Ehh, i'd start with his first two albums. His new one is really good, but imo it's really dense. You gotta pay a lot of attention to it to get the "full value" or w/e. F&L and The Cool have a much more mellow, bouncy vibe and you can just listen a lot more (although the lyrics still sneak up on you).

The structure of his new one is different. there's like a 1 minute instrumental that sounds like something from the flashbulb, then you get an 8 minute song that's no hooks or anything-just straight rapping. It's drat impressive but you also gotta be wanting to listen to 8 minutes of rapping (which i'm not sure a lot of dudes here can do). The whole thing is kinda set up like that, with brief interludes and then really long songs with all sorts of wordplay.

I like dense hip-hop and rappity rappers so I'm definitely open to starting with that even if it's not what I should expect from the rest of his discography.

I really liked Niggy Tardust too, I'm going to go back and revisit it. Re: Kendrick, what do people think of Section.80? Seems like a lot of people don't talk about it. It wasn't a mixtape or anything, was it? I even think a couple of songs on there were better than anything on GKMC (ADHD, HiiPower, Kush & Corinthians). As far as I'm concerned K.Dot has two great concept albums under his belt already, so the ONLY thing (except for "I") that makes me worry about his next album is the fact that he's famous now. Not being hungry and having a lot of "yes men" around you and in the studio have ruined many a great rapper's careers.

I'm a little worried about the new Kendrick album because its felt like he bought into his own hype as the savior of hip-hop ever since the Control verse came out. "i" really worries me because it feels like the first step of Kendrick disappearing entirely within his own rear end in a top hat a la Lupe Fiasco.

The by all means, start with the new one. Dude's rapping his rear end off for sure, and there's even some features that are like whoa.

I've liked all his albums. I think people don't talk about it as much just due to age and the fact it's not "new". Also it wasn't a mixtape but it was much more an independent release (although I think it's still sold like 200k so that's not horrible or anything).

I'd worry about that if the track from Colbert Report wasn't disgustingly good.

Listen to his Mixtapes in the Fahrenheit 1/15 series. Personal favorite is Mean and Vicious, or Handcuffs

Jarren Benton's EP Slow Motion is "officially" out today (someone linked it for streaming about a week ago in this thread). It's pretty good. I'm not a fan of Kato's production--he's not terrible but not that great either. Benton's lyricism is really strong, though.

Best guest verses are (I'd say) the ones by Jon Connor and Wrekonize, but the best track for lyricism is probably the first one, You Don't Know Me:

Tetsuo & Youth is a pretty good album. I don't know what's Lupe is talking about and I don't really love it. But it is a good album. I like about 4 songs off it, particularly Body of Work. The lyricism is a little too dense and comes off as an influenced by GKMC. It sounds acoustic friendly. Lupe can be serious or sarcastic and I like him when he is being a little silly.

No shots or anything, but what makes it seem inspired by GKMC?

I've been seeing other's say it, but I just don't hear it.

It has a grand(er) scale, acoustic friendly, overly rappidy rap. Lupe is always like that to some degree but T&Y ramps it up. Lupe said recently that Kendrick was his biggest influence among current rappers.

GKMC might not seem like it but it has a melodic quality about it, a jazz sound.

I don't think it's directly inspired by it, but the structure with extremely long songs I could see him trying a bit due to GKMC being "accepted".

You'll also get that comparison some because the type of lazy comparison you can easily make since it's two super-rapping dudes making "artistic" albums. Kinda like anything the slightest bit abrasive now and for the next few years will be compared to Yeezus.

The Lupe album and GKMC are both pretty indulgent. That isn't always a bad thing though cause when you are on top of your game (like Lupe and Kendrick are on those two albums) it can work to your benefit.

Suge Knight got into a fight on the set of a film project in Compton, ran over a man who later died, and then fled the scene.

Multiple witnesses tell us a movie shoot was going down with Ice Cube and Dr. Dre when Suge pulled up in his car. We're told security told Suge to leave and that's when trouble began.

A fight broke out between Suge and 2 men. Suge got back into his car, took the wheel and threw the vehicle in reverse ... and ran over a man who suffered fatal injuries.
