Swarm Tactics is wonderful if you've got Howlrunner and Mauler in the same swarm both with it, and you bring along a couple Academy Ties instead of using the points for higher PS mooks. You can get a quartet of ships firing at PS 7-8 instead of a 8, 7, and a pair of 4s. It really changes things up around the midlevel pilot skills.

So this weekend, there's a mini-tournament, King of the Hill 80pt scenario. For this event, there will be 3 or 4 players per table, a 12" circle zone in the middle, and at the end of every round for 7 rounds players will score 1 point for each ship that ends the round inside the zone. Most points scored wins, even if a player is completely wiped. My immediate thought for the event was that swarms would be severely advantaged in this format, as they would have more ships with more chances to score points, but my next-level thought was that everyone would think that and I wanted to shoot Assault Missiles into the cloud of enemies. Here's my list, any thoughts/comments would be appreciated: Prototype Pilot + Assault Missiles (22) Prototype Pilot + Assault Missiles (22) Bandit Squadron Pilot (12) Blue Squadron Pilot + B-Wing/E2 + Nien Nunb (24) susan fucked around with this message at 19:23 on Jan 19, 2015 |

Or just have Soontir shoot my A-Wings off the table before they unload ordinance.

Can anyone give me some tips for dealing with Falcon + Outrider if you don't have big ships? The tournament I have entered is at the end of the month, and I now know for a fact that greater than 50% of the players will be running at least a Falcon, with most also running an Outrider as well. I am planning on bringing a Tie Swarm as it is all I really have. Is staying at Max Range and plinking the best option, or am I better to close to range one and just try and throw as many dice at them as possible? Any tricks I should watch out for? I have never played against either of these ships, all I know is that they are Really popular up here. I have played against a Decimator and did well by setting up a clustered asteroid field during deployment and spending as much time as possible flying through it, which forced him into some really awkward maneuvers.

In general, focused firing swarms is one of the best counters to turrets. Where turrets shine most are against elite arc dodgers, since they deny most of the advantages of that strategy. Overwhelming them with targets and weight of numbers is the most reliable way to break them.

Yeah, a swarm can be a solid counter against YTs. Against a 2 YT list, killing 1 quickly is always preferable to injuring both. -1300s are usually built for durability, with Chewie, Falcon/C3PO, or R2D2 or all of the above. I've seen Fat Hans and Fat Chewies limp around the map on 2 hull and a shield for turns. Most -2400 builds I've seen are less durable, with a focus on flying on the flanks or the edges of the map, taking potshots in. In an ideal world, you'd be able to close to R1 with one of the two YTs quickly, finish it off while losing not too many TIEs and then turn to face the remaining one.

The only PS 9 pilot you're likely to see in either matchup is Han. Howl and possibly a second TF ace both with ST make an excellent pick for swarms, since you'll get 2-4 shots before most of the turrets can reply.

At least if you gave it the heavy laser cannon, but why wouldn't you do that for a 2400's turret?

My guess is that an Ion Cannon Outrider could be used in place of the YY in a YYBB control list. More durability (sorta), firing from R-3, ability to barrel roll around the arc of ioned ships. Plus just plain cheaper for a Fringer (30+8) than 2 Golds (36+10). Draw backs - Only one ion instead of the Y-s giving you two. Relying on green dice instead of hull.

Your combat and maneuvering options are just crazy. Too bad it's just so many points at 39 for a PS5 ship. Good thing his pilot ability is so incredible.

I enjoy playing these three pilots together, but I would consider dropping the shield upgrade and recon specialist for a gunner on Whisper. You already get a defensive focus when you perform an attack that hits, so the additional one will only be used if you're being shot more than once. This should only really happen if you're playing against two turreted ships or they do a great job boxing you in. To be fair, I might be suggesting doubling down too hard on Whisper, but I like the synergy between gunner and fire control system to make the most out of the offensive capabilities.

Gunner on Whisper is a waste of points, especially if you've got an ACD and FCS on it already. The number of times you won't get a hit with four red dice and a TL against... drat near anything are small enough that it's the most situational five points you're ever going to find. With Recon Specialist on top, you're getting a defensive focus regardless, and you can spend one on offense to all but ensure four or five hits every turn. Most ships are literally incapable of dodging all that, and the ones that are capable of it aren't going to unless their dice are hot poo poo. That said, I don't really like Recon Spec on Whisper, and I would use those three points for something else. Probably a TL on Fel and an initiative bid. As a phantom player, you really, really, really want that initiative so you can get your ACD against PS9 pilots like Han or Wedge, both of whom are fully capable of utterly loving up an uncloaked phantom (and sometimes a cloaked phantom, and you want that defensive focus).

Jake/Tycho together can be really effective (and ideally you want them as high PS as possible), but if you make one mistake or you don't roll well on the prockets you are pretty much screwed. It's a very high risk, high reward tactic.

List was super fun to fly though, will definitely fly it again.
