It certainly was interesting that the piece tries to paint ESPN as a journalistically and ethically consistent enterprise, especially for a deadspin writer.

It could be that the estate didn't want to make any leadership changes while they were trying to sell the team so they kicked the can down to the next owner. Alternately Dumars could do no wrong in Bill Davidson's eyes.

Depending on what he was releasing the Pistons may not have cared. That seems like something that's a bigger concern for the NBA that the Piston's specifically.

Stein worked in Dallas forever. Some of it is probably them feeding him info, but I think he also legitimately got close with guys like Dirk and that clouds things.

It's the same with Adande in LA, that old rear end baseball writer in Boston and Adam Schefter where ever Shanahan is. Guys are at their best in their familiar enviroment.

Almost everyone is a beat writer before they get to those positions so it's only natural that they would have stronger connections with the team they worked the beat on.

This is technically old, but I feel it's worth sharing. Deadspin did a Worst American Sports Journalism of 2014 article the other day. Jeff Pearlman was one of the dishonorees, for a column where he refused to condemn Ray Rice since Jeff had done some lovely stuff as a college student.quote:Ray Rice deserves to be tattooed and branded and damned. He does. But if this job has taught me one thing, it's that no one is black or white. Not Rocker (who has done great work with veterans). Not Vick (an amazing rebound). Not Strawberry. Not Jeff Pearlman—who drove drunk in college; who had unprotected sex in college; who cheated on a test as a freshman. We all do bad things. On occasion, v-e-r-y bad things. For those keeping score: Things Jeff Pearlman will not call your mom about : -drunk driving -not wearing a condom -cheating on tests -beating your girlfriend Things Jeff Pearlman will call your mom about : -dissing him in a comments section

Umm, Unprotected sex is dumb, but it isn't a bad thing. Unless there is more to this story which would make it turn pretty hard.

I'm not saying it is, but ol' Jeff here is the one equating it with drunk driving and domestic abuse.

The next editor Jeff Pearlman meets will be the first. For all the talent he has, dude cannot make his point in a direct fashion. His books are really good, though.
