ZeusJupitar posted:They're probably going to have to make major changes if they want people to invest in their heroes and keep the tension up. Right now it seems like the only finite resource is the player's patience - you can potentially just through wave after wave of redshirts at the dungeons until they crack or you do. Uh, what? Redshirts are poo poo against anything that isn't a level 1 mission. Even some level 1 missions a fresh-new hero won't be able to complete. To finish a dungeon, you're going to need to complete high level, high difficulty, long missions with multiple campfires. You are NOT completing those without ranked up, equipped, skilled up adventurers. You MUST invest in your heroes already, unless you just want to grind easy missions for gold forever? The game keeps going forever because you could keep doing level 1 mission forever, but you won't get any further in the game until you do commit to some heroes. And then you're inherently invested in those heroes, and losing them means starting over. You can start missions with a fresh crew and abandon them to pass time, which is cheesy. And we've discussed that and they may change that. But that doesn't mean that you can beat a dungeon with redshirts. No way dude. ZeusJupitar posted:I've just realised that the player character's family name is 'Darkest'. It's right there in the names; the Darkest Dungeon underneath the Darkest Estate. I got a chance to play this at a friend's house today and it's super fun. I think it could use more classes, though. Once I got a few upgrades and stuff, I was just racking up the negative quirks... it got pretty hard to balance that with Stress vs. just hiring a new dude from the same class. I think my favorite team is Crusader, Highwayman, Grave Digger, Cleric in that order. I also ran a team of Hellion, Occultist, Bounty Hunter, Plague Doctor in that order and stunlocked everything. The only problem is Occultist's stun actively makes the torch grow dimmer as he summons horrible tentacles. I had an awesome moment where my team started to break in morale, but when my Crusader topped off on stress instead of becoming paranoid he exploded into Stalwart (I think it was), and then spent every round knighting his teammates "I dub thee... Warrior of Light!", boosting everyone's stress all over and saying metal as gently caress iceburns to the skeletons we were fighting. I had a moment where my Highwayman tried to use a Confession Booth in a dungeon and got the message something like "his sins are too great", and his stress increased. I wish there were more camps, I love the camp skills. I'm sad that you throw away all your provisions in between missions. My Occultist read every book I came across, and absolutely every one gave him some evil curse. Game owns. Firstborn fucked around with this message at 01:37 on Feb 3, 2015 |

When the Crusader did that it was awesome, man. Everyone else, every turn, was saying poo poo like "We are never getting out of here!", and when the Crusader's turn came up and he was knighting people, it actually gave them the "BUFF" pop-up and status. Not sure what it did, but it was awesome. His whole team turned into jello, but he just got stronger. One thing I hope this game does in the final version is remove the tutorial. I had to restart a few times, and I kind of wish I could skip the opening dungeon. Another moment I remembered: Grave Digger used Gallows Humour at a camp, the joke was "What did you call 4 idiots who died in a dungeon?", the 75% chance to relieve Stress failed, and then she said something like, "Ahh, you morons don't know humour anyway" Firstborn fucked around with this message at 01:53 on Feb 3, 2015 |

Nerfing the fusilier will make the tutorial a lot easier, because generally him getting a crit put everyone at death's door.

I wonder if that will be his class passive, would make sense in a way

It seems that he does have a greater chance. I've had a Cleric and a Bounty Hunter get the buff instead of the panic before, too, but they didn't actively buff my other teammates like the Crusader did. Every round, he gave a different teammate a buff and hollered that they were knighted/a soldier of light/etc. It was really loving cool.

Argh. My bounty hunter is just racking up the negative quirks. Right now if his health and the light are too low he takes a -20% damage penalty. Sucks, but I really only use him for ranged stuns and pulls and then wait for the occultist to mark something if he wants to contribute damage. But even when he destresses he gets new bad quirks. Guy can't win. Really thinking of firing him but the only bounty hunter available to replace him is not much better. And I'm attached to the guy. Honestly everyone I brought in to make the B-team has been kind of useless. Not useless enough to die, but not good enough to win. Honestly wish a few of them would die so I wouldn't have to worry about firing them. Somehow kicking them out feels worse than dumping their bodies in the graveyard.

Real quick observations, I think if you were going to judge characters, I think the best way would be deciding which is the best in slot for each of the 4 places. I think Hellion is probably the best up front, Crusader mid, and Leper the worst. Second slot I'd probably give to Highwayman or Occultist, third slot I think Bounty Hunter is best as a support dude, and mid maybe Plague Doctor, then worst probably being Grave Digger even though I love her. I think the last spot is a competition between Cleric and Jester, with Cleric having way more flexibility and Jester being a Stress Song mule. You can have a full moveset of great stuff from the Helion in the front row, and if she gets pushed back, you can still do Breakthru (SIC?) from any position. Crusader I originally set out to max the Stun attack, but I think after some playing that the Zealot Scroll thing that hits the front two enemies is honestly a little better. He really works well with Bounty Hunter using his pulls to get weak enemies up front and slaughter them. Leper's Hew attack seems really good, but he has too many self buffs I think when this game's meta seems focused on killing as quickly as possible. I really like his sprite, though. Second slot, Highwayman using his bleed attack, grapeshot, and sniping back slot enemies with pistol shot is just too good. Occultist has a nice stun from this position, but it darkens the torch. It's honestly identical to the Cleric stun, but has to be used closer to the enemy and has a drawback. While we are talking about the dude, his heal sucks in comparison - he can be paired with the Plague Doctor to remove the Bleed, but that's using 2 turns, and since the skill starts off healing 0-10, you can and will heal 0 and give your dude a Bleed. Sucks. Third slot I just have to give to the Bounty Hunter. He has a nice stun for the 3-4 slot enemies, nice pull, can still use his regular axe attack that has no -DMG penalty. Dude is solid, and lets you fool around with enemy placements which is kind of fun. Plague Doctor gives a superior stun that only hits slot 3-4, but the rest of his moveset is pretty bleah. Grave Digger gets some cool snipes, and an interesting attack that hits slot 2-3 simultaneously, but is pretty lackluster besides. Fourth slot I just have to give to the Cleric. Ranged 100% stun that restores your torch, Heal, Snipe that hits any slot and heals herself (probably her strongest attack, too), and I give her Illumination since it's an attack that can restore your torch from any position if she gets pushed around. Jester Im not too impressed with... stress song is good, other buff song is way weak, and his regular attack throws him in front of your tank, which sucks. Am I missing anyone? Honestly, I can't wait to see what Man-At-Arms is about. I hope he is a good 3-slot type dude with plenty of moves that affect enemy formations like the Bounty Hunter.

Would allowing a single camp in the short missions trivialize things too much? Their difficulty can swing wildly, it seems.

I have this weird suspicion they're making mercs to be holy/neutral/profane aligned, so the parties would sort something like Vestal / (houndmaster?) / (man at arms?) / Crusader Plague Doc / Bounty Hunter / Highwayman / Leper Jester / Grave Robber / Occultist / Hellion So houndmaster would be a cc specialist and man at arms would be a high hp damage do-er. Yeah, Hellion also makes a good slot 2 or 3, but I think best at slot 1 with respect to taking other classes with more limited optimal placements. Edit: I guess something has to be said about Crusader's Holy Lance ability, too, but I have a hard time making great use out of it unless it's super specific. My favorite team so far has had two crusaders at the front, both with holy lance and the stun move. If anything is in the back, they take turns punishing it for its cowardice, which smoothly removes those shotgun bandits and priority spellcasters. When nothing exists to be lanced, they tag team to stun the front ranks. I like to put a bounty hunter with flashbang behind them to stun anything they don't kill. Alternatively, I like to have a Hellion who spams YAWP! to lock down the front row, while a vestal or bounty hunter handle stunning the back ranks. Fourth guy can handle just straight killing.

Beat the wizened hag without any losses! Holy crap that was tense. My team rolled up to her without even needing to rest (and I forgot to use the camp in the last room before the boss, and it wouldn't let me go back once I entered the hallway ) but her thing still had me really worried that I was gonna lose somebody. Now I've got some level 3 heroes who won't go on easy missions anymore. Oh boy. I am loving the Occultist-Highwayman-Hellion-Hellion or Vestal-Highwayman-Hellion-Hellion combo. Hits HARD.

I think it's a good sign and testament to the game's design how many viable party combinations there already are. I don't feel like it punishes you too much for experimenting with it either, unless you do something really dumb like take 4 plague doctors.

It'd be cool if stress spirals could have much rarer reverse situations where there's a stress removal spiral -- like everyone on death's door, and one max-stress character has a superheroic moment that inspires the others with huge stress removal that keeps going as long as you don't die, or something similar.

First casualty: RIP my plague doctor, eaten by a wizened hag. The higher-level dungeons are _much_ harder than the starting ones. I've gotten pretty efficient at wrecking the easy levels, but my team of level 3 dudes got stress-wrecked really fast in a medium dungeon. Time for some prayer/whoring, I guess. Playing easy dungeons makes status effects seem really strong, but after going through a dungeon and seeing no resist below 45% means I'm going to need to rethink my priorities. I actually ran into accuracy problems, so I guess my guild+skills are underleveled. It's really not that hard to level some dudes to 3 without having enough goods to upgrade them to their potential (gold issues aside).

That sounds like a potential Crusader thing, if you ask me. From what everyone's been saying, a Crusader at max Stress turns into a goddamn superhero. EDIT: Grave robbers are cool if you put a pair of them in the mid ranks, constantly stunning enemies and poo poo. I managed to roll with the following party: Occultist/Grave Robber/Grave Robber/Highwayman and it worked surprisingly well, even though the Highwayman's +Dodge items reduced his max HP by like 5-7 points.
