Yeah, I've played through six Dragon Quest games and I honestly can't recall any huge standout tracks except for the chill flight one that they use in most of them. I pay quite a bit of attention to music in the games I play too. Of course if you're a person who grew up with the series, and a lot of Japanese people did, it can probably be a real nostalgia bomb. I will say this, the Dragon Warrior IV town theme is probably the catchiest loving song I've ever heard, and has long been drilled into my brain: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERcWu78xlws YggiDee fucked around with this message at 23:39 on Jan 20, 2015 |

I think DQ4 has some pretty good overworld music since they're different each chapter.

Dragon Quest has a bunch of good music, it's just not quite as memorable as Final Fantasy music. While I do think FF music is better overall, I think this has more to do with Dragon Quest stories being simpler than FF stories - it's easier to get attached to pieces of music when you can relate to them a story scene in your head or some locale or anything. Should work fine for the Theatrhythm games though, you don't need to be familiar with stuff to appreciate it while it's being played.

In Theatrhythm, should I stick with one party or mix up the characters now and then? I know it probably doesn't matter but figured I'd ask anyway.

They'll probably gently caress up the DQ music game by choosing to only do the midi versions of the songs and not having voice acting. Jesus christ the Japanese version of DQ8 is a shitshow.

Hey, nothing wrong with min-maxing rhythm games. Killing bosses in one combo in Shadow Hearts games is super satisfying

triplexpac posted:In Theatrhythm, should I stick with one party or mix up the characters now and then? Personally I like switching them around since you'll hit level 99 on characters fairly quickly and unless you want to reset them back to 1 for an increased CP cap , you might as well bring someone fresh in to level them up too because why not. If you know FF you probably have a pretty good idea about the strengths of different characters. Some characters and skills are more useful than others but largely better ones just change how many items you get from walking fast or killing a lot of enemies. Of course if you have a lot of trouble hitting notes you should bring at least one healer or if you can't quite beat a boss in a Quest Medley you should get someone with more damage (or the Scare ability which skips one enemy and allows you to reach the boss faster). And the other way around, if you're breezing through the notes you might as well drop your healer(s) or anyone focused on defensive stats and bring more damage/speed/luck for more items because again, why not. Ultimately it's handy to have a large variety of party members leveled up but it's not going to make or break your game. I mostly do it for variety's sake. E: If you really want to smash through enemies in battle which is actually quite beneficial if you're playing multiplayer, bring a lot of guys with Focus and Added Cut like Warrior of Light and Cloud. The non-stop chopping is pretty funny. Kanfy fucked around with this message at 00:03 on Jan 21, 2015 |

The skill that finally got me over the edge in Curtain Call was Elegy 3, which you can get as a reward for quests and some enemy kills. Cecil also has a stronger version of it. What it does is substantially reduce the amount of damage you take. You still can't skate by in Ultimate but you can play longer before you bite the dust. It let me practice Ultimate without constant fails so that I was finally able to get the hang of it. I don't know that I'll ever be able to chain crit whole songs but I have gotten a few perfects. Give it a try if you're struggling with Ultimate and high level quests. I finished a 99 that was going around with a bunch of black shards, unlocking Sephiroth who is of course ridiculously overpowered.

A lot of the Dragon Quest music instantly became more memorable to me when Hyadain did vocal tracks for them. Torneko's overworld theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2w-mjWVh0w DQ IV's Hero overworld theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RT_YprfwJkk Ragnar's overworld theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKw8ojd2a10 DQ III dungeon theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6CF7iHh1KE Also a lot of DQ 8's soundtrack stands out to me, especially the flight theme (which I know is an orchestrated version of the DQ III music) and the overworld music.

Idk if there is a limit on that but they're all on their sixth cycle I think 10 cycles is the max? Either way you get less and less CP each time, eventually you should just feed them cards as leveling them again is no longer worth it. Also you can always give people EXP Hound, if you have a team of all level 99s except for one member. Makes them jump like 10 levels a song.

Yeah I have a bunch of cards I should probably just burn at some point but they're levelling just from playtime really. Whenever a new dlc comes along I just get back into the game for like a week. Speaking of looks like I need to buy some more songs on the 22nd

Dragon Quest shines with it's sad melancholic music. I prefer these to all sad FF music except for To Zanarkand. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YR1kvUHtI_U Days of Sadness - DQ7 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIXq2SnwqiU Elegy - DQ4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UHjVnNLnYc&t=75s - Small Shrine (1:15 on video) - DQ3 It also has better epic world music (As it should) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjfdQYo-G_I Heavenly Flight - DQ8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22E-D7wG_GI Endless World - DQ2 DQ typically has really really poor battle music though.

Most DQ tracks linked are arranged or symphonic versions though, those are pretty much always going to sound great. But it's not like Curtain Call uses orchestrated or The Black Mages' versions of FF music either, although that would be incredibly rad and I would probably pay for that DLC. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zev79FxRjO4 E: I forgot how good a lot of these were, I would definitely pay for that DLC. I would love to see some more Xenogears stuff as well as some Chrono Cross since those are probably Squaresoft's next best OST's to the FF games. I wouldn't complain if we got an Einhander tune either...THE AWESOME GHOST posted:I think 10 cycles is the max? Either way you get less and less CP each time, eventually you should just feed them cards as leveling them again is no longer worth it. I want to say the CP limit is 99. That's where I needlessly got Rydia to before stopping resetting her level. Also, if you're just leveling a new character, putting EXP bonus on them stacks with XP hound basically making them able to hit 99 in the space of a short quest. All that said, I think 70CP is a good sweet spot for most characters to use all their best abilities, which they hit on maybe their 3rd or 4th reset.

Curtain Call is definitely lasting entertainment, I still tend to do the 5 daily songs on whichever difficulty I haven't done them yet. If it's on Expert I try to All Critical it, with Ultimates I tend to settle with Perfect Chains because I'm not actually crazy. To this day the hardest things to All Critical are those Event tracks, I've managed like two of them on Basic because they require literally perfect accuracy to count as Criticals, probably to compensate for the low amount of total notes in them.
