Just randomly found this artist on Spotify. I thought she was relatively popular because her songs aren't bad at all, but I was surprised when I saw that she's only got a few thousand views. Definately recommend it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UFb_PkEBmE

Yeah she is pretty cool. She had an album out last year and it's not bad. Her first EP is still the best, though. Also features the best headgear.

Some fragments where the vocal line ascends are, but even there the variations in speed and rhythm make this whole lawsuit laughable. The fact that both songs are so different in feeling and arrangement adds to that. It's not a Oasis/Neil Innes situation where it seems that both songs start out exactly the same. Bad Blood is Katy Perry, Blank Space sounds kinda like Lorde, Out of the Woods is obviously Bleachers/Fun., Style is no one in particular, but it's super synthy, and I'm sure there are more. She even popped up a signature T-Swift song in How You Get the Girl.

Even if they are similar, I still don't understand how that should mean Smith owes Petty money. There's no loss of earnings, it's not like teenage Sam Smith fans would have been buying Tom Petty records were it not for this 'rip off'. I guess intellectual property law is just fundamentally hosed up

It's a very strong similarity, not just the chords but most of the melody. Anyone who can't hear it needs their ears checked. Still, I think a lawsuit is completely unnecessary. Or at the very least, completely uncool.

I like Style a lot, and Taylor's videos are usually pretty good even if I don't like the songs themselves, but yeah, this feels a bit weak. It kind of reminds me of a watered-down Teenage Dream, which is not the direction I expected her to go in. Also I don't know if she counts as pop (especially with this album) but Florence + the Machine released a new song as well, with a video that's more than a little : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgeKHTcufLY I'm so hyped for this album.
