Radiation's not bad. I like Marillion.com a lot, at least as much as Marbles, and Anoraknophobia is good too. Not real proggy, per se, but good if not great songwriting and H has an interesting voice.

Eh, I'm more of the opinion that Radiation and marillion.com are very inconsistent albums with some great highs (Now She'll Never Know, A Few Words for the Dead, Interior Lulu) and cringe-inducing lows (Under the Sun, Answering Machine, Deserve, loving Built-in Bastard Radar). Anoraknophobia by comparison is a very safe album that I enjoyed my first couple listens, but now there's nothing there I feel passionate about one way or the other. Glad you didn't try to make a case for Fugazi or Sounds, because I wouldn't even know how to respond to that. I'm still (unreasonably?) angry about Sounds That Can't Be Made.

I had to look up that Marillion album called Fugazi because I got confused and thought we were talking about Ian MacKaye. That album art is weird and offputting, it's got that same shiny painting look that I associate with death metal records of the same era that unsettled me as a young person.

I think when I was 20 or something and wanted to get into Marillion I picked up Misplaced Childhood based on something? and a used copy of Radiation (which was still fairly recent at the time, I think .com hadn't come out yet or had just come out) and decided I liked one band pretty well and another not at all. Deserve's not a bad song. Dull maybe. Same for Built in Bastard Radar if you can get past the dumb lyric. I like .com

Yeah, their first album is pretty good. I also like "Harold Land" and "I See You," which seems to have more improvisation than we're usually used to hearing on a Yes track.

I'm partial to Beyond and Before from the first album. Time and a Word is pretty darn good, too. Astral Traveller and the song Time and a Word are among the best things they've ever done, though Banks was said to have hated the use of the orchestra on the latter.

It's a shame yes had to kick him out. In hindsight they made the right choice in getting Steve Howe. But I often wonder if Yes could have worked with 2 guitarists.

So when I was deleting my downloads the other day, I discovered a random folder entitled "Bird Eyes View". I wondered what the hell it was, listened to it... ...and holy loving poo poo it's good. Has anyone else heard of these guys yet? (Also, would this constitute as progressive rock? Or would this go elsewhere? It reminded me a lot of Harmonium, who are constituted as such)

I hadn't seen the video Yes made for Then https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-wiQqx278M Steve Howe is the only taking this seriously and even he's miming Peter Banks' guitar parts. Chris Squire changed instruments with Tony Kaye and Bill Bruford spends half the video giggling at Squire's attempts (and the director zooms in on his hands at one point and he's not even pressing the keys).

Listening to Live at the Orpheum and while the instrumentation is on point for the most part (I'm only one track in, admittedly), I cannot say I'm a fan of these vocals. Not that Belew would have been great for them, either, but I feel like the guy should have a deeper voice for 70s stuff.

The mix on the album is a lot better than the live shows, imho. The vocals were sometimes buried a bit live, and the drum mix is a LOT more even. At the Madison show I was front row between Bill and Gavin and so I got a tour de force of their drumming, while in Albany I was in front of Pat. Gavin really did a good job bringing Bill up in the mix to the point his parts were much more audible. As to lyrics, Jakko did a great job, I felt. The songs chosen would not have sounded 'right', I think, with Ade singing. I note again not one Belew lyric was sung, even on the modern era songs (TCoL). I note as well I would not want Jakko singing most of Ade's lyrics for the same reason. The crowning jewel to me was still Mel. Jesus gently caress he killed. It is possible more audio will be produced after next year's UK tour. But it's up to Robert, so who knows. The fact he came out and chatted and shook hands at the first Albany show was faintly astonishing to the fans (and the band).

I noticed amazon quietly pushed back my Live At The Orpheum vinyl copy to early March. A little disappointed but understand that something like that takes time. I heard some cuts from that Jakko interview. I tried to abstain until I got my record, but "One More Red Nightmare" and "Sailor's Tale" were...pretty unfuckingbelievable. I was expecting shittier sound quality, but with the digital compression from the stream on my home studio monitors, sounded quite alright to me. I'm also hoping that the mastering process for vinyl will give a little bit of "sonic fairy dust" to the album (e.g. a lil' bit more compression for the vinyl pressing than the digital release)

IMO Jakko did a great job with The Letters but I think that's partly because just about anyone sounds better than Boz Burrell. He sounded pretty lame on the other 70's tracks, like he was trying too hard. I've always felt that John Wetton was a pretty bad and sort of lazy sounding singer, but his voice really worked with the lyrics and overall aesthetic of KC at that time, Jakko has the wrong kind of energy, or just too much energy.

Got my copy of the new VDGG live album, Merlin Atmos, a few days ago. It's really good. I was kind of skeptical that they'd sound good, since they're getting up there in years, but they... just kinda do. It's definitely a different sound from the album versions - they don't go nearly as hard on the instrumentals, and they're a little slower - but the changes are not always to their detriment, and Peter Hammill still has his voice. Man, does he ever still have his voice. Not going crazy in some spots makes it a lot more emotional, to me at least. I really like it. Would love a US tour again, since I missed the last one (which was the only one in ages), but I'll settle for this.

I've been re-listening to every album of theirs that I have, I rewatched the Arriving Somewhere DVD, I got the Anesthetize Blu-Ray and watched that for the first time, etc. And I want to like Steven's solo stuff, but I've just never been that impressed by it like I am with PT's stuff. It's okay, I guess, but like after listening to Hand Cannot Erase once, I don't feel like I'll ever feel the need to listen to the whole thing ever again. With a lot of PT songs, they get stuck in my head from time to time, I've probably listened to them at least at least a hundred times by this point and they don't get old for me. For example: I've been listening to Deadwing for probably like 9 years at this point, but most of the songs from that album still sound just as loving rad to me today as they did when I first heard them. I love PT more as well, but I really love Insurgentes (like it's one of my top albums ever) and Raven was one of the better albums of the last few years. Grace for Drowning and this new one have disappointed, hopefully the next one will be good for me again
