I don't really cover sports that often so covering the super bowl this week made me realize most sportswriters are humorless nerds with body odor. I don't know why I expected anything different after reading dumbshit articles like that over the years.

Also, yeah, media day was a total gangbang and it needed a bigger area. Marshawn's booth was a complete cluster because they put him in a small booth but everyone knows he only talks for 5 minutes so we just loving crush each other. My photog took like 3 boom poles to the head in the first couple minutes and almost got knocked off his stepladder. I told my correspondent to just stay out of it, wasnt worth it.

Agreed with all these points.

I will add this: if things outside of football are going to count towards the Hall then I think the NFL should really follow through on that and remove all members who broke whatever ethical restriction they put in place. No grandfathering in guys like LT.

Obviously that won't happen any time soon.

This seems like the point of view of a complete nitwit. So some player got a DUI or two on his way to being the greatest defensive tackle ever. Maybe he slapped his wife around once in there but it never got to be a big deal, or was totally swept under the rug.

Darren Sharper is a deplorable human being and whatever his accomplishments in this life, they mean nothing against the backdrop of actions.

Well, they don't, thus the bylaws

I actually don't mind that rule now that I think about it, because you'd have players essentially doing showy charity poo poo to try to win their way into the hall, you'd basically be pitting charity work against on-field stats and performances, like is two fewer Pro Bowl selections less than or greater than 10 more charity golf outings or whatever

Agreed with this too. At the end of the day I think the Hall of Fame should be treated like Time Magazine's person of the year award (but more seriously because this actually matters). You get in by leaving an indelible mark on the sport. That way it isn't just the all time greats allowed in (LT, OJ, Peyton) but also the guys who changed the sport forever, like Ray Guy and whoever invented the instant replay.

David Letterman opted not to try to generate any new information from Patriots coach Bill Belichick regarding the #DeflateGate scandal. Letterman nevertheless may have generated some new information from Belichick.

First, a little clarity about my opinions on the situation. Even though Letterman is a comedian, he hosts a talk show. Which is premised on guests talking. Typically about issues currently relevant to them.

Indeed, Letterman and Belichick talked about #DeflateGate. But Letterman’s comments and questions flowed from the idea that it’s all nonsense, a dead issue that never should have been an issue, and/or an outright fabrication hatched by the NFL team that plays in Letterman’s home state. This overlooks the fact that the NFL currently is investigating whether the Patriots tampered with the footballs.

It’s possible that one of Belichick’s responses accident made news regarding the pending investigation.

Said Belichick after Letterman suggested that the Colts deflated the football that linebacker D’Qwell Jackson intercepted, “We’re gonna bring you in to testify when we get the investigation next month.”

By using the phrase “when we get the investigation next month,” Belichick possibly was referring generally, and a bit inartfully, to the report of the Ted Wells investigation, which based on Wells’ prior statements reasonably can be expected to be released in March. It’s also possible that Belichick let the cat out of the bag about a hearing that will be held in March.

The league office offered no insight on the question of whether Belichick was saying that an actual hearing will happen next month.

“Don’t know what it means,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told PFT by email. “It’s a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.”

Which means that the wait for further news on the status of the investigation continues. With all leaks dried up since Super Sunday, it’s likely that there will be no further information about the investigation until the final report is issued.

My impression of him was that he was borderline HOF because of his ball hawking skills. I think the criticism of him with the Packers was that he was a lazy tackler in run support. You'd have a guy reach the 2nd level and Sharper would half assed dive at the guys feet leading with his shoulder, not even attempting to wrap the guy up.

At least with the Packers, I don't think he ever had any great signature plays, and most of what I remember was a bit infamous.

- Putting an unsuccessful hit on TO with the catch 2
- Putting an unsuccessful hit on FredEx on 4th and 26
- Getting hurt in 2002 on a pretty poor decision to return an INT out of the end zone. He missed the last regular season game and Wild Card game.
- Trying to run back a Hail Mary INT when leading by one score versus the Vikes. I think he scored, but it was called back due to 3 or 4 illegal blocks and personal fouls on the Packers.

Mike Florio posted:

Grigson has a bit of a history with the Pats

As the football-following world waits (and wait . . . and waits) for the Second Annual AFC East Ted Wells Report, there’s an interesting wrinkle regarding the genesis of the allegation that the Patriots were deflating footballs.

Last week, Colts G.M. Ryan Grigson admitted that he alerted the league of the team’s suspicions the week prior to the game, contradicting prior reports and explanations from the league that suggested the issue first came up during the AFC title game. The popular view had been that, unlike his predecessor Bill Polian, Grigson had no specific reason to be suspicious or resentful of the Patriots.

But maybe Grigson did. He arrived in Indy from Philadelphia, where Grigson worked for the Eagles during a Super Bowl XXXIX loss to New England. Three years earlier, Grigson worked for the Rams during a Super Bowl XXXVI loss to the Patriots.

So Grigson quite possibly believes the Patriots previously took a pair of Super Bowl rings from him with methods that may have been beyond the realm of the rules. Though no specific accusations ever were made about Super Bowl XXXIX, the win came during the same window in which former Panthers G.M. Marty Hurney has openly wondered whether a “culture of cheating” existed. As to Super Bowl XXXVI, many still believe that the Patriots videotaped the St. Louis walk-through practice prior to the game, even though the Boston Herald retracted the report with a front-page story not long after the story first emerged.

Throw in the fact that Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk and future Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner continue to have suspicions about that game, and it’s easy to wonder whether Grigson regards the Patriots as a team that took multiple Super Bowl rings from him.

None of that affects whether cheating occurred in this specific case. But it shows that NFL V.P. of game operations (and former Jets employee) Mike Kensil may not have been the only person with a specific bias against the Patriots, and a specific desire to catch them in the act.
