So, I just got myself a low-end Lumia 630, and I think I'm gonna go against the grain a bit here and say that I've been pleasantly surprised by how nice Windows Phone is. I simply adore the Metro interface, I feel it beats Android's and iOS' easily. Live tiles are quite an elegant solution. I got this phone mainly for texting, music playing and checking my e-mails once in a while and I don't have any major complaints. I think for something that is half the price of a Moto G (default low-end Android recommendation) and 1/8 (!) the cost of the cheapest iPhone 5s that's quite a feat. I have been using the free Xbox Music Pass trial and it's been serving me well.

The bad: It could load things faster, but I suppose that's because I'm running a cheap phone with 512 MB of RAM. Also the câmera on this thing is terrible, and the screen is ehhhh... acceptable. Made me kinda regret not getting a 930, but that is 3 times more expensive (R$300 vs R$1200).

The Awful app has been great so far too, Drastic Actions.

That's from comments on this article. A guy said something similar has been in Android for years. Whether or not it's the exact same feature doesn't really matter, but I can't fathom why someone who writes about tech for a living doesn't know or doesn't care about what's going on elsewhere. Surely that's the whole point of "analysing" this stuff?

There's a certain breed of tech "journalist" who writes about and concerns themselves exclusively with Microsoft. If it doesn't concern MS they simply don't care.

Because 'less apps' is not a selling point, and the finer point about not needing a million apps for basic stuff isn't easy to fit into a commercial, is my guess.

Two points.
1 They did push this in the WP7 (not 7.5) era.
2 A million lovely apps is not an issue on iOS or android most people get the definitive (and high quality) apps from the original sources (google, ms, twitter).

Most androids already have good third party apps installed anyway (twitter, Dropbox)

I'm looking at replacing my current Oppo Find 5 android phone with a windows one. I've been looking primarily at the Nokia 930, even though it's a bit thick dimensions wise.
What am I going to miss the most going from android, apart from the tight google integration? And the reverse of that, what am I going to be most thrilled about with a Windows phone?

Oh are we going back through the trash WP marketing? "The beta test is over" when the only way to have a good up to date experience on Window Phone is to literally run a beta preview :suicide:

e: ok to be fair that may have been Nokia marketing, but still.

One of the major defects with Harmony Music right now is that intermittently & unpredictably, background audio will pause when the screen turns off. At first I thought it was just low memory devices or battery saver, but it happens with higher end devices and when plugged in. One hour it'll work and then you'll go to play something and it'll pause as soon as the screen times out. Tap the screen back on and it starts playing again. Because it's unpredictable (and never happens in the VMs) I can't reliably reproduce it nor have I been able to inspect the app in the debugger while this is happening.

If any of yall wpdevs itc have any thoughts on this it'd be most appreciated.

I'm getting that headphone thing going on, and it looks to be corrosion on the exposed pads in the jack. Since it is cut into profile with the phone it collects moisture, grit, etc.

I'm going to try a 2.5mm swab (for optical connectors) with some deoxit.

That post actually sums up my experiences pretty good, although I'd hesitate to call IE mobile a good browser. Chrome on android / ios is certainly far ahead. For instance, if you have several tabs open, IE will just close the oldest one when it runs out of memory. And the text reflow on non-mobile sites is pretty bad, there's often a lot of scrolling back and forth.

My experiences (and I'm still a heavy android user) are practically the same. UC Browser normally does the job but sometimes I miss from android Opera and UC Browser (wich plays every drat web video around). The only huge reason to keep using an android phone was two driving apps, both oriented to Spain's speed radars (or whatever you call them) suddenly ran out of support and died so I decided to stick with Here Drive wich is miles better than Google maps for navigating, just that little touch of letting you download the maps and store them permanently on your phone is great. Quickplay Pro is a decent video player and an exelent music player. I have Harmony (thanks Factor Mystic) and while I never stream music away from wi-fi, I decided to upload to my OneDrive a selection of ambience music for those days I play tabletop games with friends.

I'm sure that if I had a 930 or 1520 the few instances where my 925 feels slow would go away and if Microsoft handles Windows 10 right, my next phone will be running it, just because I'm tired of fixing Samsung issues by rooting and flashing custom OS or fixing stuff myself, because I'm tired of android not having a proper camera app (Lumia camera and Camera360 Sight are awesome in comparison). And Cortana is just amazing even on alpha/beta depending on languages.

I had a Windows Phone 7, which was crappy enough to drive me to iOS, but I'm heading back to Windows at the end of the year because god drat do I love live tiles. The only essential app I can see missing is an equivalent to Sleep Cycle; there appear to be a couple, but they come with reviews saying they completely fake the results, so I may have to keep the iPhone with me for that at night.

I keep my 1520 in mobile mode and never have any problems with embedded Youtube videos, which are by far the most common I come across.

I think the only embedded video I've come across that didn't play was this one. I'm sure there are others, but it seems to be minor issue.

I wish my lumia 930 was capable of not playing videos. The Arseholes who designed the website for my city's newspaper decided it would be good to have Autoplaying embedded videos. Nearly every article has one and trying to get it to not play when you're browsing on your phone is a nightmare. Seriously, If it were up to me it would be a capital crime to create a webpage where video or sound played without you explicitly clicking on something to make it happen.

I actually removed a newspaper's site from my Favourites because every time I went there, I'd forgotten the auto-playing videos that hijack the audio on my phone, causing podcast / music to suddenly cut out.
