I've been contemplating starting a recurring thing where I'll buy a new(ish) game for a goon that wants to play it, and they can post a detailed summary/review of the game.
I did this with Alien Isolation and Palpek, and it proved to be quite helpful to the thread.
I like to give back to the Steamgoon community when I can, but gifting a single game to a goon here and there only benefits that one goon. I think having them post a summary/review will help the whole community.
I'm not expecting the reviewer to like the game. If it's poo poo, it's poo poo, but please explain why.

My questions to the thread are:

1. Is this something this thread would like to see? Or does it belong in a separate thread?
2. What criteria should the summary/review include?

I thing at a minimum it should contain:

a. Gameplay score
b. Fun factor score
c. Story/Characters

Other suggestions?:
- Graphics
- Value
- Comparison's to other well-known games of that genre
- Originality/Improvements on element done in previous games

anything else I'm missing?

I like this idea and will try to whip something up for the most recent game you gave me: Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris. It's even on sale, so the timing is good.

Does Valkyria Chronicles ever get past the "puzzle level" slump around chapter 7? I gave up on the mission where you have to chase a vehicle through a city, blocking off alleys with your tank and shooting it with small arms because the levels were starting to feel like they had one intended solution which I was expected to figure out through trial and error instead of actual tactical battles. The level before that (getting the two separated units back to the tank) was a little better, but the stealth mission before that and the battle against the giant tank in the desert soured me on the game, so when I got to a third mission like that I just gave up.

It's not that those levels were particularly hard, but I kept forgetting to save after beating them and alt-F4ing out. I had to redo them like 3 or 4 times each and realized that they're not fun and don't have any strategy to them.

Gimmick puzzle and stealth levels? Hmmmm... maybe not the game for me. Thanks.

The stealth level is maybe five minutes long and you can just kill everyone that you come across in it without any problems. Plus there aren't very many gimmick puzzle levels. I'm about 12 missions in and the only ones are stopping the car without exploding it and the level where you're using the smoke launcher to get through choke points, neither are big deals.

"Stealth level" wasn't really the right term, it's thematically a stealth level but there's nothing stealthy about it. You only get two characters, one is wounded and the other is an escort. The reason the mission sucks is because it was a run down a linear path that only had like four enemies and you had to avoid spotlights, except the wounded character has a very slow walk animation so the turns take a while and all you're doing is limping forward. On its own it wasn't that bad, but I kept forgetting the game doesn't autosave and hitting alt-f4 after the mission, then having to re-do it. I think I did that mission 4 or 5 times and it was never any different from the first time, just a walk down a linear forest path and stopping in a few spots to shoot someone.

The reason it made me mad is because there were 3 levels basically all in a row that were similar; there was a very specific intended way to beat it that wasn't obvious the first time you attempted the mission, because it usually involved setting up for things that didn't happen until a later turn. It was a pretty dramatic change of pace from the levels before which felt like actual fights where I was duking it out with the enemy army.

The other levels were fun and I liked them. If I hadn't restarted those missions due to my own forgetfulness I would have kept playing and if the missions go back to the way they used to be I would probably enjoy the game, but having to replay those three dumb levels multiple times each due to my own forgetfulness left me salty.

You do know that you can save anytime in battle, so you could just have multiple saves at various points of a fight to revert back to in order to not replay an entire map. And though it's too late now, but for anyone that's playing it now, during the "stealth" section, you can walk up to the glowing flower things and it makes the wounded character move in a more normal manner.

When half the stupid enemies orbit around you, and you have to lead them waaaaay ahead to actually hit them, the game was more frustrating than fun.

Yeah, it was just me being forgetful, not blaming the save issues on the game at all. I mostly play roguelikes and ironman-style games so it didn't even cross my mind, and I'd leave it alone for a few days each time and then forget it happened. I did get all of the flowers, they just expand her AP bar back up to its full amount though, they don't do anything about the speed of her walk animation.

If it's any consolation all you need is one ~youtube superstar~ to look at your game and you'll be swimming in sales. The original Binding of Issac sold poorly until youtube people started streaming it 6 months later and suddenly it took off like crazy. Something like a 200% sales increase because of that.

With Kragger's request in mind, here is a short review of Lara Croft: The Temple of Osiris. Temple of Osiris is an isometric arpg where you plunder temples, collect gear, and help Osiris take down that butthole Set.

The tombs are full of traps, enemies, and challenges. Here is a quick look at a standard set of challenges:

And traps:

Each of the tombs also contains a weapon. The weapons vary in power, firing speed, and ammo consumption. You can equip up to 4 at a time to swap with the directional pad.

You can use the gems you find to open different tiered chests at a chance for high quality rings and amulets. You can equip two rings and one amulet. Rings add bonuses like weapon damage, speed, and bomb radius, and may lower stats at the same time. Higher quality rings will only have bonuses, and more of them. Amulets are a whole different story. When the multiplier gets high enough your portrait electrifies and puts your amulet bonus in to effect. This can range from adding ice damage to bullets, spread shot, regenerating health/ammo and more. It can change up your gameplay depending on the combination you use.

The main goal of the game is to run around the (small) overworld, pick the temple you want to tackle, and obtain a piece of Osiris:

Once you have completed the entire Osiris statue, you can take on Set. The boss battles in this game were great. I won't go in to great detail as they should be experienced, but one of them involved fighting a dung beetle on a giant rolling ball of poo poo.

Overall I really enjoyed the game. It took me around 4 hours to complete the solo content, and a bit longer to wrap up the challenges for each temple. The co-op content is great fun as well. You and up to three others can tackle different challenges and be dicks to each other as you inevitably butcher the puzzles. If you played the first game, it is more of the same with some added equipment. It's currently $6.79 in the Squeenix sale which is a hell of a deal in my book. Even if you don't have friends you can enjoy the solo content for a few hours.

I'm enjoying Darksiders 2 so far but I've only done the first main storyline mission (reopening the forge), and people have said in the past that the game is way too long and gets repetitive and bloated, so I hope that has been overstated :ohdear:. Maybe because the gameworld was already pre-established by the first game, but I'm finding this one a lot easier to get into/understand than the pretty uneven first game.

It helps that your "companion" this time is just a bird that stays the gently caress out of the way and is actually useful, as opposed to the companion in the first game who was annoying, with a voice performance phoned in by a bored sounding Mark Hamill doing a basic variation on his Joker voice.

What the first game did have going for it was that War had his powers mostly stripped so it made sense he had to struggle his way through fights as he restored his status. This doesn't seem to be the case at all with Death, yet he's still comparatively weak when the game starts and has to build up his powers/gear, and mindless beast/demon creatures seem capable of going toe to toe with him, which is kinda weird when he's supposed to be DEATH.

Yeah, Darksiders 2 is awesome in the Forge World. Everything feels big and interesting, and there are a ton of new powers you gain.

Then you get to the land of the dead. And to speak to the lord of the dead, you need to find 3 macguffins. To access macguffin 1, you need to go down 3 passageways. Once you have macguffin 1, you need to go to where macguffin 2 is, and go down 3 passageways. Then you must do the same for macguffin 3. Ok, now you have all 3 macguffins, it's time to talk to the big guy. Oh look, he wants you to talk to 3 people, and they all have 3 tasks for you to do. And each of those three tasks involves you going down 3 separate paths in the same place that all generally look the same, to do the same things in.

During this entire time you'll learn no new abilities, so it's basically just nonstop combat.

No idea what comes after that, because I couldn't stomach beating it.

On the bright side, a whole bunch of ex-Vigil guys/Joe Madureira got together and formed a new studio, and are working on something that sounds like it'll be revealed within the next few months. And since Madureira not so subtlety hinted that he was working on Darksiders 3 for Nordic last year, we might actually hear about Darksiders 3 this year. Or at least something similar.

World 2 was my favourite part of the game and in my opinion has the best visuals of the game, it's just easy to be sick of the game by that point with how long world 1 is, and how long you then have to spend in world 2.

Looks fine to me.

My review of shadow warrior:

The game is played with either the keyboard or game controller. IGN gives Shadow Warrior an 8.6 out of 10. Shadow Warrior has graphics, and it also has sound. In addition to shooting, you can also move your character. 50% off your next pizza order if the Sixers score 90 or more points, use code SIXERS at checkout. Sometimes there are obstacles to avoid, and you have to avoid the obstacles. There are enemies to shoot, and also things happen. If you reach the end, you win the game, and if you are killed, you die. The game features a variety of locations and enemies, but if you don't press any buttons, you will not experience most of them. Think outside the bun. #I'mlovingit In conclusion, Shadow Warrior is a game that you can play, that has graphics and sound, and it can be purchased from Steam.

I feel like the random loot in Darksiders 2 was there specifically to justify the customization the cursed weapons or whatever once you start getting them. It's hardly the most complicated crafting system I've ever seen but it was kind of interesting and fun to build the most overpowered scythes you possibly could by hoarding the weapons with the stats you wanted.

On that note, Jerusalem, if you want to trivialize the combat at some point hold onto any item that gives health/rage (or whatever the blue orb is in Darksiders 2) on a critical hit to throw into cursed weapons. Getting either one of those, though especially health, every time you get a critical hit (and you will be getting a lot of critical hits with the scythes) can allow you to basically laugh at any enemy or boss. It's also basically a requirement to get through the 100 wave combat arena so if you want to try and do that thing you'll need them anyways.
