Late to the mental illness chat, but I think the reason why so few mental illnesses are portrayed in manga and anime is because of the Japanese - and to a lesser extent, the rest of the world - stigma of mental illness. Apparently anti-depressants are a sign of "losing face", since you're supposed deal with depression yourself. There was even a whole documentary about mental illness in Japan.

I know as I read a non-fictional book about it here: http://www.amazon.com/Shutting-Out-Sun-Generation-Departures/dp/1400077796

Still doesn't make it go away unless you count that one manga series about the two NEET siblings who try to survive everyday life.

@Kuragehime: I like the latest chapter but I hope the manga-ka has a good idea to resolve the love "triangle" soon. I mean right now it's well at least someone admitted to liking Tsukimi in the last few volumes despite everything. Reminds me, has anyone watched the live action movie or is it still in production?

I did, well, technically I've put it On Hold but I plan to finish it later on before it ends too. I have to agreed as I've been to a few casinos as a kid and yes it's quite boring.

No stretching this time. Was Ran being able to get in contact with her mother but not her father supposed to be indicative that they were separated? Was this mentioned earlier and I'm just forgetting or maybe just reading too much into it? Either way sad times are probably a comin'.

Every time I read Kuragehime I have to wonder what exactly makes any of the nerd girl characters redeemable in any way. It's been years since this comic started coming out and they're only starting to change very very slightly.

The parts with the Amars feels like I'm reading an E/N thread.

I think it's the niche audience as mostly nerdy girls are ignored in popular culture/media. I mean I always thought Hermione would be a great FeMC of HP.

I have no problems with nerd characters, but these ones seldom changed at all during the story's 70+ chapters. It's really boring when your actions are pretty much limited to:

1. Freak out about normal people/apartment
2. Eat hot pot
3. Fangirl over the same set of things you've been fangirling over since chapter 1

I dunno that pretty much describes the last 20 years minimum for any given Goon, 70 chapters isn't so bad.

I imagine that's a pretty accurate depiction of that particular type of person.

I really like Higashimura's art and Kakukaku Shikajika, but I'm not a big fan of Kuragehime's characters/plot.

Maybe it's just that I happen to like Tall Girl/Short Guy dynamic, but I've been enjoying Fujiyama-san wa Shishunki lately. It's a bit cheescakey at times since the guy is a total horndog who can't stop ogling his girlfriend, but I think both main characters are likeable and active in a way that doesn't always happen in manga.

Hmm, alternatively, what if that premise is taken to a ridiculous extreme and the manga spans their entire life together? They date for a while and he is completely oblivious to it. She proposes to him and he doesn't hear her because a train goes by or something but he just nods his head rather than admit he didn't hear her. Then the wedding ceremony happens and he thinks it's just some assignment for her photography class. She uses his money to buy a house but he was terrible at math so doesn't understand why he's poor now and decides to move in with her as a roommate to save money. Every time they have sex he thinks it's just some kind of weird massage because he was absent from sex ed class for getting in fights. When they start having kids, he thinks they're just the neighbor's kids that his wife/roommate is babysitting. Whenever the kids call him "dad" he just thinks they don't get enough attention at home and are being overly familiar. Eventually, the manga ends in a nursing home when the wife dies and one of his friends says something like "sorry about your wife dying" and suddenly he realizes that they were in a relationship for the last 60 years and he never noticed.

The manga goes on well after the show and some incredibly crazy stuff happens, but it still never got a proper ending because the mangaka got very sick and stopped working on it. Apparently she's better now, but still hasn't announced any plans to finish the story which makes me very sad. Like, super sad. I really need to know what happens dammit!
