isnt it literally just straight up IRC? cant you access it through a normal client?

not really, they use some weird crap in conjunction with it so it tends to malfunction in ways irc doesn't
on top of that, they recently added event crap , like for agdq you have viewers total across restreams, i think, and some weird stuff with chat being grouped or something - if you want to test this, join irc channel of agdq stream and youll see there chat completely different to that of the website

e: for reference, screenshot isn't from pure irc client. either way, you can see by timestamps what's going on

you need oauth to connect, ssl is not supported, 80/443 are not supported for external connections
