Has there been any advancement on the minis + cards + chits storage front? I have multiple games now that use more tokens than fit in a tiny baggie, more cards than fit in a poker tuckbox, and loads of minis. I figure this is probably the best place to ask. Lugging poo poo to the FLGS is getting annoying compared to the olden days of book + minis + dice. Are we still just using Plano poo poo?

I have games that use shitloads of chits and for those you can't beat GMT counter trays. For other parts... yeah, pretty much, tackle/screw boxes. Minis get magnetized or put into foam trays. And someone here recommended Ultra Pro 2x2 card holder binders that could be handy when you need specific cards like for Warmachine/Malifaux list building.

I did actually see a BBBBZ list in the last two tourney I went to, whoever flew it did well. It's a good 'stall for time' list.

Anyway, went to the official Store Championship today, 6 rounds of swiss. I came in 11th out of 45 with a record of 4 wins, 2 losses. Only 3 spaces away from the knock-out tournament (but man, I was kind of glad to leave and get back home, since the knock-out would have taken probably beyond midnight.

I went with this list, it turned out to be pretty good!

Tekopo posted:

Soontir 27 Points
+ PtL 3 Points

Whisper 32 Points
+ ACD 4 Points
+ VI 1 Point

Bounty Hunter 33 Points

First match I went against a person that had only played a few games, with a AAXX Outer Rim Smuggler list. He spread his guys out, I picked them off one by one, I only got 3 points of damage inflected on me in total :effort:

Second match I went against a guy with Soontir Fel with Opportunist (:what:), Turr, Carnor Jax and an alpha. I lost my own Soontir after he got the stress crit, but destroyed everything else apart from that.

My third match was against someone flying two Blue Squadron Bs with FCS, a Rookie X-wing and 2 Prototype pilots with Chaardan. I thought I would do well against this but I got cocky, my asteroid placement was poor and he just out and out outplayed me, preventing me from getting good decloaks on whisper and shutting down Soontir. The guy ended up in the top 8 so I wasn't too displeased. I lost 100-0 but I had a situation where I had a 4 shot with focus against a B with only one hit point and didn't manage to destroy the B.

Fourth match was against a whisper with VI, Tactician, ACD and enhanced scopes (:what:), two alpha squadron inties and howlrunner with swarm tactics and a shield upgrade. I managed to one shot both alphas on turn two of the match and I got REALLY cocky. I lost whisper after parking him on an asteroid by mistake (I thought I had done a sharp turn so the decloak I did was wrong, then I lost the Bounty Hunter (after destroying howlrunner). The enemy whisper was down to one HP, he did a weird k-turn and I blasted him apart with Soontir. Not a convincing win but I'll take it.

Fifth match was the match of the tourney for me. Faced 4 Academy TIEs, Dark Curse and two Alphas. Early on I lost whisper due to something dumb, managing to kill an Alpha after one-shotting it with the Bounty Hunter. The Bounty Hunter played bumping party against the TIE swarm while Soontir move in, with the Bounty Hunter taking a lot of punishment. Soontir managed to kill another Academy and the Bounty Hunter took another one down before dying (BH was the star of the match really, he did so much in there). This left me with Dark Curse with one 1, 1 damaged TIE with 1 HP and 1 full health TIE against Soontir with no damage. I hunted down Dark Curse and took him out (finally) and since I was winning on points I made Soontir run away for time. I managed to down the damaged TIE and time was called, so I managed to win on points. Probably the best game of X-Wing I ever had.

Sixth match would have made me go to the top 8 if I won, but I faced a list seemingly designed to take my one on. It had whisper with FCS, ACD, Navigator (I guess it worked) and VI and a Chiraneau with Rebel Captive, Engine Upgrade, VI and Ysanne Isard (iirc). The only way to fight the Decimator without getting screwed was for both Soontir and Whisper to fire at him, with Soontir unable to use PtL because otherwise he would get two stress and Whisper not wanting the stress since then he couldn't recloak. The guy also won the initiative roll (and subsequently gave it to me) so I couldn't pin down his whisper either. I was tired and just couldn't think myself out of the puzzle. I'm still struggling to think what I could have done. Lost 100-0.

Overall I had a really good time though. Everyone was friendly and the atmosphere was awesome. I really like the Soontir card as well!

I get what it is trying to do but you are losing a lot of opportunities/arc-dodging for a potential additional dice. I guess you are screwed anyway if you lose initiative but I was just able to get out of his way and his limited number of movement options meant he had 0 chances to get whisper in his sights. He can't act defensively by going two focus + evade, he can't boost + barrel roll + focus, if he doesn't get someone in sights (which is less likely since he can't boost + barrel roll), he can't use a focus either defensively or offensively, even if he fires first and is against a PtL Soontir, he can't use opportunist anyway, there are just so many downsides that flying a weaker Soontir for 1 point more is just not worth it.

If there isn't a way to reliable strip focus (and since you have high PS, your Soontir is likely to fire first), you are poo poo out of luck. I just don't rate it comparing to the tried and tested PtL Soontir, sorry.

Had about 20 players out here- more variety than I expected. When I left the 2 undefeated players were going at it- both running identical Fat Hans w/ Corran.

I'm getting to the same point. I have a large hardware/screw box for all the tokens, a small one for 10 or so or tokens on the road, a slim binder with card pockets for the pilots and the ships are kept in the boxes.

My friend uses a couple of either 4 or 6 litre Really Useful Box and keeps the ships in there plastic holders and for around £5 each that's what I am looking at.

Another friend has a KR Multicase and it is great but doesn't have much flexibility when you want to take more ships than yo have space for

It cries out for PS 9 SO BADLY when up against anything that moves after it. Also, if you point your Outriders nose anywhere near another ship's flight path, you deserve whatever bump/ donut hole / focus fire happens to you.

Yeah. One of the guys at our store won one of the big FF events, with the Fel, Whisper, and Yorr list. He is excellent at flying Whisper, and I want to play against him and see if I can make it work. I run Blount with ion missiles and VI and a Rookie as the rest of the list.

The 2400 is so fast, and with Dash avoiding obstacles, I think staying out of Range 1 might be possible. Just don't know if it has the firepower to kill Whisper fast enough. Blount shuts down a lot of other problem craft by killing Stealth Devices, and the Ion might be enough to handle Whisper. PtL with Kyle really shines against other big ships which are really common, and helps arc dodge swarms, so I'm hesitant to give it up yet.

This weekend we had a great Saturday down at the local spot in Canterbury (UK) with a turnout of 8 players and 3 rounds of grown men making blaster sounds in a basement. The local meta is pretty predictable, though I've been trying to come up with an entertaining list to enter into next months games.

I figured I'd throw this in front of the Outer Rim Goons to see if they had any opinions.

========================== [Touching Tips] ================================
Arvel Crynyd (28) A-Wing (23), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Proton Rockets (3), Intimidation (2)

Kyle Katarn (32) HWK-290 (21), Ion Cannon Turret (5), Recon Specialist (3), Moldy Crow (3)

Prototype Pilot (20) x 2 A-Wing (17), Proton Rockets (3)

=======================================================================

I just felt the Hawk needed a little more love, and what better an excuse to hand out focus tokens like fruit pastels than proton rockets?

Incidentally, any Kentish Goons in the UK interested in joining us next month? I'll plug the games day next time one rolls around.

Tekopo

Can I make a suggestion if you are going to go for Kyle Katarn and A-Wings with Prockets: try and see what happens when you mix Jake Farrell with Kyle. This was pointed out to me by a friend: with Kyle Katarn on his side, Jake can do the equivalent of 5 actions.

If you have Jake with PtL, you can do the following:

1) Spend Jake's Regular Action to evade (for example, it also works with a target lock).
2) At the start of the combat phase, assign a focus token from Kyle to Jake
3) Immediately Boost or Barrel Roll using Jake's ability
4) Push the Limit off the Boost/Barrel Roll to perform a Focus Action
5) Do either a Boost or Barrel Roll (whichever you didn't do in step 3)

You end up with two focus (one for attack, one for defense), a target lock/evade (depending on if you want to make sure to have punch or be more survivable) and have both a boost and barrel roll available.

EDIT: Also, the above also means that you don't have to get Veteran Instinct on Jake, because he will do his barrel roll/boost after everyone else has moved, no matter the PS. Additionally, he can still do all that even after he bumps (minus one evade token/target lock). It's hilarious what you can do with Jake when you pair him up this way.

I'm still interested in hearing about Soontir + Opportunist though, Strobe. Are there lists that can make it work?

Soontir + Opportunist is a bit more flexible in terms of maneuver than Soontir + PTL. You lose out on the ability to boost+barrel roll and get a focus, or evade and double up focus, but you gain a lot of offense in exchange. You can still perform a boost or barrel roll for positioning during the activation phase, or if you can already get a good position (more on that in a bit) you can go for something more offense/defense oriented with a focus or evade. Because of Opportunist, you generally want to go after stressed targets or those that don't generally want to take a focus (not a long list, better to stress them). You move last most of the time, so you can tailor your planned offense to whether your target has a focus or evade token or not. Using boost or barrel roll to select targets you can get the bonus against is key.

When you fire, pick who you're shooting at. If they have a focus or evade, enjoy being able to perform hard 3s and K-turns the next turn without having to clear the PTL stress first. Much like Tycho, a Soontir that is capable of K-turning when you need him to will catch people off guard because who the gently caress isn't PTLing with him every single turn. If they don't have a focus or evade, use Opportunist, shoot five dice into an unprotected engine exhaust, and get a free focus to use immediately on that same attack. Now you have exactly the same maneuver options as if you had PTL Soontir, but you've probably inflicted a good deal more damage. You've probably also taken a bit, which is where the list trades off.

Right now, flying Sootir + Opportunist would probably work best with a stress generating list. A Decimator with Tactician and Mara Jade (for example) can do that job fairly well. Once Flechette Cannons come out, you could probably also use Defenders for it, crazy as that sounds. Consider the following list:

Soontir Fel (27)
Opportunist (4)

Onyx Squadron Pilot (32)
Flechette Cannon (2)

Onyx Squadron Pilot (32)
Flechette Cannon (2)

Total points: 99

Your Onyxes probably won't be any serious help against Phantoms, but that's true of most defenders ever, and the extra offense Soontir can generate will help with landing hits on the elusive buggers. Use the Flechette Cannons to pick out targets for Soontir - a pair of stresses makes for a guaranteed target next round, on top of doing a couple damage at decent range.

It's not like you're required to use the Flechette. They're there in order to give Soontir his Opportunist opening reliably, but once the fight is joined they don't need to keep plinking.

I don't see the flexibility though. Being able to boost AND barrel roll on the same turn is huge: see why Jake is so good even compared to Tycho's quite good ability. There are so many times when being able to do both is so crucial to arc-dodging and Soontir is just too fragile to be in a position where he doesn't have the ability to do both at the same time in order to get out of dodge. Another thing that you can't do is do a barrel roll/boost and then evade either: you always end up with one less token that you might need. Firing first is also a minus on this list, because your opponent will not have used up his focuses for firing.

And if you don't manage the opportunist shot, you are even in a worse position. If you face something of higher PS you are pretty screwed with PtL or Opportunist anyway, but PtL can be turned to the defensive if necessary. If you have an equal PS pilot, if you lose the initiative you are screwed in two ways: you move first (thus not being able to know if you need to barrel roll/boost and as well as that, since you shoot first your opponent is unlikely to have used his focus token (which he will have likely taken to prevent you from using Opportunist in the first place).

I do know that people get into a trap of having to PtL every single time, but I have had situations in which I didn't need to or knew I needed a specific maneuver next round, so I decided not to PtL. In the end, deciding not to PtL is the same as not using Opportunist, but at least with PtL I have the choice: with Opportunist, it might be that I never even get to make that choice: it's an inflexible strategy.

It just seems to be a strategy that is too reliant on either having other parts of your list putting stress on the enemy, or have your enemies not assign focus on his ships because of other reasons. PtL Soontir is entirely self-sufficient and doesn't have to rely on no one to make him work.

BBBBZ will almost always win against Decimator/Phantom because of the time limit. It doesn't have any way to actually kill a Phantom unless that player screws up, but it will kill the Decimator and then take too long to kill before time runs out. It's basically a gamesmanship list, but that's when you get when the game has weak tournament rules.
