I have heard rumblings that he'd alienated a fair amount of erstwhile-supporters by being so antagonistic towards Obama and, by so doing, the US government generally. Whether that is 1) actually correct, and if so 2) translates into voter movement, I cannot say.

If you think American politics is racist, you should see Israeli politics. Last time I was in Israel, open use of the n-word to describe Obama was socially acceptable.

Ron Paul spent the weekend speaking at a secessionist rally, because of course he did.

quote:

“A lot of times people think secession, they paint it as an absolute negative,” said former U.S. Rep. Ron Paul. After all, Paul said, the American Revolution was a kind of secession. “You mean we should have been obedient to the king forever? So it’s all in the way you look at it.”

...

The event was organized by the Ludwig von Mises Institute, an Alabama-based think tank named after an Austrian economist whose writings are highly respected by libertarians. Ron Paul is a member of its board.

“We’ve been conquered. We’ve been occupied by the state, and its phony veneer of democratic elections,” Deist, the day’s first speaker, said, contending that the federal government has taken on powers the Founding Fathers never envisioned. He continued: “Why not seek out ways to split apart, rationally and nonviolently? Why dismiss secession, the pragmatic alternative that’s staring us all in the face?”

Other speakers offered a number of definitions for “secession.” They said individual states could break off, notwithstanding the experience in the Civil War (“Lincoln violated the Constitution” to keep the union together, one speaker said). States could even break off and join other countries, if they wanted.

“If Texas wanted to secede and they wanted to join Mexico, I think they can do that. There’s nothing stopping them,” said Brion McLanahan, another speaker.

“I think Mexico is in many ways far freer than the United States,” Deist agreed.

Well prime minister polling isn't as easy to break down as presidential polling but the general feeling right now is that Netanyahu has a better chance of forming a coalition but not by much. The election won't be the end of the story and there's a lot of poo poo happening in back rooms right now that will form the basis of whatever emerges.

Basically, it's entirely possible that Bibi loses his position but maybe a little less likely than the alternative.

The Diet certainly wouldn't do poo poo since conservatives hold power now and have for decades with the exception of brief sporadic periods. Shinzo Abe, the prime minister, semi-recently announced his government would officially reinterpret Article 9 so that it would allow them to go to war if their allies were attacked.

The Japanese supreme court does not appear to have any teeth. There have been 2 unconstitutional elections since 2009, and both times the Supreme Court has basically said, "We'd very much appreciate it if you chaps over there in the Diet could fix it, but no rush." These unconstitutional elections were about seat apportionment in the Diet, and the upshot is that Japan is gerrymandered on a national level. You're looking at a voting disparity of 2x-4x between rural and urban voters. The Japanese supreme court is not consistent about these rulings, though, and in the past has said that a disparity of 5x was alright.

American politics is at least entertaining while it's soul-crushing. Japanese politics is just soul-crushing.
