Iglesias was on WTF last year and like Larry the Cable Guy and other comics who have really dumb, specific material, he's actually really smart and totally cognizant of what he's doing with his brand. If you go to Vegas, airports, or malls, you'll see kiosks devoted entirely to merchandise with his catchphrase/nickname, "Fluffy." As a Latino, I find him really annoying and as a comedy fan I think he's totally unfunny, but I understand his business savvy. There's a big market out there for Latinos since George Lopez is essentially retired from stand-up and Carlos Mencia's huge drawing days are over. And by Latinos I don't mean "Hispanic comedy fans" but couples who go to the Laugh Factory for date night and just so happen to be Guatemalan. So good for him for getting some money in a tough industry, I say. But if you want to see good Latino comedians, check out Last Comic Standing winner/East LA native Felipe Esparza if you're into dirty, raunchy stories or The Daily Show's Al Madrigal whose POV is more nuanced since he's half-white and grew up lower middle class. I was about to say I really liked one of Iglesias' old bits but I misremembered, it's actually Freddy Soto and he's pretty funny. Alex Reymundo also springs to mind when I think of Latino comics. Al Madrigal is a great story teller. To me his voice sounds a lot like David Cross and he has a similar delivery so I really enjoy him on another level for that. Iglesias is mostly inoffensive and does some pretty good impressions (though I'm pretty sure he's only got, like, three voices). He's much better than Carlos Mencia, but then again, many things are much better than Carlos Mencia, including asbestos, black mold, and the clap.

I'm not a fan of Gabriel Iglesias' comedy, but I've got nothing against the guy. He's managed to make a killer living by catering to the masses with middle of the road (topic wise) comedy. He isn't "pushing the boundaries of comedy" or "making biting social commentary" or whatever the gently caress, but he's not claiming to. Dude just tells jokes about being fat and makes a few million a year. I respect that hustle. Plus, from everything I've ever heard about him, he's apparently the nicest loving dude ever and takes care of the people around him. All of that said, one of the guys that opens for him fairly often, Rick Gutierrez, is a massive oval office whose ego is through the roof simply because he's friends with Gabriel. Seriously, gently caress that guy.

Yea if like, I somehow HAD to go to a show of his I wouldn't be upset. He's really bland and not that funny but he's not offensive or bad or anything, just, like said, a dude who's main focus is his brand so every other joke is "I'M NOT FAT I'M FLUFFY HAHAHAHAHAHAHA" and some high pitched shrieking voice because it's legitimately fairly funny when a big fat guy does a Gremlin style high pitched squeal. And like, yea gently caress it standup is a cut throat thing, if I found a niche that pays out the rear end you'd have to do some serious talking to convince me that the life of someone making ok money at best ~staying true to the art~ is better than making lots of money telling ok jokes forever.

Keep in mind with PYHT its really a low stakes show. Comedians are trying/polishing and most of what Esposito does is crowd work and random musings that may go into an actual set.

So I bought Ari Shaffir's 'Paid Regular' special from CC Direct. I got about 20 minutes in and turned it off which I don't normally do. Am I alone in thinking it wasn't good at all? I saw him live a couple years ago and was entertained, but man. No bueno.

I've only enjoyed Joe Rogan's stand-up of the DeathSquad crew. I was surprised, too. I love JRE now that I gave his stand-up a try and see him as a know-bunches stoner, as opposed to a silly jock.

His special makes me reconsider my whole life. I listened to his podcast, went to see him when he came to town and laughed out loud with my friends I brought with. I hadn't heard any of his stand up since, and was repulsed by his new special. I'm not a negative person, but it was god awful. What is a ~new visual special (I practically know nothing about comedy) that I can cleanse my palette with? I've already watched Chelsea and Bill Burr's new specials.

That Bo Burnham special is goddamn fantastic. I've always been fairly in the middle about him (respected his talent, but just didn't love his work), but that immediately made me a fan. Exact same thing for my girlfriend. But, I had a friend who turned it off ten minutes in because he couldn't put aside his preconceived notion and felt like Bo was "too much of a bro", which I think shows just how poor his understanding of him is. Burnham is funny, and as far as I can tell the only reason people don't like him is because they think he's a "Youtube celebrity" like Pewdiepie or something. I'll echo the statement that I generally hate musical comedians, but he's good enough to overcome it. Having actually watched Shaffir's new special now, I can say that it's at least better than Revenge for the Holocaust. Overall crude and not particularly funny, but there were at least a few points where I laughed whereas I can't remember doing that with his previous special. He still seems like he's trying too hard to get the audiences approval instead of just doing his material and letting people decide whether or not it's funny on their own, but he at least seems to have improved somewhat. I'd give it about a 3-4/10. If nothing else, it made me realize that I haven't seen any truly great standup specials in a while. Bill Burr's newest is pretty solid, but since Stewart Lee released Carpet Remnant World back in 2012 that's kind of been my standard for amazing specials and nothing has really come close. It seems like there aren't really that many "greats" left doing it now that Carlin is dead, with the popular comedians like Ansari or Nanjiani being enjoyable but not really anything spectacular. Are there any genuinely amazing comedians still in the business that are flying under the radar for the most part? Lee, C.K, and Stanhope are probably the three people closest to reaching some kind of Carlin-grade quality at the moment.

I'd recommend that people check it out and judge him based on that because nothing else he's done has been anywhere near as tight or polished.

Burnham is really underrated for a guy who has a bazillion Youtube videos. He's like the only young comic I've heard on WTF who Marc was not only not passive-aggressive to, but who also got life advice from Marc on not being sad and depressed and such. For Bo, I never liked him because he seemed extremely abrasive/IN YOUR FACE RAWRRRR. But I watched his first special a while ago and it Really changed my mind. I still think the same of him, but now think he's a good jokewriter.
