The worst part about it was that this was a relatively new manager, and someone that has NEVER traveled before in their life. I think he said it was only his second time on a plane. And he was managing a couple people that were used to 50% travel, and they've been around forever, so they know what the rules are. For them to stomach free Holiday Inn Express breakfast, and then whatever lunch take-out place the site bought for us that day, to be "recommended" to go to Subway for dinner was extra lovely. Since then that manager has calmed down a little I hear.

I've been able to book first class on Delta a couple of times now because for whatever reason, a last minute ticket only had a $100 or so fare difference, and by the time you account for a checked bag each way, the financial impact was minimal. Especially since I usually fly SW for WAY less than I am budgeted per trip.

Yeah, the GSA stuff was super hosed but the effect depends on where you work - while my own organization's travel policies and thresholds of approval didn't change at all, we just got audited more often (100% of the time instead of the previous ~25%). All reimbursement people can loving hang.

Any advice on maximizing workouts on the road? I'm sure I'm about to eat like an idiot for a few months and most of the hotel gyms I stay in lack things like free weights or sanitation.

The big gym chains like 24 hour Fitness la fitness etc. can sometimes be expensed or covered under a wellness benefit.

There are many apps and services that do guided body weight exercises that are hard if you make yourself do it right and with full effort. You can also improvise weights like lift your end table or overhead press chairs (I have done this)

Jump ropes are easy to pack and extremely intensive for cardio. Also moving around during the day , taking the stairs etc will add up.

If I'm in an environment where it's conducive I will go running. And I try to stay at hotels that at least have some kind of weights if possible. If not, the stuff Xguard86 recommended works. Maybe put P90x or a similar program on your computer/ipad if that's your thing?

Right now I'm using a Gold's Gym that's near my hotel, they worked out a deal with the hotel, can use the gym for a $5 fee per day. No brainer. If there is a chain in the areas you tend to travel to, it may be worth joining.

As far as chow, I try to eat healthy two meals a day. Depending on what you are doing for work and how long you are at a location you may be able to do grocery shopping and prepare your own lunches.

When I'm feeling ambitious I do P90 or P90X videos, since all I have to do is bring some bands and I'm not at the mercy of what the hotel fitness room has available. I'm feeling ambitious less often than I should.

Yeah the real trick is motivation. I try to pack my gym clothes with me in the morning and not go back to the hotel because it's hard once you're back not to hit the wine and couch.

There's a drop-in app with day passes for gyms which I forget off hand but I think it's useful. A guy I know developed it, so it definitely could be poo poo. I'll try to find the name.

I tend to run when I'm away from home. You can run anywhere, and there's a treadmill everywhere, and I could use the god damned cardio. I also try to take the stairs and park far away and do all that jazz, I find it helps.

Didn't ask for it - I confirmed I had Gold before the end of the year, and logged in randomly last night to book some award travel and saw Platinum instead. I guess I tripped over some hidden annual spend threshold?

Definitely doesn't hurt to ask especially if your spend was quite high.

Does the Army in 2001 count? No, I didn't think so.

Still, Seoul is a great city. The people are very polite and welcoming to Westerners, and there's literally everything to do within an hour. Want to ski in the morning and hit the beach in the evening? You can do it in South Korea. Like clubs? Museums? Seafood? Amusement parks? They have those, too. I'd love to travel there on vacation if I could get a wife and 3 kids to be in a plane all day and go past Hawaii.

Thanks folks. I don't have PM access but I'll share my questions here. The South Korea thread is more ex-pat centric than tourists so it's a diff. perspective.

1. How credit card friendly is Seoul? Is it like Tokyo in that you're better off with a fistful of cash?
Since I have to use my company's AmEx, I'm wondering if they take AmEx over there?

2. How do you handle situations where you need to spend cash (like food vendors?), do you just use your personal debit to grab cash and hope your company reimburses you back?

3. Do you recommend taking taxis from airport to hotel? I'm staying near Gangnum (ehhhhh, sexy lady!) at the Park Hyatt (w00t!!).
Is it gonna be horribly expensive like Tokyo? Or under $100?

4. How did you handle the wifi situation? I'm thinking of renting a MiFi edge to help me navigate the city (and not be dependent on potentially sketchy hotel wifi) -- not sure where I can grab one.

Thanks in advance!

1. You're fine here, I feel like more Korean vendors take AMEX than American, weirdly enough.

2. This depends mostly on your company's policy I think. I usually did cash advances at the hotel front desk and expensed the service charges but not the actual money. I would then expense each cash transaction I made.

3. Incheon to Gangnam is about a 80000-90000 won taxi ride. Airport limo bus to Gangnam is like 15000 IIRC, at least to the Express Bus Terminal (고속터미널). I don't know where the Park Hyatt is but it should be similar. The bus and taxi stops are located right outside of the airport doors. Be wary of hustlers soliciting cab fares inside the airport walls, they will rip you off. This goes for cab drivers in general, make sure they are running the meter and not making you pay a predetermined fare.

4. Hotel Internet is fine. Korea has a firewall for porn but nothing else really weird. You can probably rent a MiFi device at the airport. I just bought a prepaid SIM at http://egsimcard.co.kr.

I traveled to Korea a lot last year, let me know if you have more questions. How long is your stay?

I stopped over in Seoul for a couple days (for fun) on my way to Hong Kong last year.

I primarily used a credit card everywhere and had no trouble doing so. And I agree, Airport Limo Bus is the way to go.

Had a fake "emotional support dog" next to me yesterday for a four hour flight. I can't really fault the owner, who was totally open about the fact it was just his pet dog and he got a kit online that had a vest like thing with "E.S.A." on it and a fake ID thing. The dog was reasonably well behaved so it ended up not being a big deal. Nothing like that pig that poo poo all over everything on that US Airways flight a month or two back. But I really hope that either congress or the FAA does something soon to limit people from bringing untrained pets onto planes. They seem to become more prevalent every year. I know that emotional support animals are a real thing but the vast majority of people claiming that really just are avoiding fees and wanting to keep their pets with them. And it is a crapshoot whether they are going to be disruptive or not.
