Maybe a board game they can play or something simpler like word searches or mad libs. Even if she can't participate, a puzzle book might be good for him. Something to keep him from being too bored sitting with her. How far does he drive to the hospital? It may sound corny as hell but if it's a longish drive or he's going back and forth a lot maybe find him a CD he likes to keep his spirits up. Or one he can play for her while he's with her.

I wish I could be more help but I've never been in a situation like that. I hope she gets well soon!!! Keep us updated and we'll send good thoughts your way!

She's not actually conscious right now so this stuff I'm filing away for later. The whole thing to do idea is great. Loading up a laptop with games / an old phone or something would certainly help give him something to do.

Have some Bilbys because they look ridiculous.

Thanks for these suggestions. I'm wracking my brain for ideas to help my stepmom, but she can't really read in the hospital since her vision is still a bit blurry, and small text gives her a headache and could send her into relapse* (she has Guillain-Barre and they're doing everything they can to keep her from setbacks). She's always liked to read, so I wonder if a book on tape would help? Or some language lessons? She's still pretty weak--was only able to sit up for a few minutes yesterday, propped up--but her mind is clear and she must be bored to pieces.

In exchange for your kindness, I offer an ACTUAL mimicking raven:

I didn't tell you they weren't (they give birth to live young. The only mammals that don't are platypus and echidnas).

Hey thread, looking for some ideas to help out a few friends.

One of my close friends has taken a really big fall out bushwalking and is in a super bad state. There is not a lot I can do to help her right now but want to do some nice stuff for her partner. Currently have card sorted and am cooking up a bunch of food so he can spend more time with her in hospital and come home to have a lazy burrito to pull out of the freezer or what ever. Looking for some other ideas that might help out a bit.

It may be a little weird and may cross a personal boundary for some people, but if they are cool with it, offer to clean up/straighten up their place. If applicable mow their lawn/shovel their driveway. This might be better for when she gets out of the hospital, since she will likely be spending some time recovering and he probably can't take off work forever.

Chickens can be cute too. Here's a picture of a chicken I saw at a show the other day. His little muffs were adorable.

Silkie chickens are always super cute. This one had a ponytail to keep the feathers out of her eyes.

Bernese Mountain Dogs are the biggest and dopiest animals ever. We have a fat one that's probably around 10 years old now. She's getting up there in age and has trouble getting around sometimes but every time she gets out in the snow she goes absolutely insane and rolls around in it, totally forgetting how old she really is.

They're so cute...my boyfriend and I were bickering (playfully) about what dog to get when we buy a house. He likes little dogs, I like big ones and I want about four greyhounds, maybe a great Dane and a boxer, or just some goofy gently caress we find at the shelter. We were watching Too Cute! (I know) and those guys came on and we both fell in love.

My boyfriend's parents' dog, the GSD/pug mix I posted earlier, is 15 (give or take, another rescue) and still chases tennis balls like a goddamn puppy. He's faster than any dog I've ever seen and completely obsessed with tennis balls. After a while, when he gets tired, he'll roll around in the grass, periodically stopping to re-position the tennis ball under his shoulders for a little massage.

Once we threw a yoga ball out in the courtyard and he almost gave himself a stroke trying to catch it in his mouth.

Echoing this - my dad had kidney surgery last week and just got home this past Monday from the hospital. A small gesture like this (depending on how close you are) can go a long way in easing some of the burden while they recover. If you're not sure how to approach, politely ask if you can help with anything or let them know they can call if they need something, a simple approach and it lets them know you're willing to help without being intrusive or getting too personal.

A good Samaritan, who has since been identified as Chris Laudani, was seen shoveling the Boston Marathon finish line of snow.

quote:

UPDATE: The mystery has been solved. The shoveler has been identified as Chris Laudani, a bartender at Back Bay Social Club.

“I only did it to send a message… I love the Boston Marathon and everything it stands for, the finish line doesn’t deserve to be covered in snow,” he told Boston Magazine.

“I think it’s cool that so many people feel the same way, but I saw the word ‘hero’ being tossed around and that I don’t like. I’m no hero, I’m just a nut who loves the marathon. The real heroes are the people who were out there clearing the streets and sidewalks, the [Boston Police Department], and the [Boston Fire Department] who risk their lives every day to keep people safe.”
