Are these hard to get? As in do I need to jump now if I want them? I've already got it all on vinyl but some of those were my favorites back then so I'm very tempted.

I just emailed the folks that pressed them and they say they plan to press again in 3+ months. The current pressing is rapidly selling out everywhere, though

I like it. Hasn't been a real stinker yet other than maybe the RL Burnside record which I haven't rushed to listen to again. And I guess I didn't need another copy of Madvillany but it's cool to have it on wax.

You get a record club only edition of a record every month in the mail for about $25 bucks. Sometimes it's something current but hardly obscure (perfume genius, war on drugs), sometimes it's a reissue.

From what I was reading yesterday, they also opened (or are opening?) a store to buy other records that will only be available to VMP members. I just got signed up this morning so I haven't had a chance to check it out yet.

So is it albums you can only get through the club or just colored vinyl editions of poo poo you can buy anytime?

No, I have other poo poo of his from the 60's that floors me. I don't get the vibe of that record though. Seems maybe too much a product of its time?

The second one for the most part I think. They're limited exclusive editions, sometimes numbered, and if you care about it some of them sell on discogs for like twice what you pay for them.

But like with that RL Burnside lp, I'm not sure if there's another easy way to get that on lp right now, but I think that's more the exception to the rule. They come with custom artwork and like the most recent one has a custom lyric sheet created by youth lagoon that's exclusive. But really I just like getting surprised with stuff on the mail once a month and getting music I might not pay attention to otherwise.

VMP's packaging is also quite cool and is a significant part of the experience for me. I've gotten two duplicates through them now but I still think it's worth it for the sheer experience of it all.

Also, it's a lot of exclusive colored editions of already released stuff, but every 11-12 months or so there's a re-press of something you couldn't actively buy new anymore, so maybe that's an extra incentive?

Nah if you don't like the weird blend of him and more modern rock music and some sampling, it's understandable. Mr. Wizard is probably my favorite of his.

The track where they sample him saying "that motherfucker stole my check" is worth a laugh though.

Anyone who subscribes to any record club that isn't the one run by Light In The Attic needs to have their head examined.

EDIT: I mean subscribe to any service that makes you happy, but LITA beats all comers for obscurity, quality, and value.

My area of the state finally has an actual record store than isn't an FYE in a mall. It's an hour away. That said, so were both FYE's.

The prog selection isn't very good, but prices are more than reasonable on used.

Didn't really have much time to browse, but picked up (pardon the crappy camera):

Apparently, it's an earlier pressing of All Summer Long as Don't Back Down is credited as Don't Break Down on the front.

I signed up as well. I dig their selections and what you get... at least the bonus art work seems cool, I couldn't give a drat about the cocktail recipe. If you read their FAQ they started the company with a record collection about 10 records big so I'm assuming they didn't realize how doofy their company's name sounded.

Bootlegs have some or all of the following:
- A hand etched matrix number (in the case of mine)
- A line missing from All the Madmen
- Lousy audio quality (also in the case of mine)

I guess a lot of bootlegs were created when Bowie just started getting big but before RCA got out their re-release with the black and white kicking Ziggy cover. Sucks too, because I found another copy that might have been legit a year ago and didn't pick it up.
