I've been sitting here for 5 mins trying to think of a joke to make but I just realised the animators of Mass Effect already did it for me

So what exactly is BR? Is it the equivalent of level? Do we not want to get too much too soon because the game gets too easy or because it potentially screws us?

edit: Ah, there was an post on page 3 that helped me understand what it basically means. Still not sure how it can screw us by being too high or too low, though.

This is a silly question but what is the quote; "I have to learn forbidden magic I took an oath to wipe out, stop an invasion of Orcs, rescue the Council of Seven, and on top of all that, I'm stuck with you." from? I tried researching it myself but I came up dry on google. It sounds like a pretty epic quote from some classic fantasy ballad, but is it?

Basically, BR can screw you in a couple of ways. You raise your stats in battle and the lower your BR is relative to the enemy the more likely you'll get a stat increase. If you grind against a couple of BR 5 mooks until your BR is up in the 70's your dudes will be substantially weaker than they would have been had you fought stronger dudes. Increasing your BR also increases the enemy's stats and lets them use more/better techs and attacks.

This is not nearly as pronounced on the PC version as it was on the Xbox version where you could gently caress yourself hard, but it is something to keep in mind. Also worth noting, all PCs have their own hidden BR rank that only increases if you use them in battle which can unlock skills and upgrades.

Basically high Party BR means fewer stat increases and tougher enemies. It also screws over people you recruit later as they have fewer opportunities to grow. Remember, everyone has fixed starting stats and recruiting, say, Baulson when you were BR 20 instead of BR2 would make him not nearly as useful.

In the Xbox version some monsters were set to always appear at a certain BR which could mean they were a ridiculous difficulty jump if you were trying to keep your BR low too! In the PC version they scale to your BR.

Really the BR system in the Xbox version was horrifically weird and awful. The PC version is fine in comparison, normal play won't break it and as long as you don't grind outrageously you'll be fine but not as :airquote:'optimal':airquote: as someone who is doing a stupidly-low BR playthrough.

Don't play the Xbox version of this game.

Also Djin Jorgen because we aren't using him anyways.

I played this game right when it came out on the 360 and it was terrible. While i genuinely enjoyed the world building and the character designs, barely any part of the game mechanics are explained and I ended up hitting a brick wall that didn't allow me to continue.

I wasn't grinding, but I was killing monsters trying to find weapon upgrades for my party and such and ended up getting to BR 20 and having to go into some mines with Emma as part of the main story. No amatter what I did in there I was just getting 2 shot by all the monsters. I must have tried that section 20x, before giving up and never playing it again.

Glad to hear it's less lovely in the PC version as I just picked it up during the last steam sale to play along with this thread.

Anyway I vote for Aristocrat

It's sort-of the equivalent of level. Each unit has a starting BR that roughly determines how powerful they are (and how powerful you should be to be considered evenly matched with them).

I'm not going for a low BR run, I'm not going to be screwed over, I just was surprised at how much BR I gained from that one dungeon.

I wrote that quote. It was SUPPOSED to be in reference to Divinity: Original Sin, but I wrote that more than a year before the game came out, and since Larian Studios practically considers plots to their games afterthoughts, almost every part of that quote no longer applies to D:OS.

Hey Stabbey, I don't know if anyone else has spoken up about this yet but can you include running-around-town videos in this LP like you did with Athlum? I sure hope people like blooper videos, because Chapter 17 is gonna have a buttload of them. In fact, I'm calling the entire chapter "Talk about an epic failure!". I take on a sidequest for a few attempts before deciding there's no way I can do it without better stats and the capability of reviving people. People were wondering when I'd start getting into deeper strategy and battle management? About now is when.

Plus, over the next two chapters, I fight a bunch of rare monsters (some just for the thread, I'm not keeping all of those as part of the actual run). There will also be an excellent example of how the Ranger's "Side On" ability can be a major advantage hilariously abusable.

Chapter 16 is almost done, I just need to finish the writeup for the boss, and then edit and encode the videos. EDIT: I've managed to cut the 1:11 worth of dungeon videos down to 31 minutes, a vast improvement.

I ain’t afraid o’ no ghost

That’s the latest news, Daddy.
Bartender: Mmm, there is no reason to go to the Great Sand Sea… I will make certain I don’t have any errands that would send you there, beloved daughter.

The bartender news system has a drawback. Because this quest was active before finishing Paris’s first quest, and still active after, it defaults to the next most important quest. Bartenders only ever tell you about one quest at a time, and it is always the same quest, no matter where you ask. However, this will randomly pick another open quest after we complete any quest.

Combat arts, for sure!
Fair enough. Then, time to get started!

Baulson here should obviously focus on Combat arts, as he has no mystic arts or offensive item arts worth mentioning.

So how about your Club? Why don’tcha let me take care of it for a while?
Sure, no prob.
F’r real? You’re alright.

Turn him down and he’ll say “This is why I hate people.” But we don’t need the club.

Would you allow me to borrow your Leraje Princeps?
Sure, no prob.
Thank you.

Would you allow me to borrow your Wayfarer’s Ward?
No prob!
Thank you. You’ve been a big help.

Everyone always says “can I BORROW this thing”, as if you get it back when they’re done with it. Noooooo, it’s gone for good. But whatever, he can have them, they’re Sovani-specific anyway.

I turn in one of the extra Warrior’s Broadswords that dropped from the Jhana, and get the Potion formula. I admit that I don’t really know much about potions. They come in varieties that boost your STR, INT, SPD, ATK, and DEF, and a token attack one. The “What should I know before I play” suggested to turn them off as they suck, I did, and don’t really know what I’m missing. I think it’s just 15% boosts. One problem is that you only ever get 5 battle commands per target, and this would just be stuff to clutter it up and screw things up.

Woah, that’s three screenshots already. We’ve got more than an hour’s worth of dungeons to do today, so let’s just get moving.

Hey, would you go look for me?
Nope.
Well, aren’t we boring?
Nobody calls me boring. Nobody. Sure.
Cool! So, there’re a bunch of pillars set up in the desert to keep you from getting lost. And they’ve all got IDs on them if you look close. If you look at them in the order: C-4-B-E-A-1 then… *shudder* The pillars are engraved with the language of the Old Kingdoms, so take this – it’ll show you how to read them.
Obtained Scribbled Note!
Accepted quest: The Silent Soul.

This quest is only available if you finished For Love the Bell Tolls. Quite a lot of quests require you to have finished that one to become available, and a bunch have this one as prerequisite as well.

Music: Swirling Sands

- Dungeon Video: The Great Sand Sea (Quest: The Silent Soul)

A lady magus wants me to recover an old treasure from the Great Sand Sea. She also gave me a code: C-4-B-E-A-1. I wonder what it’s for.

(Time: 0:11) Welcome to the Searing Cove – the first area of the Great Sand Sea. Don’t worry, there are only two. … :getin:

There are only up to 4 enemies in the Searing Cove, and one could be a rare.

I’ll show you the strength of Athlum!

learned Bluff III!

This guy’s not that threatening, despite the skewed morale and “You’re in trouble” music.

(Time: 5:11) From this bluff, we get a preview of the rest of the Great Sand Sea. It’s a pretty nice view. A sloping path leads down.

(Time: 5:36) That map? It’s at maximum zoom-out. THAT is the gimmick of this dungeon. Just one room, it’s easy as hell to avoid the widely scattered enemies, but it is loving gigantic.

(Time: 5:42) Here are the pillars we have to investigate for the quest. There are two lines starting from about this position. One goes to the left (the starting one is not pictured), the other to the right. If we were to investigate them, we’d learn that the left one is A, and the right one is 1.

There are no tricks here, they go in order, and our magus was kind enough to provide the order, and not the symbols we need to look for, which would have meant needing to look at every pillar. The only thing you need to do is keep track of them. Engaging enemies is not needed, so I won’t.

Our first one is C, just above and to the left of the beetle.

(Time: 6:52) It took about 1:10 to get here, although I followed a slightly curving line. The hardest step is are actually the next one. We need to get to pillar 4, which is all the way across the map.

(Time: 7:32) I first get my bearings by sighting on pillar 1, and from there, heading towards Pillar 2 (straight ahead). Getting any in the wrong order means starting again, obviously.

(Time: 8:04) There’s number 3. The numbered ones are trickier to find because some have fallen over, and the terrain is also trickier this way.

Engraved is a character that resembles someone holding an object. It represents the number 4.

(Time: 9:16) Stop number 2. Now we have to trek all the way back across the map to B. You can see pillars 5 and 6, and past 6 is the exit to the world map, unlocking the Vale of the Gods.

(Time: 10:32) There’s a Transporter back to the world map in the middle. There are also two other exits, both of which we’ll have to visit later on to unlock new world map locations.

(Time: 11:41) That is the hard part all done. It’s no problem solving the rest now. Getting to E is easy, just sight on the tall point and head that way.

Engraved is a character that resembles grains of sand. It represents the letter E.

Past here is another exit that unlocks Lavafender. We’ll visit that later. Follow the line of pillars back to A.

(Time: 14:46) Yes, it took three minutes to go in a direct line. But we’re almost done, just go across to 1.

(Time: 15:18) If you’ve done the sequence properly, this strange ghost-kid-thing shows up. If you do not see him, start over.

The ghostly kid turns around, takes a few steps and vanishes.

I used the code C-4-B-E-A-1 in the Great Sand Sea and a little kid appeared. I think he’s trying to guide me somewhere.

Good luck figuring out where the hell to go. The first time I played that, I interpreted his disappearance as an invisible door to someplace, and you had to walk through the specific spot you saw him vanish to proceed. Thankfully, that is not the case.

(Time: 15:49) Less thankfully, you now need to go track him down, and this area, as you know, is huge. The hint is to walk in the direction we saw the kid heading. Thataway.

(Time: 16:29) Our destination is between these two ordinary rocks.

(Time: 16:36) The kid vanishes as we get close, and there’s an investigation point.

It’s another rock.

The kid shows up again, and vanishes. Rush decides to give up and go back to town.

I guess… here it is.
A rock? Some stupid old rock is the hidden treasure of the Old Kingdoms!? Gimme a break! I thought I’d gotten such an awesome tip, tip! Ugh, guess I gotta work on my eavesdroppi-uh, my info-collection technique. Well, I don’t need this thing. Present for you!
Obtained Godstone of Souls!
Later.
Completed quest: The Silent Soul

Hey Rush, you can get anything in this town. I picked up this T-shirt for you in the Spirale market!
“I did two jobs in Balterossa, and all I got were these lousy rocks (and this T-shirt).” … Aw, man…
Kid, speakin’ as the experienced mercenary here, a little advice: Always negotiate your payment up front.

I brought the ancient treasure back to the lady, but she didn’t seem to want it. I don’t understand women…
Also, my friends are jerks.

Godstone Count: 2.

Okay, they’re not ordinary rocks, they’re rocks with writing on them.

Godstone of Love: One of the three godstones of an ancient kingdom. Engraved is a poem exulting the glories of love.
Godstone of Souls: One of the three godstones of an ancient kingdom. Engraved is a poem honoring the dead.

Yes, they will come in handy later. Much later. In the mean time, we’ve got one more sidequest to take care of, and since the dungeon took me a loving hour, we should get to that now, we’re already running late.

However, after being killed in his battle against the last monster, he ended up turning into the undead himself!
Super-ironic story, dude!
While doing some archaeological surveying, we may have somehow caused the warrior to rise from the dead…
You read an ancient inscription out loud, didn’t you.
Err… yes.
Real rookie mistake there.
Seriously.
See? Even Rush knows better, and he’s a complete moron.
Yeah!

…Hey, wait a minute!

It seems he has already begun to terrorize this town.
Huh, “he” who?
The undead we were just talking about?

I ain’t afraid o’ no ghost.
The ghost warrior haunts a small island in the shifting sands in the Great Subterrane. But if you cannot find a way over the sands, you won’t be able to pass to the island. It seems the warrior knows formations no longer used in the present age. Perhaps facing such a strong opponent will be a learning experience. There’s also been some reports of some large monster raised from the dead, terrorizing the enemy, but you probably shouldn’t worry about that.

Accepted quest: The Hero

Music: Into the Depths

- Dungeon Video: The Great Subterrane

The ancient hero came back as a monster. We have to go to the Great Subterrane and stop him before he puts Balterossa in danger.

I’ll be honest with you. I did NOT replay this game before starting the LP to refresh my memory. This dungeon is one you visit early on, but only like twice, and unlike most of them, I don’t even think it changes between runs.

This dungeon is divided into three areas, all of which are unlocked at the start. This first area, the Unspoken Path has exits to two areas.

As the Morale bar indicates, my BR entering this dungeon is notably less than the game expects – probably because I skipped out on battling through Robelia and the Ivory Peaks and the Southwestern Road and most of Mojcado Castle. I’ve avoided most fighting, really.

I have turned Blocter’s Power Grip arts off temporarily so he can get to the same art level with One-Handed as he has with Power Grip, synchronizing them again.

After this battle, noting that the spiders can inflict poison, I turned on Lotions for Rush in the hopes to use the Ragna-Rock to boost Lotions up to a decent level quickly. It didn’t work, because even when “Clear those Status effects” did come up for Rush, it was just to use Refresh instead.

This is the first time since Blackdale that I’ve done a lot of fighting, and generally for the same reason: The corridors are narrow and the enemies aggressive. The battles are dangerous enough that I have to pay attention. Case in point: This blooper battle.

When a battle is going this badly, just hit Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R. It saves time. It kicks you out to the main menu immediately.

learned Double Time!

Double Time is the only buff in the Invocations line. It boosts the speed of the target.

These Manticore-family enemies are called Deathclaws, and their Deathclaw attack does exactly what it says, there’s a chance of instant death. Goodnight, Pagus. Note that the union is still at full HP.

Here’s a riddle for you: What do you call alcohol made from flies?

*groan*

class changed to Expert Ranger!

There are two exits from The Unspoken Path. This, is the wrong one.

There is absolutely nothing quest-related here. That didn’t stop me from killing a lot of the enemies here, though.

learned Wind Shear!

Wind Shear is the next most powerful Invocation. It’s a single-target damage spell, an improvement over Spark, despite no status effects.

- Video: Rare Monster Vali

A rare monster in front of a treasure chest? I’m in.

Music: Sliver of Hope

Rare monsters tend to have unexpected tricks up their sleeves. I set David’s squad to “Play it by Ear” on their next turn, and…

Uh… even though I had disabled 2-Handed arts on Pagus, apparently “Play it by Ear” can override that.

Thunderclap is a staff move. The user leaps up and does a mid-air spin, using the rotation to add torque to the impact. (That did over 1000 damage, but it’s still crap compared to what a proper fighter can do.)

Crossbreak is a Power Grip art, a horizontal slash followed by a vertical one.

An AoE attack with a chance to paralyze, lovely. Paralyze seals combat arts.

Goddamnit you guys, this is getting annoying. Rush’s squad has died a few times and it’s bothering me. Here, Caedmon and Torgal both KO to the Shriek-inflicted Curse.

Thankfully, those were the only two casualties. Oh, and the treasure chest was just the map of the dungeon. Which I already had. I then disabled Pagus and Loki’s combat arts again.

Addle is another Psionic attack, it does moderate damage and lowers morale.

I had Rush’s Evocations and Psionics enabled to see if I could synergize with Caedmon and Torgal, but that wasn’t working because of a lack of AP. It also had the undespired side effect of muddying the available commands to the point where Rush’s Troop wasn’t getting Combat Arts commands too often. So I turned off both of those.

learned Resonance Edge!
learned Nimble Devil’s Due III!

Resonance edge is two consecutive swipes at the same spot. Despite there being a lot of fighting, I never actually managed to pull this move off in this update, but I did in the next one.

class changed to Adept Freelancer!

Here we are, the Tranquil Springs themselves. Can we get back on track now? It’s been 27 minutes in the dungeon and we haven’t found the actual quest area yet.

learned Nimble Devil’s Due V!

I didn’t notice until now, but Devil’s Due V grants a chance to inflict the Blacked Out status on a target. The Nimble and Mighty versions let that effect start to happen at Devil’s Due IV. For Swift and Peerless, you need Devil’s Due III. That’s pretty handy, as blacked-out enemies can’t attack or defend for the rest of the turn. All arts cap at V, so this is the highest that Devil’s Due can go – at least until I get Swift.

Okay here we are, the Sandfall Labyrinth, the quest area.

Unlike the rest of these mostly dull tunnels, this area is memorable, thanks to this scene of a sandfall from above pouring into a pit, which is itself a whirlpool of sand, getting sucked down to somewhere. It’s pretty cool-looking.

Our powers close the door;
Our wings reveal the path;
Our Symbol of faith proves us worthy.

There are two ways I can go from here. Not remembering anything about this quest except the end, I choose the path in the direction the wings point us. On the map, each intersection with a dot has one of these Steles in it.

I’m not getting past this Wyvern without a fight.

Dust Devil is another enemy AoE attack.

learned

learned Bladedancer II!

So I make my way all the way around, activating all the Steles I pass. This is a one-way slope, which lets you go down, but not up.

Only two more to go, on the other, shorter loop.

- Video: Unique Art: Ex Machina

The funny thing about this command is that it’s clearly worded as if Rush is indeed the one ordering everyone else in battle, even though there is really no reason why Rush would be in charge.

This is interesting. It’s Dave’s other unique art – the smaller version. Dave can only use this one at high morale and IF he is not in Deadlock.

It’s essentially a shorter version of the Gae Bolg firing animation.

class changed to Expert Freelancer!
learned Eclipse!
learned Spark II!
class changed to Freelancer!

I have no recollection of when Torgal learned Four Winds. Anyway, it’s a pair of slashes, first his right arms slash to the left, then his left arms slash to the right.

Third Eye is a Dual-Wielding art, but it is Katana-specific – no other weapon types can learn Third Eye, so I’ve never seen it before. It did over 6000 damage.

So, we’ve now been literally everwhere in this dungeon and there’s one last treasure chest, and uh…

OH FOR -

… I went the wrong way at the start. Now, I have to go do the whole circuit again. It’s not a huge issue, as the monsters are still dead, it’s just an annoyance.

Yeah!
The Stele has lost its power.

The wavy lines around it stop. One quick circuit through the labyrinth again (this time, off-camera), and...

This globe appears. It looks like the world map teleporter, and as you can guess, it serves a similar function.

It’s a local teleporter that can teleport you to a spot inside the dungeon. You can see the matching one on that island across the whirlpool.

- BOSS Video: Mantroskylo

Boss time. No, we can’t get the treasure chest.
Mission: Defeat the Mantroskylo!

Music: Sliver of Hope

This guy’s a lot less dangerous than the Mantroskylo in The Ancient War quest. Still, it doesn’t hurt to be cautious, so only Rush’s union will attack. David will stand by and Emma is assigned to heal anyone who gets hurt.

In fact, there’s nothing of interest happening in the first two turns.

This tornado looks flashy, but it didn’t even sting.

I didn’t get any options to heal David’s union, so he took a pounding.

Those guys must be pretty freakin’ weak.

But he gave better than he got, so we’re good, and the fight is over.

learned Nimble Bladedancer II!
class changed to Expert Monk!

This is for you.
(Please, please don’t be another rock.)
Hm? Ho… Seems you’ve learned a new battle technique. If you properly learn to use it, you can probably save Balterossa from danger as well.
Reward: 2500 G. Obtained Honor of Determination. Obtained Vanguard! You’ve learned a new formation!
Honor of Determination - Proof given to a hero who protected the ancient desert kingdom by slaughtering invading monsters one after the other.
Completed quest: The Hero

The hero-turned-monster is done for! Balterossa is safe. Go me!

The Vanguard Formation is one of the ones mentioned as being useful for The Ancient War quest. It improves the defense of positions 1-3 by 5-10%, improves the M.DEF of the leader by 5-10%. It gives a 40-38% penalty to the INT and SPD of positions 1 and 2, boosts the INT and MYS of positions 4-5 by 5-10%.

I honestly could not tell you at all why this particular formation is supposed to be so much better than any other drat formation for this situation.

That’s it for this update… well, almost. There are a couple bonus videos of Rare monster fights. I spotted these rares while wandering around getting other screenshots and such.

- Video: Rare Monster Irminsul

Irminsul, a Vicious Plant rare, found in Mojcado, Senico section. It likes to use Natural Gas (Poison) and Eclipse (Evocations), which hurts a lot. I did not save after fighting Irminsul, so technically, I never fought him on my playthrough.

- Video: Rare Monster Bloody Death

Bloody Death is a Demon rare in the Great Sand Sea. It used mostly normal attacks, but threw in Merry-Go-Round, an AoE attack which hurt a lot.

If someone says it one more time I'm having Florina show up as a corpse. I'm not even kidding, I was pissed off with people doing that shit back in 2010, and I'm not dealing with it now in 2016.
Huh, I could have sworn you were going to set up the other quest so you fought both bosses at the same time. I guess you didn't wanna risk it.

And the worst part of the game just passed us by, gently caress the Silent Soul, because you don't know what the pillars are until you talk to them, so what took 16 minutes could easily take double or more. The only way to deal with Silent Soul is Window TLR, activate a Trainer to give yourself triple speed, and just saying "gently caress Everything" and rush it.

I've finished recording Chapter 17 (beating a sidequest that was giving me trouble), and can get started working on that right away. I hope to become more productive. Only 4 side-quests left, and I think I might be able to cover two of them in one update.

That’s impossible as far as I know. Do you remember how side-quests instantly dump you into the appropriate dungeon? You can only have one active at once.

Eh, I didn’t find it so bad. The music is rather relaxing and the area is good-looking at least. And as I said you only need to talk to two of them, four at most (A-B, 1-2) to figure out the pattern.

No it's entirely possible, if you do then one of the bosses will join the fight as... sort of a guest.

It changes no rewards but It's interesting, and I have tried it myself so I can confirm it works

Huh, I never knew that. If I had, then yes, I probably would have done it like that. Okay, I've just done it that way, recording it for a bonus update later on. Hooray for 49 save slots.

****

When I first came to Balterossa, I actually accepted Paris's quest before taking the tour of the town, and that actually glitched out some of Betrude's dialogue after completing Paris's quest. What she actually is supposed to say is this:

I’m sorry I’ve caused Mother such trouble. Yet Paris is a wonderful man…
However, I will not be revealing the details of this plot to the public. I have my own idea of the culprit. Now, to spin a web to catch them...

I've added that back into the CH 15 update.

***

I forgot Rush's journal entries for The Hero quest:

The ancient hero came back as a monster. We have to go to the Great Subterrane and stop him before he puts Balterossa in danger.
The hero-turned-monster is done for! Balterossa is safe. Go me!

Those have been added back into the CH 16 update as well.

Since he won't be right up against the mob. Not that it endangers anyone if they are right in the middle of the group being wasted.

The omnistrike command is also obviously Rush talking.

He is going for the dual-wield katana class, isn't he?

On that note, the sovani Quad-wield is hilarious!! Or the dual spear thing, where they have two massive halberds. Great stuff.

A quick talk about initial BR for party members. A character you take from BR 5 to BR 15 will typically have better stats than a character you recruit at BR 15, because they gain more in battles. The next new party members have an initial BR of 15, which is what they expect the player to be at. Basically, fresh characters tend to start behind the curve a bit, so the lower your BR when you recruit them, the longer they'll have to gain stats.

Ironically my avoiding most combat after Blackdale meant that I was underleveled for the Great Subterrane, and the BR difference meant I gained BR and stats a lot faster than I would have normally.

After careful consideration of my current BR (15), the initial BR of upcoming party members (15), I've decided to postpone completion of the last two currently completable sidequests and resume the main quest in Chapter 18 NINETEEN. I will then pick up three new party members (Violet, Gabriel, and Nora) afterwards. However, that'll put me at 12 unique leaders, and I only have room for 9, which means that three party members will be benched. I decided on Blocter, Torgal, and Pagus, and my reasoning is that they have more experience and therefore better stats, so being benched won't hurt them much .

But there is a choice: They can be benched for one dungeon until I get a party size upgrade, or they can be benched for two sidequests and one dungeon. If I do the sidequests first, it can help boost my new guys stats a little, but the benched ones will get nothing.

I assume that most people would vote to get the party size increase as soon as possible, so is there any real point in holding a vote at all?

Talk about an epic failure!

Caedmon, what exactly are the Silver Falcons?
What are the Silver Falcons? …Perhaps the most apt description is that we’re a group of knights who fight for what we believe.
That sounds kinda… generic.
It doesn’t matter if you don’t fully understand.
I’ve seen a few of them around Balterossa. Is that all of them?
There are many others in the organization, but not here… Operatives carry out their own missions across the continent. As commander, I give directions to local operatives and they take care of the rest.
That seems like a rather loose organizational structure.
Granted, there are certain inconveniences in coordinating large-scale operations. However, when necessary, everyone will assemble. You’ve no need to worry. Oh, yes. If the Falcons are called to act, would you be willing to lend us your help?
Uh, well, it depends…
Certainly, if it was an action against your beliefs, you could refuse, no questions asked. Think about it.

What a coincidence, the Falcons are about to be called to act. But we have to leave the Merchant’s Lot first.

Sure, no prob.

Heya boyo. Reckon we might have the time to look for some Anthrovore Fragment?
Sure, let’s go.
You’re a big help. Let’s be off, then.

Music: A Friendly Ear

That’s the latest news, Daddy.
Bartender: Inside the volcano… If it were to cause an eruption, there would be nowhere to run. Alright, daughter, I forbid you from getting close to the volcano!
O-okay…

When you’re out in the desert, you can hear this sad, lonely voice crying from beneath the Great Sand Sea. That’s the latest news, Daddy.
Bartender: Cries from the desert floor… That sounds suspicious no matter how you slice it! Daughter, even if you go to the Great Sand Sea, I forbid you from going beneath it!
O-okay…

Caedmon has moved inside the bar, I wonder what he wants.

Will you lend a hand?
Sounds dull.
Of all beings that deserve mercy, the Jhana are not among their number.
Oh. In that case, ‘Course!

I need two secs…
If you have other pending matters, so be it.

Because this is Caedmon’s sidequest, I am making him the union leader in honour of that. I also adjusted the formation because I was tired of the Blizzard’s speed penalty leading to constant Interceptions.

You get two chances to decline this quest. It’s another battlefield, so you should be well prepared. If you are not…

Music: Sliver of Hope

- Blooper Video: The Silver Falcons, Part One

This seems innocuous: Unions 1 and 3 start out to the north of the Jhana, Union 2 (David’s) starts out to the south. We’ve got this tiny force sandwiched between us.

It was a trap. The enemy gets reinforced on the first turn, and intercepts us immediately.

This dodge-counter doesn’t help much…

Because most of them pile on to David. The only thing the dodge-counter did was change what would have been a Rear Assault into a second Flank attack. It still wasn’t enough to save David’s union from destruction.

I can’t revive anyone yet, and without David’s union, I simply do not have the numbers to withstand all the enemies we’ll face.

I tried several more times, even disbanding David’s union and merging it with Caedmon’s (and moving Rush to lead Emma’s union), in the hopes that making them big blobs of HP would help.

Nope! After two attempts of the mega unions, I concluded that Union 2 was inevitably going to get piled on and killed. Since there’s no way to stop that, the only solution is to just roll with it and revive them.

In other words, if I want to finish this quest, I have to go do other things until some people pick up Vivication Herb. I went to Gaslin to pick up some Manticore Talons for David and found…

Reward: Obtained Counteroffensive! You’ve learned a new formation!

The reward for Bluejaws. Looking around Athlum, Baulson wanted to talk some more:

When I was young, I’d run in with a bad crowd. Y’might say. Spent my time picking fights, making trouble. Me an’ the gang would loaf around the square here for hours… Hey, prolly sounds strange to wax poetic on bein’ a delinquient, eh? My folks died in the war …thinkin’ back, I guess I was lonely… any family would do.

So, we’re leaving Athlum behind to fight walking plants on the Southwestern Road, for some weapons components. I skipped them on our first visit because I didn’t have Caedmon and didn’t see the point in having Oakes get the XP instead of him.

I didn’t do the sidequest which is available in Athlum at this time. I didn’t think of it at the time. I did actually come back later on and record it, with the intent of pretending that I did it now… but I wasn’t terribly happy with the result, and this update is over-budget on images anyway. So screw it, we’re leaving the quest for later.

There actually are a couple harvesting points in the desert. This one sprayed Rush with something that charms monsters. They’ll follow him forever, but won’t attack him (unless they touch him, I think). Turning on Timeshift makes them Cower instead. I have one dig left, and I’m saving it…

For this morsel to upgrade the digs count.

There are only a few chests in the Great Sand Sea, but it’s the finding of them that’s the pain. Those tiny green pixels a bit to the left of Rush’s left shoulder are another chest. They contain a Qsiti-specific weapon Despair’s Edge, and another Wayfarer’s Ward accessory.

When wandering around I found this guy. Fighting him is a really, really dumb idea. I knew this before I attempted it (and saved).

This is one reason why.

So yeah, do not piss off Dragons because you are crunchy and taste good with barbecue sauce.

Let’s go someplace else.

Music: Rolling Hills, Sprawling Plains

Vale of the Gods – The only path leading into Baaluk, it is said that an ancient deity split a mountain in two in order to lure people within.

The Vale of The Gods is another transition map, it’s a canyon with some water in it. We need to pass through to the other side to reach our second completely optional town.

Obtained Letter of Rememberance!

That question mark indicates one of the items that you can take to Jorgen. How it survived in a pond of all places escapes me. You’ll also want to kill 8 or so crabs in total for a Guild Task. That’s in-battle, not units on the field.

learned Confuse II!
class changed to Lordly Ranger!

It’s a really pretty area. While I’m here I harvest some Steel Ore that several party members want for upgrades.

- Blooper Video: Rare Monster Wrath

It wouldn’t be this update if I didn’t fail at a rare monster fight.

It did over 1500 damage.

- Video: Baaluk Tour

Baaluk – It is said that ancient deities beckoned people to start a town in this land, far from civilization. This town is quite nondescript and has little local flavor to offer.

Music: Free and Easy (Baaluk Theme)

Baaluk – Grentze Commune: The Brimuslabus looks down upon this pastoral town, a gathering spot for people from neighboring settlements.

Woah, Dave, check this map out! If it’s right, we’re about as far from Elysion as it’s possible to get!
… I’m going for a walk.
I think I’ll join you.
Me too.
I shall go as well.
Agreed.
…Huh, I wonder what’s eating them?

Welcome to Baaluk, the belle of the west – or the end of the world, ‘pending on who you ask. This is the Grentze Commune, our main settlement. We don’t get too many visitors, so I’m sure everyone’ll be real happy to see you!

This town, like Balterossa, is completely optional. In fact, there is no quest in this town for us at all right now. So all we can do is take the tour.

Yeah, kinda hard to miss those.
Town legend says there was some terrible monster running wild, but the Imperator took the Remnant and sealed it in that very spot.
Huh…
‘Course, that was hundreds of years ago… If’n there’s any truth to it, I sure ain’t the one to tell. Only half-believe it myself, actually.

Small-Town Man: Some o’ them traders were saying there’s s’posed to be some huge cities, a couple times bigger than here, even. Speaking plainly, I think they were just pulling my leg. Like someplace that big could really exist, some on, I’m no idiot!
… I should introduce you to Dave and the others.

Staring Child: See that sovani knight standin’ over by the cliffs? That’s Mr. Wyngale. Mana says he’s protected Grentze for a long, long time – even since before I was born!

I’ve stood here for hundreds of years, watching over the Remnant Brimslabus and what it seals.

And that’s all he says.

Hey! It’s you, Emmy!
Rush, good to see you.
Man, you sure get to the most far-out places. Why do you do all this anyway?

What’s the purpose of my training? Well… a lot of things. But in general, training the mind and spirit, I’d imagine.
I guess I can understand that. I’m kinda training too, I guess.
You guess? What are you training for?
Well, my sister Irina got kidnapped. I tried to get her back, but the guys who took her are really strong. I guess one of the reasons I’m way out here is so I can get strong enough to take them on.

He-llo… So, you crossed the Vale of the Gods all by your lonesome? You must be stronger than you look. The legend ‘round here is that the gods created the split in the mountain range to invite mortals to come to the area. ‘Course, if I were a god, I’d just invite a bunch of hot guys… Heheh.

I turn in the “Slay seven Crabs” quest.
Reward: Obtained Lotion Formula. Rush can now use Lotions!

Lotions are Item Arts that cure status effects. That’s useful, but the trick is that the first one, Antivenin Cream, cures poison, and poison is both somewhat uncommon, and something you can just power through with healing anyway. Because the only way to get to the higher level arts is to use the lower level ones, that makes it a struggle to raise Lotions to a high enough level to get to the really important stuff. The developers realized this and lowered the amount of XP you need to reach the second and third levels of lotions, but I’m not sure it helps that much.

Refresh does most of the same stuff Lotions can, BUT Refresh doesn’t work when you are Silenced, in which case you’ll really want the Lotion that cures silence.

Bartender: Well, well! It’s been a spell since we’ve had a new face. Welcome to the Rift!
Lively Old Man: Some amnesiac is wandering around the cities in the desert, looking for something that could regain his memory. …That’s the scuttlebutt, anyhoo!
Bartender: Izzat so. And?
Lively Old Man: Memories, schmemories! Remember what you had for dinner last night? I don’t remember the snack I had a few minutes agao! Gahahhahaha!

Hey, someone else from the “outside.” I’m not from here either… Last year I was hired to escort a guy out here. Thing is, once we made it to town, the guy disappeared without paying me! I’ve been trapped here since then… I’m just working to make enough cash to get out of this hole. Nothing happens here at all… this place is like a complete waste of space. I can’t wait to get the hell out!

The Rift Owner: What’s this? You, you are an unfamiliar face. Doing a bit of traveling, sport?
Yeah, I guess.
The Rift Owner: Take a seat, have some tea. At least it doesn’t have any problems with it… I’m the owner here, and you wouldn’t believe the troubles I’ve had. I actually started out in Balterossa. Never have to worry about having too few customers there, eh? It’s pricey, though. I couldn’t turn a profit. So… that’s how I ended up out here on the edge of the world. Sad thing is – and this is where it really adds insult to injury – even this tiny pub out in the boonies couldn’t be run all alone. So… I was desperate. I went to town, found two guys who looked like they didn’t have anything else to do, and hired ‘em. Talk about an epic failure!
What went wrong?
The Rift Owner: Where do I start? The younger guy’s a lazy dog. I’ve seen corpses that’re more productive, ugh. But you know how mitra can be… no offense. Then the old guy, bless him, he’s enthusiastic enough, but completely incompetent. Can’t remember customer orders for the life of him. The customers themselves are mostly down-and-out mercenaries, so not really the type you wanna get too friendly with, you know?
The Rift Owner: *sigh*
The Rift Owner: I always dreamed of having a bustling pub full of attractive patrons having stimulating conversations about adventure and intrigue…
Err…
The Rift Owner: Ach, sorry, sorry. You come in here for a drink and then I end up talking your ear off. Anyway, next time you come out here, come back and visit, alright? There’ll be a hot pot of tea waiting for you, my treat.

Heya, Rush! I bet you’re bored like me… How ‘bout we go do some fighting, show some monsters who’s boss, eh?
Sounds like a plan.
Yeahh, that’s more like it, C’mon!

Rush, if you’ve got a moment, let’s fight a bit outside of town, shall we? Trainin’s the most important part of being a mercenary, ya know!
Sounds like a plan.
That’s what I like to hear.

Baulson and Blocter have just upgraded their weapons. I don’t think there’s too much more I can upgrade for other party members, a lot of it requires drops from areas we haven’t seen yet. Remind me to go back to Blackdale for Imp Fang, though. Pagus needs it but not that urgently since there’s not much more fighting before he’s benched for a little while.

Baaluk really is small, this city map shows basically the whole thing. The only other stop is the Lord’s Manor. The only place that seems big enough to be called a manor is the building with the Guild, though.

Baaluk: Lord’s Manor: A simple but practical manor, the administrators of Baaluk use this building to conduct their business.

Qsiti Advisor: Baaluk is currently without a lord. The two sons of the previous lord do nothing but argue over who is more fit for the position… The closest we’ve got to a ruler is Wyngale. He’s protected this town for a long time. But without a lord, who knows when there might be a Collapse?

Younger Lord Candidate: I-I’m going to be the next ruler of Baaluk… I hope! My older brother is too hot-headed… I-I don’t want to leave the Brimslabus to him!

O-okay… time to go…

Really, there’s nothing at all to do here right now. But keep some of that stuff in mind for later.

I like how well the world-building holds up on closer inspection. In Tales of Vesperia, monsters are such a big problem that people cower in cities protected by shields, but if I remember the LP right, they never really gave a good explanation of WHY monster attacks were so bad, never mind how human civilization could have gotten to the city-building stage.

Here, Remnants collapsing attracts monsters, and there are countless Remnants all over the world, many still probably undiscovered. But humans have learned how to use Remnants as tools and weapons, which makes the use of them critical, and a Collapse can be avoided as long as a Remnant is bound, so there’s a good reason why people are living around these potentially dangerous artifacts.

I took another trip through the Vale to get the shot of the map (I forgot to get the first time), and found this guy.

I highly recommend that you watch this fight, as it shows how hilarious the Ranger’s [Side On] ability can be. When you are flank-attacking an enemy, they can’t touch you except with AoE attacks, which this guy does not have. Better yet, as long as you continue to flank, you keep getting “Strike from the Sides” commands. I took the morale bar all the way from left to right just from the morale bonus from flanking.

I also have two blooper attempts at him, but the first one I won the fight with two unions dead, and the second I stopped the fight once someone died. There’s no real point in including them, so I didn’t bother.

Music: Clash of Opposites

This fight is also a great example of how to rotate unions. When an enemy union is multi-deadlocking two of your unions (and it is the only one on the field), it is completely safe to break deadlock to heal. As long as one union is still deadlocking the enemy, the one you retreated can’t be Raidlocked. Mind you, it can still be hit by AoE attacks. In this battle, Rush flank-attacks while Emma and David alternately engage and disengage (if injured).

Music: Reversal

The downside to The Last Remnants battle commands system is that you don’t always have the options that you want to perform, and you don’t always know what options you’ll get. The UPSIDE is that sometimes, you will get surprised when your unions do something unexpected in a good way. Here, I had just given Rush’s union the standard “Strike from the Sides” command, but the AI, all by itself, recognized that Emma’s union was hurting and reassessed to heal her back up to 1052 HP.

FINALLY.

It’s about time that we’ve learned Vivification Herb. David and Baulson have been with us the longest so that they learned it first. Caedmon will take a little longer, but I’m not going to wait. Two unions who can revive will do for now.

I turned off Baulson’s other Herb skill in the faint hope of delaying him falling into Scout, but it probably won’t work. It’s a bad idea because if his union ever REALLY needs healing, Emma can’t get it back up to full on her own, so I’ll probably turn them back on if I remember.

I think I also hit BR 15, which is a “red line” for recruiting certain new people. Enough stalling, there are Jhana to murder!

Rush, what do you think I should focus on? Is it really enough to maximize my command of mystic arts?
I’ve seen your “Thunderclap”’s damage. Definitely mystic arts!
Exactly! Goodness, look at me, doing all this worrying over nothing…

Would you allow me to borrow your Wayfarer’s Ward?
Sure, no prob.
Thank you.

At a request, I recorded a tour of the town. Watch the video if you want, it’s a nice looking town.

- Battlefield Video: The Silver Falcons, Part One

Yup!
Accepted quest: The Silver Falcons: Part One
Glory to the Falcons!

Music: Sliver of Hope

Ha, we’ve surrounded them! Close in!

I’ve decided to do something special for party member quests that we get while they are in the party: a day in the limelight, where they are the leader, even if they weren’t before. That’s why Caedmon is leading. We once again start split up, with Caedmon and Emma’s unions north and David’s south. I have everyone target union C.

It’s an ambush!
Crap, Dave’s surrounded!

David takes out the group of Nidhogg’s (E) attacking him. Emma takes out the Jhana Archfighters (B), and Caedmon eliminates Jhana Archfighters (A).

Yes, I do sometimes screw up the QTE’s, especially on defense.

Once again, David’s union is piled on and is left with 200 HP at the end of the turn.

Caedmon’s union is too far away to fight anyone up close. Evocations are long-range and I could use those to attack from a distance, but that won’t really help. So I order him to close in. I tell David to break deadlock and heal – not that it would really do any good. I order Emma’s union to save David’s no matter what.

David and Pagus heal themselves to full, which unfortunately results in Emma healing herself instead of closing in on the target. Oh well.

This was pretty unavoidable.

This time, though, FINALLY, we can do something about it. She will get Raidlocked by union G, but that’s a fair trade for bringing back David’s Division.

On your feet!
I was only taking a little nap!

Emma follows that up with a Restore III taking David back up to 1052 health.

Forward, show no mercy!

Evocations don’t do as much damage as Invocations. The silence status is also useless on these physical attackers.

That turn was a little rough on us, to say the least, but the good news is that there are three targets for the enemy to spread their attacks among, which helps a lot. I’ve got no choice but to have Caedmon and Emma break deadlock to heal, but David is free to engage one of the flanking unions, so the damage gets spread out a lot more.

I immediately regret turning off Restorative Herbs III on Baulson, as Emma’s Restore only takes her up to 611 HP. Still though, David takes out his target, and the other union freed up attacks him as well. Emma’s union is fortunate to get two blocks on three attacks.

I don’t really like any of the options David has with his union. I could tell him to keep his HP up, but instead I have him “Play it by ear!”. The smart choice is for Emma to break deadlock to keep her HP up, but there are no other enemy units free, so I actually decide to have her go all-out for the kill, ignoring her low HP.

Rush gets Blacked out, and he was supposed to perform a healing action. David’s “Play it by ear” just had them attack three times normally. Not very effective.

At least Emma’s attack went according to plan. Blocter and Baulson went first and crushed the enemy, and Emma reassessed to heal, because there were still enemies left on the field. The AI can be pretty smart at times. Unfortunately, this isn’t over yet…

They got reinforcements!

Five more enemy unions pop up. I have Caedmon and David keep their HP up. I decline to send Emma charging at the 5 distant unions, instead she’ll pile on the union deadlocked with David, with instructions to heal him.

After a couple turns of grinding it out, we’re back down to 3v3. I give “keep your HP up” orders to the injured unions.

Oh, come on. One final wave to deal with. But by now the morale is leaning in our favour, and this is only mopping up.

The Jhana were getting out of control, so I helped Caedmon suppress them a bit. I think they got the hint. Hehe.

All right, Rush. Enough is enough. We must return to Elysion at once. I’m sure all of the other Lords must be there already.
Actually, Marquis of Athlum, you are mistaken.

Mysterious! Oh well, it’ll have to wait until next time. (Also the main quest will resume in Chapter 19.)

I actually wasn't going to mention anything because I didn't remember... Anyway, I think this is one of the reasons the game is so fun to me. It's dense as hell. And I never even found Baalurk my first time through even with the exploring. But you can pretty much explore all of Beltarossa's areas from the moment You're allowed to leave Elysion. I don't remember many roadblocks in this game in fact. beyond the game itself expanding previously unreachable parts of areas for quests.

The next update is almost done. It's written and the screenshots are done. The next few updates will be about half the size they normally are for pacing/cliffhanger reasons. But they should be coming fairly close together.

Yeah, one reason why I'm skipping the last two sidequests for now is so I can grab a couple new party members early. On the other hand, certain late-game party members start out with a boatload of advanced stuff already learned, which helps compensate.

Good luck, Rush Sykes. My country is in your hands.

Wait, ME?
He awaits you in Royotia Castle.
So you may rest assured, Marquis, that the Congress has not yet begun.

That’s the latest news, Daddy.
Bartender: Irate merchants, huh… Beloved daughter, if some merchant tries to pick a quarrel with you, call Daddy at once, alright?
A-alright…

Now that we’ve cleared Caedmon’s quest, his speech bubble is red, so let’s talk to him before we hit the road.

Hey Caedmon, I was wondering how the Silver Falcons got started.
How did the Silver Falcons come to be? Mmm… A mitra was the founder… This all happened decades ago… At the time, I had gone to the mountains above the town to view the Tao Tie. As you know, sovani are very proud beings. Like most of us, I had always kept to myself. There was a shabby-looking sellsword who wandered the area. Whenever he saw me, he’d call out a hello. At the time, I found his familiarity rather impertinent… Not too much later, monsters assaulted the town. It was terrible timing, as the army had been called abroad. Balterossa was thrown into a panic. That’s when that sellsword appeared. He gathered the mercenaries of the town, and led them against the monster hordes, saving the town.
Sounds like he was a real hero.
I could not understand his actions. Why would he risk his life for a bunch of strangers? What was his motive? He caught my interest. So I decided to join him. He was the first leader of the Silver Falcons. … This story has run long. Perhaps I will continue it later… That’s enough for now.
Okay, thanks Caedmon.
You are welcome, young Sykes.

All right, to get to Royotia, first we need to pass through the Great Sand Sea aga-

Hello, Rush. Not to be blunt, but I’d like your Shamshir. Would you lend it to me?
Sure, no prob.
Appreciated. It’ll be used hard, but used well.

So, you might have noticed me eying your Bandana of Grooming… Would you mind lendin’ it to me for a bit?
Sure, no prob.
Thank ye kindly. Don’t see many kind souls like you anymore!

To get to Royotia, first we need to cross the Great Sand Sea again, following the lettered-columns and exit through that opening.

That unlocks Lavafender on the world map, which we also have to pass through.

Music: Dark Secrets

Lavafender – A large, lava-filled cavern leading to Royotia. It’s dangerous, but less so than the mountain pass.

Well, it’s at least a change from the grey and brown tunnels. I didn’t do an flyover video because we’ll be back soon enough.

Near the start is this “Blazing Door”. Naturally,
The door is sealed shut.

- Video: Rare Monster Vodianoi

This is a frog rare. It never got a chance to do significant damage. I didn’t actually fight it in the real save file.

And that was Lavafender. It was relatively painless lava dungeon.

- Video: Royotia tour

Music: The Seat of Vulcan

Royotia – This ancient mining town flourished after commencing trade with Balterossa. It is now known throughout the world.

Royotia – Byon Sector: This district is filled with all kinds – from dangerous people to travelers just passing through.

Hey there, buddy! This’s the heart of the mining city of Royotia, Byon Sector. There ain’t much to do, but feel free to make yourself at home.
I think I see someone over there who already thinks he’s home. Specifically, that the street is his bathroom.
Okay, don’t make yourself QUITE that at home.

Royotia is our third optional town. Another one never visited in the main quest, ever.

Gossipy Man: Psst! Boy, hey boy! This ain’t somethin’ you should go blabbing all over, but… I hear the little Lord Paris’s been makin’ eyes at the daughter of the Duchess of Balterossa. She’s a sweet li’l thing, she is, not a lick like that harpy of a mother… Thing is, with the trade route kerfuffle ‘tween us and Balterossa, Lord Paris can’t just go layin’ down the charm, if you know what I mean. Star-crossed lovers an’ all… Can’t help but feel bad for ‘em, eh?
Wait, so Paris is Royotian royalty?
You were unaware?
Man, that whole situation is just… so cliché. I think I’ll take a look around town.
I’ll wait in the bar. Come get me before we go see what the Lord of Royotia wants… with you.
Agreed.

High-Spirited Miner: If ya need a buddy to help ya out, try upstairs – if yer little stick legs can get you that far! The guild’s full of guys that’ll help you for a price.

Admiring Man: Lord Priam is a very disciplined and dependable man. Conversely, Paris is sensitive and kind… much like his mother, may she rest in peace.
Paris doesn’t only have good qualities. He’s also a cheapskate. He paid me with a rock.

I spotted Emmy, let’s say hi to her.

Thanks for the offer. Maybe someday you can.

However, the ore is real rare, and there aren’t many folks who’ve found a vein. It’s rumored there’s some in Lavafender, but… That’s a hell of a place to dig… literally!

Hey, kid. Have you been to the southern cave, Siebenbur, yet? There’re ruins a thousand years old down there.
I’ve seen plenty of caves, thanks.
We mercs are regularly hired as bodyguards by excavation groups and scholars wanting to see the ruins. It’s not bad money, if you’ve got the patience to deal with the jabbering of scholarly types. Thing is… It’s rumored there’s some giant monsters running around and breaking up the veins of ore.
Sounds scary.
Eh, I’ve never come across one, but I’m sure I could easily take down one or two single-handed!

You should always talk to everyone at least once. Talking to her unlocks a location on the map, and it’s not the last time. Again, no one interesting to hire, so let’s go to the pub, the Firestone.

Bartender: Welcome to the Firestone.
Passionate Miner: Some amnesiac is wandering around the cities in the desert, looking for something that could regain his memory. An’ that’s the story!
Bartender: Harumph harrumph… harrumph. Amnesiac… obviously you are my rival! …Though I guess you wouldn’t know it.
Passionate Miner: I think you’re unforgettable, boss!

Pub Regular: So I was digging when I ended up all the way in Lavafender. Guess I got carried away… Anyway, that’s when I see it…
What? What did you see?!
Pub Regular: I swear to Marion this wasn’t a mirage – but I’m in this sweltering-hot cave full of lava and I see this young girl just standing there, all alone. So, of course, I go to her – I mean, it’s dangerous, no place for some little slip of a girl – and get this: she disappears. Insane, right? I figure she’s gotta be a ghost with unfinished business. That’s the only explanation.
… are you sure she was really there?
Pub Regular: Hey, I toldja it wasn’t a mirage! I know what I saw!

Long time ago, deep within the earth’s molten core, twin birds signifying good and evil were locked in eternal battle.
(Geez, does every town have its own legend?)
(Every town large enough to have a Remnant does. And more often than not, they’re not just legends, but actual history.)

The founder of Royotia saved the bird of virtue. In return, he gained weapons strong enough to defeat and take over the surrounding lands. However, the bird of virtue fought again with the bird of evil, and lost. The founder was absorbed into the evil beast. When all was almost lost, the bird of virtue began to sing a lament… a lullaby. Upon hearing the sad, gentle song, the bird of evil fell asleep and sank beneath the lava, to slumber for eternity. That legend has been told in this land for hundreds of years. Still, there aren’t too many people interested in such fairytales nowadays.

Hey Dave, let’s go up to that castle now!

Royotia – Royotia Castle: This castle stands as though it looks upon the entire town. It was recently rebuilt after one of the lookout towers collapsed in an earthquake.

You are in the presence of the Marquis of Royotia. Please be silent.
Uh, I’m Rush Sykes. Was someone expecting me?
My lord, Rush Sykes has arrived.

*bird of prey shrieking from overhead*
This is… It seems I must request a task from you. That roar you hear is the call of this town’s protector, the Flame Guardian. I know not why, but it seems you are being summoned.
Me?!
Him?!

Sounds like it’ll eat me…
Don’t be ridiculous. The Flame Guardian is a very important person to this country. At the very least you should hear what she has to say. I trust you will meet her?
Alright, I can do that.
Good. Here – the key to Lavafender. With this key, you may open the gate my people have long stood watch over. Proceed within to the deepest lands. When you reach a plaza surrounded in fire, you may meet the Flame Guardian.
Obtained Blazing Key!
Ahem. Speaking frankly, to my knowledge, this is the first time the Flame Guardian has ever met with anyone not part of the royal family. What would she possibly want with you?
Search me.
Forgive me, I’m speaking to myself. Go, young Sykes.
Accepted Quest: Into the Abyss

- Dungeon Video: Lavafender (Into the Abyss)

Music: Dark Secrets

Royotia’s marquis, Lord Priam, wants me to go listen to the Flame Guardian’s story. It would help if I knew who that was…

Yeah! Let’s open this!
The door has been unlocked.

The video includes some fights, but I actually saved over that file with a save I wasn’t happy with, so I actually redid this and just used timeshift to dodge the enemies. This is more generic tunnels. Skip to the end!

That white column is where we have to go. This quest has no mandatory fighting in it at all. It only exists as setup.

Who are you?
I am the Flame Guardian. I am the watcher of Vespalia, that which would lavish destruction upon Royotia.
I was kinda expecting someone a little less… generic-looking.
I have called you here to perform a task for me. To protect Royotia, will you destroy Vespalia? Our time grows short. Vespalia has struggled for lifetimes to break free from its seal. Soon it will succeed. Once the bird awakens, it will destroy all of Royotia.
So that ancient legend is actually true?
Vespalia is not only strong, but possesses incredible fortitude. It would take a miracle to defeat it. Nevertheless, we are not without recourse against it.

If there is to be any hope of destroying Vespalia, all nine Crimson Shards must be assembled.
Crimson Shards?
The Crimson Shards are drawn to those with strong wills. Go to the powerful of this world, and you shall easily find the Shards. Once collected, the Crimson Shards may be combined. Depending on this combination, they take the form of a shield, bangle, or blade. And thus, equipped with Crimson Blade, Bangle, and Shield, it should be enough... Enough to give you the power to destroy Vespalia once and for all.
Is the blade a Katana? Because I’m kinda only proficient with those. And specifically, two of them.
………
When you believe you are up to challenging Vespalia, return to this place. Please, aid us in this time. You are our only hope.

And that’s it, we’re back in Royotia Castle.

To save my country, you must destroy this beast, “Vespalia”… This is the first I have ever heard of such a monster in Royotia… But if the Guardian says so, it must be truth. As for these Crimson Shards here, at least I may be of some assistance. Royotia’s oldest treasure is a vermillion stone that sparkles like flame: the Manoryll Salia. It’s said to be the rock’s heartbeat. It is a fabled gem of our great nation, yet I will give it to you.
Obtained Manoryll Salia!
Huh… this looks kinda like that stone you gave me, Emma.
What?
Yeah, take a look.
That is… yes, that is another one of the stones. Wherever did you come across it, General Honeywell?
…Sadly, I don’t actually recall. It’s just a jewel I picked up on my travels.

Well, it doesn’t matter. I plead to you, Rush Sykes. Do whatever you must to protect Royotia. This passageway leads to the Flame Guardian. When your preparations are complete, please use it. Good luck, Rush Sykes. My country is in your hands.
Completed Quest: Into the Abyss.
That Vespalia is trying to destroy Royotia. I need to collect nine Crimson Shards and make it disappear!
For now though, I must attend to the Congress.
As must we, Rush.

We now have 2 of the 9 Salia stones that are wanted. Technically, you don’t need all nine, I think you can do it with only three. But each of the nine stones is acquired through a sidequest, so of course I’ll get them all.

Salia Stones: 2
Mano Salia: A red stone known as the roc’s eye.
Manoryll Salia: A red stone known as the roc’s heartbeat.

This is the new location. But we’ll come back later for a quest, so no sense ruining the experience of the featureless grey tunnels early.

So, back to Elysion!

Based on the actual game, that would be in just two dungeons. In terms of the LP, we're looking at let's see... 1, 2, 3... I'm going to say 5 chapters. But since I just recorded Chapters 19. 20, and most of 21 just now, it'll probably won't take too long. I'd say within two weeks real-time, if I can maintain production of updates at a reasonable pace.

Note that Emmy knew Rush's name and that he was looking for his sister without him telling her either of those things (ignoring my embellishments to the script). But it is not unreasonable that word of Rush's quest gets around. People talk, and Rush is traveling with a large party, plus there are the Athlumian guards who accompanied Rush on his first three missions.

By the way, are my script embellishments entertaining, or just a waste of time?
