(and can't post for 11 years!)

FWIW, I took on a hard sideswipe from an (empty, but with a trailer) 18 wheeler in a 95 Civic.

I was really, really shocked at how well the car held up. Every piece of glass (including the sunroof) that wasn't on the passenger side cracked or spiderwebbed, or outright shattered, and the door was pushed in about a foot (which pushed the seat over a bit, plus pushed in the B pillar, wrinkled the floor pan, and buckled the dash) - but the door still opened and closed just fine, and the car still drove afterwards. Not very well, mind you - the PS pump got crushed, LR wheel rubbed the quarter panel, and the chassis was bent enough that the trunk wouldn't close anymore (and the exhaust stuck out in the middle instead of on the right), which also resulted in having to hold the steering wheel more than upside down to go straight - but I walked away with only bruises and some cuts from broken glass. And drove it home. I had some pretty horrible whiplash and bruises, but walking away from that...

The truck had some damage too - almost ripped the running boards off on one side, cracked the fender, dented the passenger side fuel tank. But if 1995 standards left me with injuries that didn't even require a doctor's visit, newer standards should be worlds better.

The accident was 100% my fault. Back right tire blew out, tried to pull over onto the shoulder, right side dropped onto the dirt, rear end end decided "hey I wanna wag my tail", I did a noob overcorrect, next thing I know there's glass everywhere, some blood, and I'm sideways half on the shoulder, half on the access road. Also a very pissed off driver screaming at me while I'm trying to grab my front bumper from the middle of a highway.

Pip-Pip old chap! Last one in is a rotten egg what what.

So a workmate is building a kit cobra, slowly, with jag running gear. I asked him about the engine and he told me he's got "a proper American V8, a big one"

It's a 302, which I believe is a Windsor? He's saving up for a stroker kit ($1100 from the states) then after that, some unspecified amount for "new heads" so the only piece he's saving will basically be the sump and block.

How can I convince him this is a ludicrous waste of money? It is isn't it? Can anyone recommend either how he can get a better v8 cheaper or some better engines he could put in from common European vehicles?

Tell him a random person on the internet said 302s suck?
I don;t know, if going ford for some reason I'll try to get a 351, stronger block and bearings, but if no reason to go ford of course I'd get a LSx.
Otherwise do the blighty thing and shove a rover/buick 3.5l v8 in it.

$5 a bottle makes it almost worth a plane ticket out there for me. Booze is just so expensive here, sucks when you have no money.
I bought the cheapest bourbon I have ever seen for 20 years. Old green label jim beam is being run out. Was $44 a bottle, going down in price every week by 10% until all gone. Bought a bottle for $25.40. No bottle of any spirits is ever that cheap here. Good times, needed it after all the Christmas poo poo.

Booze is so loving cheap in Indiana, you guys have no idea. I can get a gallon of premium rum for under $20 almost anywhere these days. And if you're okay with lovely rum like Calico Jack it can be had for like $11. ELEVEN loving dollars for a GALLON of rum. Vodka tends to run even cheaper. Sounds like I could afford food and booze there, unlike here.
I recently I ate for the first time in 48hrs just then. So drat tired all the time I usually can't cook, can't sleep and when I do I wake up feeling like crap and more tired. Stomach has been hurting like hell for a while, so grilled some steak, made a parsley/breadcrumb/anchovy/dijon/egg white crust to bake on the steak after grilling.
Made some mayo with the egg yolks and did a potato salad, (because I have so many potatoes, old celery and parsley, plus some bits of dill in an otherwise empty pickle jar.) It is pretty much a scrounging around type of meal besides buying cheap steak. Though when not buying booze I can buy some pantry items to make something half decent so have a fair bit to work with. The old potatoes, celery and parsley are things I bought before/for Christmas lunches dinner, they just keep for ages in my old cyclic defrost fridge. E: potatoes weren't in the fridge of course, but celery wrapped in foil, parsley in a mug with water and a freezer bag on top.

Yes, but... Indiana. Booze is pretty cheap here in Minnesota as well. You can get a 24 pack of Hamm's for under $20, but the downside is that you're drinking Hamm's. One time, I went into my usual liquor store to pick up a case for a friend and the clerks had to have known I was buying for someone else because the cheapest I usually stoop to is Grainbelt Nordeast or Summit. Gotta drink local.

Two nights ago, I got drunk as hell and decided to make oatmeal. I added goat cheese, apricot preserves, and Turkish honey. It was magical. Last night, I drunkenly made a batch of lentil and vegetable stew. I even packed today's lunch in my drunken state, so I'm hella productive after a few shots of Jager.

Yeah, seriously, if he wants an 'All American' V8, and he's not restoring/rebuilding an actual Ford, a SBC is basically always the answer, especially if he can get an LSx. poo poo he could probably get a brand new 425 BHP LS3 crate motor for less than what it would cost to build a 305 up to 325 BHP. There's a reason the small block Chevy V8 has become the stereotypical swap engine - it's the best bang for the buck you can possibly imagine.

It's just a matter of gearbox and drivetrain fitting to one and if any aftermarket EFI could possibly work on one (ie researching if any manufacturer has a default map, has tuning facilities, may be interested in the project for their own benefit etc). Might have been done, might not have, I wouldn't know. If not, get a crate LSx.
It sucks to be the guinea pig, I know that for sure. I was one of the first to run twin 40mm IDFs on a 13B rotary, and one of the first to run haltech EFI on a 12A turbo a long time ago. Lots of time and money wasted not following the norm... Would have been much easier with a single 48IDA and a microtech EFI respectively, but I'm not normal.

There are companies who specialise in American car parts and things like crate engines, and while it's obviously nowhere near as cheap as in the US, it's still an economical way to do things.

His best bet is likely to be a Lexus, BMW or Mercedes V8 if he's needing to get it from a scrappy, but from the sounds of what he's spending, a new crate engine is the way to go.

Conventional wisdom in the Fox Body community holds that north of 500 horsepower is the danger zone, and that meshes with my experiences as well. My own 5.0 makes in the neighborhood of 400 horsepower and has done so, if not reliably, than without catastrophic failure for several years now. They are pretty common engines, cheap and easy to work on while being fairly robust- with the weigh of the immense Fox Body community making parts cheap and plentiful. For a lightweight hot rod, why not? They're a good cheap speed engine- and the original Cobras ran 289s, the 302s little brother (same engine, shorter stroke). I have no idea what prices and availability for them in the UK would be like, though.

Something to keep in mind if he decides to go 351 instead, is that while Chevy 305s and 350s share rough dimensions and engine mounting points (due to the 305 being basically a small bore 350), the 351 and 302 do not. The 351 has a taller deck height, different mounting points, and is slightly heavier (60-100 lbs iirc). Also keep in mind that there are two different 302s and two different 351s. The 302 and 302 HO are mechanically similar, but the HO shares a firing order with the 351 and the regular 302 has its own. The HO is more common in the States. The 351 Windsor and 351 Cleveland are, however, completely different engines with no parts commonality as far as I know. Clevelands were more rare, so go fast parts for them are less common and more expensive. I want to say the Clevelands are heavier, as well. Most 351 anything builds are Windsors.
