition from Humble Bundle: https://www.humblebundle.com/gift?key=aekSNRZuNek2NFau post here if you grab this one laserghost fucked around with this message at 02:58 on Jan 6, 2015 |

I'm pretty sure I'm now the farthest into Strife that I've ever been. I usually tend to taper off after choosing whether to side with Macil or the Oracle, but this time I'm actually checking out what comes after that choice - the Commons, the Catacombs, the Mines, the Factory... I've been messing with this game for practically a decade now, but I still learn new things about it. For instance, I'd never noticed that your knife gets stronger the more Stamina upgrades you get (curiously, the stat that affects the other weapons, Accuracy, has no impact here). supposedly you can eventually reliably one-shot Acolytes with it, although I'm still finding that while I can one-shot Acolytes some of the time, other times I'm whacking then 4-5 times just as I always was (although this usually results in them gibbing now, as opposed to the normal death I'd usually get). Dumb RNG. Also saw that Veteran Edition added these "Talisman" things; grabbing all three gets you Berserk. That includes one hidden in an entirely new map, apparently? I've found two of them, although admittedly I looked up where the green one was (it's pretty drat obscure otherwise).

What was even going on in the Blood run? It looked like he did a lot of walking through doors. Is there a good writeup of either this route in specific, or a more general "how to break the Build Engine over your knee, and why it works" thing?Guillermus posted:I want to play a Descent game and as I have all of them on GOG, was wondering wich one has the less confusing maps? I never really got into Descent 1 because I ended lost with the whole flying around. Is Descent 3 easier in this regard? Descent 3 has probably the least confusing maps overall and the most direction, and it retains the guidebot from Descent 2. It has the worst map viewer, though. Descent 1 I didn't find at all hard to navigate with occasional glances at the map. Descent 2 is a confusing mess even with the guidebot, and it also has the thiefbot; I wouldn't recommend starting with it or playing it at all.

D3 maps all make at least a passing attempt to feel like real places with sensible layouts; D1 is just a mass of tunnels and rooms oriented in random directions for no reason and D2 is the same thing except 2-3x bigger.

Is there a good writeup of either this route in specific, or a more general "how to break the Build Engine over your knee, and why it works" thing? Don't quote me on this, but Build engine has some serious issues with collisions on voxel objects and doors, and Cubeface21 especially noted that player physics in Blood are "squishy" and you can do more in terms of moving through interconnected sectors without being crushed as in Duke3D. Similar thing applies to his runs on Shadow Warrior, with added bonus of grenade jumping which completely shatters the level progression.
