Speaking of Joni Culver Ernst...

quote:

It has almost become a cliche that the politicians who bray the loudest about cutting government waste and slashing "entitlements" turn out to have learned what they know about the government trough from the inside.

The latest example is Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, who rode her tea party small-government platform to victory in the 2014 election. Ernst is viewed as such an appealing figure by her GOP colleagues that they chose her to deliver the party's official response to President Obama's State of the Union address on Tuesday.

The public spotlight might not prove to be Ernst's best friend. The District Sentinel, a Washington, D.C., news co-op, reports that despite her campaign pitch that her parents "taught us to live within our means," her family members collected $463,000 in federal farm subsidies from 1995 through 2009.

The figures come from the Environmental Working Group's authoritative database of farm supports. Most of the money, more than $367,000 in mostly corn subsidies, went to Ernst's uncle, Dallas Culver, and his farm in her home town of Red Oak, Iowa. An additional $38,665 went to her father, Richard Culver, and $57,479 went to her grandfather, Harold Culver, who died in 2003.

Big surprise, her family are ag sub-collecting welfare queens. Also 20% of the people in her county are on food stamps but she wants to cut that too.

I was laughing the other day when this rich high school classmate of mine posted a Milton Friedman quote saying "if you put the government in charge of the Sahara there would be a shortage of sand within a few years" or something like that. This from a guy who went to public K-12, has went to two public universities, drives on government-built and government-maintained roads, can fly from here to his university in the Mountain West without crashing into another plane and dying thanks to government oversight of airspace...

These Randian supermen are almost invariably two steps removed from Craig T. Nelson. "I've been on welfare and food stamps. Did anyone ever help me out? No!"

A distressing number of people think of college as nothing more than vocational training these days, I find and have gotten into screaming arguments about. Getting a well rounded education that allows you to participate more fully and capably in society? gently caress that, what job prospects does it open up?!

Thankfully, none of my students have (yet) pulled their equivalent, the "well I'm paying a lot to be here so I'm entitled to a good grade or else I might not land a good job and that'll be your fault." I'm thinking about seriously losing my temper when/if that one comes along.

There are serious problems with the way "college educations" are funded these days. Outlandish tuition costs outstripping inflation, job earnings and the "added value" of the degree, paid for by undischargeable debt given out freely to 18 year olds with poor long-term planning skills. Wanting some sort of confirmed ROI on a expensive college education seems pretty rational. College is certainly the key to a lot of dead-end entry-level white collar jobs, so there's plenty out there for the philosophy/art history set, but wanting a useful skillset for adult life to be included in a $80-$250k price tag doesn't sound unreasonable.

It seems like people who are against federal aid just don't view something as aid if it's not spelled out as such. Literally everyone benefits from "socialism" in America: roads, police, firefighters, paramedics, and every other service that you're not paying a specific fee for is paid for by your taxes. Public schools are paid for by your taxes. America has always been a capitalist/socialist hybrid rather than purely capitalist, which is why you're not billed when the cops show up to help you. But since it's not called "federal aid" and your taxes don't say exactly what every dollar goes to, they just kinda view it as a cost of some sort and ignore it.

Keep in mind that if you look at any politician, he's likely to be woefully out of touch with reality even if he's a decent guy. These are people who often don't know how to drive themselves or maintain their own house, let alone understand what life is like below the poverty line, because they've often had years of people being paid to do poo poo for them.

Cops are a bad example of that though because they really don't have anything to do with the federal government. They're an entity of the city you're in and are primarily funded by the state. Yes, they receive federal grants but that's a very far way from saying that they're paid for with your taxes.
