Vampires in fantasy tend to be better than modern day Anne Rice style vampires. There's a place for self absorbed pretty-boy vampires, but there's also a place for super evil trying to rule the world or serving a lich on a quest for godhood vampires, and those are the type I tend to associate with warhammer vampire counts.

Similar shorter subjective anecdote that I was going to post when the question if why GW was successful in the first place was brought up before the whole SeriousGaylord poo poo kicked off.

I'm from the Channel Islands (British not Californian ones) and despite a The lack of a GW shop on the Islands there were small outlets that sold GW and D&D and MtG stuff run by little old women in tiny stores crammed with stock.

I got into GW through these, I didn't say played because I never really played GW properly...I think 1 game of 2nd edition 40k, some attempts at Fantasy, a few games of Necromunda and Blood Bowl (a friend has recently started a Blood Bowl league which I'm trying to organise my few working days around because I want to play it so much).

But despite the lack of games I still purchased the rule books, and the models and the paint and the...

Whatever, from my point of view the reason GW attracted me was the IP. Tolkien, despite his stance as a progenitor of fantasy nonsense is loving boring. I now read legal stuff for a living and give me the most banal EU case over Middle Earth stuff anytime.

GW was different, it was anarchic, it grabbed every source it could and crammed them into some insane hotspot full of humour and camaraderie.

Yeah MtG and D&D were interesting, easier to get new people hooked on but they lacked the same background, mad history of everything dialled up to 11.

Obviously I grew up and so did GW.

I know pages back the thread got shitted up with 'why play GW skirmish games they aren't well designed' 'fun is not an objective value'...It's because I have still yet to find a crazy, bullshit, haphazard world that scratches the same itch.

I won't buy GW now, I'm priced out besides the Blood bowl team (lie I got a third party team).

I guess as a personal view it doesn't add much to the thread but gently caress I this seems the best place for it.

Anyone interested in a project trying to find out what all the previous White Dwarf editors (and perhaps staff) are currently doing with their lives?

Yeah, that's my problem with other games out there. Like, Infinity seems fun by the rules (no need to check table for wounds!), but the lore isn't much. Same with Helldorado. And Warmachine. And Relaunched Warzone. And Mantic's not!Hams.

Guys it was just a red title involving GW's cum and it's not that crazy or unusual for people to buy back their avatars, It's only like $5 or something.

Thanks for your comments though!

As for the vampire thing, I have a rant about vampires but I don't think you really want to hear it and this isn't really the right thread for it anyway. It has to do with puritanical/Catholic fear/shame dichotomies regarding sex and virginity, and the resurgence in the popular culture of the vampirism meme coinciding with the AIDS epidemic and a new cultural fear of bloodsharing.

Sufficie to say that I don't really care which subcategory of vampires we're talking about : vampires as a meme have been dissected and rehashed and viewed from every possible angle and mirror, and I'm just very very done with them. I feel like it's the place I'll be regarding zombies in another year or two as well. It's probably exactly where everyone was in 1978 America when thinking about westerns. Sometimes the popular culture seizes on a genre and just goes apeshit with it for 20 years or so, and we're (hopefully) at the end of such a cycle w/r/t goddamn vampires.

Its interesting that the Southampton store had such a positive effect on you since that was my local store for a decade. Still sets the mark for what a GW store should be.

Your other points are incredibly accurate though, and shows how the actions of the younger adults with disposable income to spare has changed drastically from the 90's. The mass of information available on prices/competitors has really shown GW to be the very expensive side of things, and with the ability for people to pick up huge volumes of product at 2nd hand prices without having to scour local flea markets/classified ads has removed the majority of the effort from doing it.

You're not an idiot, you know you can spend $400 on full price models, or $400 on second hand and get 10 times as much for your money. Its a no brainer.

I cannot work out how GW will be able to compete with the secondary market for people just getting started without relying on people who just flat refuse to buy used. If they drop their prices, the used market follows with them. You can sort of see them try to add value to the kits by chucking in a billion bits that will just go in the bin when the models are built so you don't get them when buying used, but there's only so much value that will give if the models are built how you want them to be anyway.

Can I ask what it would take for you to want to walk into a GW store and buy something brand new? Be brutally honest.

Just to also let you know, the guy who's Nurgle tank you saw came back from a 15 year absence of miniature painting and won another slayer sword in 2013. He's ludicrously good.

serious gaylord: undercover marketing department rep.

I'd say there's a difference between people new to the hobby and people new to GW. If you're new to modeling in general, you probably won't go hunting for poo poo on ebay or aliexpress. So in that case, cheap minimum points starter boxes would likely help. As for people that are only new to hams (but not mini)... cheaper starter boxes and years of sustained effort to become a company that isn't as hated as it is liked?

HiveCommander

To buy brand-new from a GW store, I'd like reasonable pricing on par with other game systems, table-space like most good FLGS stores have, to show they are supportive of the hobby after the purchase has been made, for the rules to be more consistent with balance (as well as for ranged and melee to both be viable to accomodate more playstyles), and to know that the cool models that I'm buying aren't going to be shafted in the rules when something new is released that does a similar job (see: Carnifexen when Trygons came out in plastic).

1) A well designed, balanced rules set, preferably one that is flexible enough to support skirmish scale.
2) Less risk of complete obsolency of my purchased units/armies
3) And yeah, prices to sane ranges.

It also doesn't help that GW's current starter boxes have really undermined the rest of their products in strange ways. When BFSP came out it was ~45 dollars and contained a hundred dollars worth of goblins that looked BETTER than the more expensive plastic box sets. I bought probably four or five of them in the first six months of them being released to pad out my O&G force and also ended up with a pretty sizable (if not sort of ugly) Dwarf army as well. IoB has this issue as well since, IIRC, you basically save over half the cost of the box based on the price of Sword Masters alone.

TBH I think they should consider doing starter boxes like that for each faction at around ~50-65 dollars that are made up of similar one piece models. Then you could sell people on the bigger kits for more customization OR you could also sell accessory packs that use the same pegs as the one piece models so lazy people could swap out the shields and such. This is basically how DUST does it these days and it's a nice system since gamer types can buy the easy build stuff and have a force on the table fast and more modelling inclined players can get the full kits with a bajillion pieces (seriously, did every ladder rung need to be separate Paolo?) and special head swaps and such.

Multipart plastic kits are cool and all, but in Fantasy I would prefer not having to spend hours assembling and prepping a hundred points of Skaven troops that move around in a large mob and need to be able to rank up easily.

When you see it, you'll shit yourself.

My GW story is unusual in that originally I had a fantasy army (that I barely played with), then I moved to Nottingham and got big into pretty much every single Specialist game out there: Epic: Armageddon, BFG, Necromunda, Gorka Morka (although it was difficult to find models for this, although the new orcs and trukks that had just come out then were nice), Blood Bowl etc. If it was a specialist game, I probably played it at some point, I think I only missed out on Mordheim because it honestly didn't interest me. I even tried Inquisitor when it first came out (I remember reading all the stuff on White Dwarf when the game originally came out and I really enjoyed the running campaign that they had where they showcased Inquisitor Battle Reports).

So when GW dropped most if not all of the Specialist Games from their range, I stopped being a customer. I then became a board gamer/RPGer and haven't looked back since.

I bought my last FB army (wood elves) from a goon, but I started another army (chaos warriors) last year and bought all those models (500 pts worth or so) in a GW store. Admittedly abroad where the prices are lower, but still.

I'm not sure I'll ever finish it though since the wood elves army book since then and I discovered Infinity. I do a lot more of building and painting and the chaos army was almost more of a themey display thing with slaanesh knights converted from cold one knights and dragon princes so even cost more than an out-of-the-box GW unit.

I also own Skaven (my first army) and I'm definitely getting a verminlord and maybe two boxes of stormfiends. I'm part of the problem aren't I? :(

TBH, having only ever played GW games its pretty amazing to me how corvus belli handles their PR and support of the game. I guess I was just a dumb GW fan boy who never knew better. I most definitely won't jump on the 9th ed band wagon if the rumours are true. Mostly because of time constraints. I'd much rather play skirmish games than having to build and paint several units every year just to keep up.

ijyt

To be fair the Stormfiends are very reasonably priced for GW, considering you get three sizeable models and about 7 weapon loadouts for £38.

I started when the roleplaying magazine I was reading regularly started covering Warhammer Fantasy (1st Ed) - that was White Dwarf.

Played that a bit, and 2nd /3rd ed fantasy with High Elves, then got into 40kRT when that came along, buying pretty much one of everything that they released, although my main army was (and still is ) Eldar- I can still field guardians made of lead with 'Space Elf' on the base-tab :)

I dropped out when I went to Uni, just as 3rd edition 40k arrived- bought the book and a couple of codexs, but never played it, and I got back into it at the tail end of 5th, getting the Black Reach box just before 6th was announced, and padded out the marines to a 1000pt force (box of scouts, devastators and assault marines, a chaplain to lead them and a whirlwind) for small games or as allies.

Played a Lot of 6th, and got everything new for Eldar and a lot of the newer sculpts of models I already had (Harlequins, Avengers- even finecast Dragons and Farseer, Forgeworld Avatar and even a Revenant Titan).

By the time 7th was announced, my group (I'm in the UK, so don't play in a shop, GW or otherwise) had already moved onto Warmachine as a more balanced and enjoyable system and where just starting to try Malifeaux- the card mechanic is different and the models are amazing- better than GWs' in my opinion.

I posted earlier that I payed full price for the 7th rulebook etc as at the time, a couple of quid difference didn't matter to me.

What would get me buying stuff in a GW store ?
Nothing. I've Never had a good experience in one, from being hard-sold to from the moment I walk in, to creepy staff hassling my (female) partner and no-fun to play 'net lists on the few times I've actually played in store.
I'd order from the webstore again, if 40k wasn't an unplayable mess that takes half a day to play a single game, if there was something I wanted (Eldar haven't had a single model since June '13) and if the prices were comparable to other online stores.
Having a webpage, and not just an online store would help; I know they're trying to sell me as much as possible, but they could at least Pretend to be about more than that !
