Gummy Bear Heaven ... It's where I go when the world is too mean.
Well, this is the main series from Ryan North:
http://comicbookdb.com/title.php?ID=35991

34 issues. Actually, it seems like #35 is out, just not entered. The first 33 issues are part of the sale. ComicBookDB shows only two TPBs, but I Amazon shows more, so I guess they weren't put into the DB, either.

Looking at the main page on comiXology, there are two collections (#1 and #4) and four graphic novels, hence the multiple vol 1's.
https://www.comixology.com/Adventure-Time/comics-series/7420

Why the other collections aren't on comiXology, I don't know.

The Adventure Time comics take full advantage of the medium and have creative layouts, lettering, and jokes in the margins. The full cast is employed, and emotional beats are included every so often in addition to the zaniness. To oppose it is to oppose fun itself.

Yeah, the AT comics are generally very good. Not as good as the show for a variety of reasons, but they don't feel like second rate products. The OGNs they released are really creative too.

Hmmm...
I'll pipe in by saying the AT main series and the various mini-series pretty much range from decent to gold. I'd highly recommend all of them. The only ones I can't say for certain are the graphic novels from Danielle Corsetto and Kate Leth, as I haven't read them.

A particular high point for me was the Banana Guard Academy. It's written by Kent Osborne, a storyboard artist for the show. It's kinda insane, covers a wide variety of stories, and has the best character find of 2014, Gingerbread Muto.

One-day All-New X-Men sale on Comixology. While the actual run may not be good, The Arms of the Octopus crossover (with Spock and Hulk) is actually worth reading.

Anyone use a Windows tablet for comics? There's a super cheap one I want to pick up to mess around with, but the Windows 8 comiXology app is (or was ... been a while since I loaded it) super terrible. Is it usable through the browser?

On an iPad, Comixology.com just shoots me to the app when I click "read". I don't think it'd be a great experience if I could get the the browser reader since it doesn't do HD comics (at least on a desktop.)

No, I think it would be bad, too. But the app, at least on the desktop, is a steaming pile.

I think I'm going to pass on it. The tablet doesn't fulfill any need I have. I'm getting to the point where I hate my Nook HD+, but the Windows tablet has a smaller screen, lower resolution, and some people have mentioned poor viewing angles. It'd be fun to have full Windows in the palm of my hand, but I literally only use the Nook for reading comics and can't see myself doing much more with Windows.

This is what I'm looking at:

I can understand the increasing despair over an aging nook and would suggest breaking the bank slightly and getting a refurbed Tab 12.2

Can't say if the refurbs are good but it's a great price for a stellar comic reading experience (I use comixology and perfect viewer)

I'm not really looking to upgrade yet. I was just interested in that Microsoft tablet because of the sale put it in impulse buy territory.

If anything, I'd probably end up with this:

The Windows 8 comiXology app is a horrible mess that should be taken out back and shot

You can probably half rear end it with metro Internet Explorer but I'd recommend a good 16:9 Android tablet instead.

I upgraded from Nook HD+ to a Galaxy S 10.5 last year and it's been amazing, but if you're looking for a budget option, Barnes & Noble's Samsungs are already going for sale every other month (sub-200 for 7-inch, sub-300 for 10.1). Throw in a keyboard case and you've got an ideal comics reader + pseudo-laptop, though the Nexus tablets are dynamite and you could probably nab a good refurb/used.

Alternately, what do you hate about the HD+? When mine was getting sluggish, I did a factory reset and it became much faster and more responsive.

I think it needs one, honestly. I did it once before and it helped a lot.

I guess just that it's not regular Android. Apps I can't run (Amazon App Store, Humble Bundle games). Games are just too much for it. UI like the notification/quick settings bar being difficult (takes me 2-3 tries before I can get them to work). Things like that just adding up. I got a Moto X a couple months back and it's made the Nook worse by comparison.

But I reach for my phone 99% of the time, anyway. I even use it for YouTube/Netflix over my tablet. I only use the thing for comics and it's always been that way. It doesn't make sense to drop a few hundred dollars on something new that I won't get any more use out of.

I wouldnt get a 7 inch tablet for reading comics. I have a half decent 7 inch android (Nexus 7) and its just too small. I am looking to upgrade to a 10 inch myself for comic reading purposes.

Most Android tablets are 16:10, which is slightly better than 16:9 or 4:3 for single pages, but 4:3 is by far the best for spreads. Honestly, 16:10/9 above like 8" for a tablet kind of sucks unless the vast majority of your usage is watching movies.

Yeah good catch, I really should have just said "Not 4:3 like the iPad and Nexus 9". 2 page spreads might look a bit better on iPad if you can read them but they are like 5% of comic pages. I think if he's going digital he is way better off with a 10" tablet that can display a comic page at full size but I guess some people make it work on a 7 or 8" tablet.

Endless Mike
Aug 13, 2003

No 10" tablet can display a comic page at full size since they are 12.55" diagonally, unless all you read is manga.

Just to be obnoxious, a modern comic is 6.875"x10.5" giving an aspect ratio of 1.53 (with a double page being 1.31).

16:9 is 1.78
16:10 is 1.6
4:3 is 1.33

I read my comics on an iPad, and I have no trouble at all reading a double page spread on it.

Yeah, it'd probably be worth it for Saga alone, but that plus a bunch of Brubaker, Hickman, Fraction and Gillen is crazy good. (Also, a million issues of TWD, I guess.) Only thing is it's making me wait a week to see if they throw Bitch Planet in, rather than just buying it finally.

It follows a lot of typical Ennis themes (super heroes are loving assholes). I enjoyed the shock value when it came out, there's some decently funny arcs, and there is some really good rallying against the military industrial complex at the end, but there is a whole middle section that just draaaags. I liked it okay, but I haven't gone back to it since it came out and I've grown less tolerant of the shock value stuff as I've gotten older, so I don't know how it'd hold up.

Do you love continuity porn? Do you love the idea of someone writing a story just to fix the past decade of lovely stories? If so, Avengers Forever is for you!

A lot of people really like it, but I'm not one of them, but even I wouldn't call it the worst use of $4.

To follow up on what Uthor said you have to ask yourself do you really like Garth Ennis, like really, really like him. I like The Boys but it's pretty much a lot of the crude and gross out humor that Ennis does which a lot of people dislike. Have you read The Pro? It's cheaper and with less of a commitment but I think if you read that and would want more with more grossness you'd know where to stand with The Boys.

Actually even if you haven't read The Pro they did a short of it.

Buncha Deadpool on sale: https://www.comixology.com/Deadpool-Kills-the-Marvel-Universe-Sale/page/4921/

Night of the Living Deadpool was decently fun. Probably worth it at sale price if you like Deadpool. Deadpool vs Carnage seemed all right, though I don't know if I'd actually recommend buying it unless you quite like both characters. Thoughts on any of the others? Heard mixed things about Deadpool Killustrated.

Have heard good things about Wade Wilson's War -- anyone want to weigh in on *how* good it is? I quite like the current Deadpool series after issue #6, as well as the just-wrapped Deadpool vs. Hawkeye (and the Deadpool characterization in Remender's Uncanny X-Force).

Yes!

I can recommend issues 1-60 of the 2004-2009 MAX run (plus "The Tyger") as some of my favorite Ennis work. Totally intense. I think the run to 75 after that was fine, too, though not same level.

Anyone have thoughts on whether the other Ennis runs in the sale are worth reading/buying, too?
