That's the censored Steam version so it doesn't even have nudity in it. I wonder how well the uncensored one has sold in comparison though.

The devs posted clear directions on how to remove the censorship on the steam forums. The steam version has all the content but just locks away the stuff Steam bans by default.

Basically they snuck the thing in under Valve's nose.

Again: They put a very admirable amount of work and love into their trashy shameless video game. That's about as backhanded of a compliment as I can offer it. It's the Senran Kagura conundrum all over again: It's so embarrassing that I am having a hard time finding it funny.

edit: here's how shameless huniepop is (from the blog):

quote:

In a stunning display of naivety, I sent a review build to a bleeding heart SJW who had no intention of giving an objective review. Probably twice.
I’ve stated before that there is no chance the mainstream games media is going to give HuniePop a fair shake. It’s going to be attacked relentlessly because it does not conform to the politically correct narrative and cultural standards set forth by these people. I’ve somewhat jokingly said in the past that the game is basically an SJW’s worst nightmare.
Well, I was right. Several press outlets reached out to me to do an early review of the game. I blame only myself and my lack of experience dealing with games press, but I blindly agreed without doing the most basic investigation into who these people are or what their agenda is.
So, one of these reviews has been published. And of course, in stark contrast to the positive review I posted yesterday, this author finds absolutely no redeeming qualities about the game. At first I was simply confused. But one glance at the author’s social media accounts cleared up the issue. Obviously I have sent a review build to a politically motivated individual.
Not only is every aspect of the game unfairly dragged through the mud, but the author insults the audience (the fans who would play this game) and accuses the game of being all manner of delightful things, including, of course, racist. Wonderful.
The worst part is, I probably did this not once, but twice. I am somewhat reluctantly willing to give this second author a benefit of the doubt. So, I guess we’ll see what happens.
Fortunately, review builds have/are also been sent out to trusted outlets with strong ethics policies such as GamesNosh, NicheGamer and Techraptor. So look out for those. Even if they were to give a mixed or unfavorable review, at least you can take comfort in the fact that they actually reviewed the game.

At least the art is decent, I still can't help but laugh when I remember Gender Bender DNA Twister Extreme got released on Steam early access and it's over twice as expensive to boot. Just the name alone is too funny.

To be more fair than I should, it was a loving bad review. Instead of just going lol anime porn, it went into hysterics and getting mad that porn as a concept exists. Which is part of the reason this game is selling extremely well now and will probably create a market for softcore porn on Steam. The creator while a big rear end loser was smart as hell, and basically foresaw and set this up. I know my and this threads reaction was pretty much what he was hoping for, and goon faux moral outrage was what he was praying for. Sex and controversy sell

I did not read the review the blog post is talking about so I wouldn't know, I was just taking it at face value. It's true that people getting offended was exactly what the developer was looking for because any PR = good and PR = more people buy my video game, and it's obvious that some of the stuff in it is edgy for the sake of people going "gassp how can they doooo thiiiisss", but boy what a really stupid thing to go morally bankrupt on. Everyone knows porn + game can be fun and hilarious and not take itself at all seriously and thus be enjoyable. Did no one play any of the Leisure Suit Larry games? The college one caused similar reactions but is still a hilarious and quite playable game. It's pretty much a bunch of classic arcade game ripoffs with dildo jokes, I don't see the downside here.

edit: to put it clearly: everyone is ok with or likes Sex Comedy as a movie genre, but as a video game genre it's stigmatized, it's weird. I guess the "comedy" part isn't coming across strongly enough. Then again, most AAA games have a really hard time not taking themselves seriously too, so maybe it's a deeper problem with gaming having no sense of humor. Thank gently caress for Saints Row.

I don't know.. I'm not seeing much game there other than an experience/tech demo. After a week or so with the Oculus Rift you'll burn through all the demos and experiences' and similiar hunks of crap and start searching for something with actual gameplay to it made by an actual game developer.

Don't get me wrong it looks nice, but you've got demos like Sightline: The Chair and Vanguard Valkyrie that do the exact same thing for free.

With No Limits 2 you get a really well made rollercoaster sim that blows the hell out of the Unreal Castlecoaster demo, with the added bonus of Steamworks integration to go along with the built-in editor. Simply put I've found it to be an incredibly solid vr package that I'd strongly recommend to anyone with a Rift. Hats off to the devs as well for the flawless vr integration, one of the best I've had, and I've deleted a good half-dozen or so "no really the rift is cool let me just loving fiddle with the setup for 10min so you can try it" demos I've accumulated.

I'm thinking of grabbing Euro Truck as well later as that has some extremely positive reviews regarding VR integration.
Other than that I've played HL1 and 2, and their both a ton of fun in VR. Though HL1 suffers from a lot of hilarious scaling issues once you put the Rift on; though you can hardly fault a game over a decade old for it's newly added VR technology.
Oh.. And gently caress everything about Ravenholm in VR.

If anyone has any recommendations or is curious about how a game plays with an Oculus Rift I'd be happy to give a review if it looks interesting enough to pick up.

People have mentioned playing Alien: Isolation with the Oculus as apparently it still has the native support files. From the Alien: Isolation thread:

TheSonicRetard posted:

Modders have re-enable native oculus rift support in final version of Aliens Isolation.

appropriate: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uEEN9opRCQ

A few hours after VorpX teased a special build of their injection driver to add VR support to Aliens Isolation, modders on the Oculus Rift subreddit have found and reenabled the real, native Oculus Rift support from the demos Sega showed off at various conventions. Apparently it's as easy as modding a few ini files and launching the executable with some command line options:

quote:

1) in ENGINE_SETTINGS.XML (found in the DATA folder) change the stereo options to:

<Setting name="Stereo Mode">
<Quality name="Rift" precedence="4"/>
<Quality name="Off" precedence="4"/>
</Setting>

2) Set the Oculus to extended mode.

3) In the oculus configuration utility pause the service.

4) Start the game.

5) To play the game normally, reactivate the service by opening the display mode and set it to "direct to rift" and viola.

Tested it and it works... HOWEVER. Positional tracking is not yet working, Scratch that... the light does not come on but POSITIONAL TRACKING WORKS... you can lean around corners!! oh my god it is terrifying!

Credit to /u/popcorncrackle, /u/hagg87, and /u/Wookiee81

Pretty amazing to have this back in the game within a day of it releasing.

TheSonicRetard posted:

The second half of the game (thus far for us) is, however, thrilling. Being hunted by the alien is an exhilarating experience. This portion of the game feels unlike any game I've played, especially with VR. The game itself is built with a huge focus on controlling your display, rather than combat. If you look at the controls for the game, a surprising attention is given to the ways you can lean and peak, giving you much finer control over your vision than you'd normally expect. Obviously, this translates wonderfully to VR, where you have the ultimate control of your view.

The alien is pretty much unstoppable and giving yourself away is pretty much instant death. You can give yourself away in realistically any way you can imagine. Within the context of VR, that takes on added dimensions. When you are hiding in a locker, for example, you can move your head to look around the slits at angles. But, just like in real life, if you move your head too much, you can actually bang it on the door, which creates a noise for the alien to hear. The nature of the alien naturally inspecting locker doors leads to some incredibly tense situations. Hiding in a locker, as the alien sniffs the vents, you find youself frozen in terror, concentrating on not moving an inch in real life because you don't want to tap the locker and give yourself away.

Given the terrific graphics, which approach a degree of photorealism compared to the sets and alien of the films themselves, these situations, when they all come together, form a very powerful experience. I haven't ever felt so enthralled or invested in the safety of my character. The lack of save points in individual levels provides a tangible punishment for losing beyond the way your heart begins to race and palms sweat - losing means also losing 20 or so minutes of your time.

TheSonicRetard posted:

So one of the coolest things that happened to me while playing this game, and I actually commented on it as it was happening, is that, once when the alien was sniffing a locker I was hiding in, the hair on my arms and legs stood on end.

I've seen tons of horror movies and played survival horror games, no film or game has ever done this to me before. I'm sure it was the VR, but it was an incredible moment - the game actually triggered some subconscious responses from my body. Incredible moment, I love how this game can give me such an adrenaline rush like no other.
