Pfft, rather than talking about idiots cave diving and dying when they get stuck or kick up a cloud of silt, let's talk about people being paid to get killed by their idiot bosses!! https://www.osha.gov/SLTC/commercialdiving/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rinD0k8jp4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEtbFm_CjE0 And of course regulars from the last thread will probably remember that you're not safe once the dive is over. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byford_Dolphin#Diving_bell_accident quote:Coward, Lucas and Bergersen were exposed to the effects of explosive decompression and died in the positions indicated by the diagram. Subsequent investigation by forensic pathologists determined Hellevik, being exposed to the highest pressure gradient, violently exploded due to the rapid and massive expansion of internal gases. All of his thoracic and abdominal organs, and even his spine, were ejected, as were all of his limbs. Simultaneously, his remains were expelled through the narrow trunk opening left by the jammed chamber door, less than 60 centimetres (24 in) in diameter. Fragments of his body were found scattered about the rig. One part was even found lying on the rig's derrick, 10 metres (30 ft) directly above the chambers. The deaths of all four divers were most likely instantaneous.

I assume there's just like a checklist that says "bathroom must have an outlet" and the lazy rear end construction guy sticks it in the easiest place without giving any thought to it whatsoever and says "welp, that's done" and goes for his nap. The apartments are in general the most shoddily constructed things I have ever seen. They start falling apart six months after they're finished.

I work for a company that made 55 million in profits last year. Today I was tasked with fixing the fluorescent lights in the office. Some of the fixtures keep having burnt out lights, it's been a problem for years, and I determined that about 10 fixtures needed new ballasts. So I went to the electric supply place and got 10 new ballasts for $180. The president of the company had a poo poo fit and wanted me to go unwire 10 old ballast units from the little used rear of the building and install them up front. Fortunatly we were able to disuade him of this. A. To save $180, he wanted me to unwire 15yr old lights in less used rooms and use the parts to fix the lights in the more used rooms, B. I am not an electrician, nor do I do building maintence, nor do I even work in that office. I was pulled off of a project so we could save money by not calling an electrician. C. $55 million in profit last year. This isn't quite the right thread for this, but there were no other work related threads in gbs right now. These are your betters. The captains of industry. The people running the show. Also, the front fluorescent lights are security lights and don't have a switch, they never turn off and I can't cut the breaker without plunging the whole hallway into darkness. I was told to replace the ballasts with the fixtures hot. I can do that without killing myself but I was still pretty irritated. For those curious, a fluorescent light operates at several thousand volts. The ballast coverts household 120V into something a fluorescent light can use.

The way these work is to rectify the AC into DC and then convert that into high frequency AC, correct? You're a better man than I, I'd have been "nope not doing that. I value my regular cardiac rhythm more than I do this job".

I did a contracting stint at a fortune 50 with a strong safety team. Normally it was great because they took no poo poo and gave no fucks, their word was law. Sometimes it was absurd like getting pissed that a subcontracted fencing company wasn't using fall protection while loading a flatbed pickup with fence sections. One thing that I remember was a thermostat broke and released Mercury in behind drywall. They called in a remediation company and spent thousands on making sure all the Mercury was remediated. My favorite moment was this: An employee called in to the emergency line stating that there was a box truck parked in a loading zone with the rear door open. Inside of the cargo area was an lpg cylinder that was venting, and the driver was nowhere to be found. The fire emergency team was called in, safety and facilities both respond and isolate the area. Then the idiot driver just bebops back in wondering what the commotion was for. Turns out the valve was bad on the cylinder and he figured he would just open it to vent off the contents while he was making a delivery in the building. The facilities manager, a little fiery Italian dude, cursed that guy out so hard he woulda made a drill instructor blush.

Vanagoon posted:The way these work is to rectify the AC into DC and then convert that into high frequency AC, correct? My understanding is that older ballasts actually just operate at line frequency AC, and only limit the current, as well as providing a high voltage with some inductive circuit to form the arc inside the bulb initially. Newer ones have active circuits and switching converters, so yeah it's AC->DC-> kilohertz AC. Slanderer fucked around with this message at 06:50 on Jan 16, 2015 |
