So I'm at the part where Reggie sells me the new 3ds, but he's not saying anything about the regular size, just XL. I am gonna be super pissed if only Japan gets fun customizable faceplates, please tell me this is not the case.

You may have missed the boat unless it ends up on other stores. It may be showing up straight on the nintendo store tomorrow around 9am EST and Best Buy's nintendo 3ds section was crashing for a few hours until it came back up (with no new items so it was just down for some reason).

Zelda has a fanatical following, which is why the Majora's Mask edition sold out so quickly, where the Monster Hunter 4 edition has not sold out yet. Even if new units become available, you will have to be on the ball with getting a unit right away. I was right there the moment they went on sale and I still missed the boat. Had to settle for a New 3DS XL Black.
