A whole lot of car stuff would be different if it were just starting today. Just look at the patent system. Every single vehicle would have a different control scheme to avoid licensing patents.

Just walked past this. While I love the Model S, I have been skeptical to the automated door handles.



One scenario is a crash, shorted electrics, a fire and no way for people outside to open the doors and save those within. Are more mild issue is a few degrees below freezing and the right rear handle stuck out with its light on, draining the battery.

Since it can phone home...

1) ..there should be all sorts of alert triggers which notifies the driver. Locked with open window, stuck door handle, haven't been charged in X days, etc etc.
2) ... I'll try sending the pic and GPS coords to Tesla support, see if they can remote in and shut it or alert the owner.

I am not good at posting in general, but I thought the problem was obvious. (not much at photography either) See the cone of light near the rear door handle? The gee-wiz proximity sensor door handle is stuck in the out position. It's been cold the past few days, I bet that is the root cause.

Oh and I did email Tesla support. Will be surprised if they answer, delighted if they care.

The battery pack can hurtle 4500+ pounds of car down the road for 150+ miles, it can probably run that door light until all that snow thaws in May.

Oh yeah, absolutely. But it's not like they included lovely door handles on purpose because the battery pack was so big. It's a neato-o thing that's supposed to be all wow, now it's all durrrr. For what it is worth, In my 4 or so years of being a Tesla owner their service has bent over backwards to completely resolve every issue I've had, minor or major. But I live in a major city where there is a dedicated service center so that may be a difference.

Yes, living a short drive from the factory means my experience may not be a good national metric, either. FWIW, I had my own door handle issues.

Hey volt goons, do any of you have problems with your charge door? It never freaking opens for me. It started about a year ago. Got it replaced under warranty and didn't get any better. You can hear the solenoid open but the door is stuck or something. Gets worse in the rain.

Mine sticks in the rain too, but is fine the rest of the time. The remote/electric charge door opener is cool, but was an idiotic inclusion, and poorly engineered. The '14s and on apparently went to a standard push-to-open door, like the fuel door.

I've seen some people have put white lithium grease on the latch post, and it has helped, but mine isn't bad enough for me to warrant screwing with it.

You could try this one too.

So I'm living in LA and have a 35 mile commute everyday on the 405. I'm dying to be able to use the carpool lane.

I know there's 2 kinds of stickers (green and white) and I'd prefer to get a green one, but my impression is that there's a waiting list for those and I might not even get one if I buy a Volt or something like that. Does anyone know if this is true? That will obviously change my car search.

I don't have experience with their Juicebox charger specifically, but I have used one of their 12 kW chargers before and it was a solid product. Quick response from engineering when I had any questions, and the unit seemed well built. It's a very different product, but I'd imagine support should be the same.

Well, if you're at all worried about range, don't be. That's less than half the range of a Leaf. Heck, even a Volt could do it without kicking on the engine.

Yeah, that's about the same round-trip distance as my commute, and in the Leaf I can do that three times without recharging in the summer, or twice (barely) in the winter.

Wow google results are really not up to date, I can't figure out for sure if there are currently any tax credits for installing a home charging station in the US. I guess there's a federal tax credit that was extended through 2013 that keeps popping up but it's not clear if it's still valid through this year.

Anyone know what, if any, federal tax credits or rebates exist, or knows where a current list of local ones are?

Plug in your state and it will show you applicable charger credits. In my state there is a rebate up to $3k for a L2 charger. Keep in mind some links on this Tesla site are outdated and dead. :(

Ugh looks like there really isn't anything federally (according to this, anyway) and my locality doesn't really have anything enticing. :(

There are places in the area that offer to install your charger for $500, and it looks like outdoor home chargers run as low as $450, so now all I need is to somehow magically come up with about $1,000 after buying a house :signings:

White stickers are for purely electric vehicles (Telsa Model S, Nissan Leaf, BMW i3, etc), hydrogen (Clarity), or compressed natural gas (Civic). There is no limit to the number of white stickers that are issued per year.

The green stickers are for plug-in hybrid electrics (Volt, Prius Plug-in, BMW i3 + REX). There is a limit as to how many stickers are issued. Last year (2014), they ran out of stickers in April, and issued an additional 10k sometime in the middle of the summer. They added another 15k at the top of this year, but those will probably dry up by April.

It's easiest to find a vehicle that already has a sticker, and dealerships used to be able to pre-register vehicles for stickers. But now, the DMV has blocked that from happening.

Same, except Volt, and my fault. I've had a Ford Focus for 2 weeks, and while a reasonably nice car, I'm growing frustrated with the way the transmission shifts and hesitates. I want all my torques now, please. I've also spent more money on gas in the last 2 weeks than did for gas/electricity the last 2 months.

Never figured i would post in the EV thread, but i picked up my P85D today. The car is freaking unreal to drive. The way EVs are taxed and excempted from stuff in Norway makes it a really good deal aswell. one could argue i would get the same benefits from a Nissan Leaf, but...there is no Insane mode toggle in a Leaf, is there?

I just can´t wait until i can put the summer-tires on and really get to know the car. I just wish they could ha spent a dollar more on the loving sun visors.

I have tried it on wet salty roads, but there is no snow in Bergen atm. i am considering using the tesla when we visit my sister in eastern Norway for easter. Really enjoying the car. And having the ability to charge it fast at both work and at home. i am using the dual chargers at home and i use the 230/32amp at work.
I am trying to find a way to replicate supercharging at work, the charging stations we use to charge the buses at work are capable of the output but i want to check that i am not frying the battery og loosing warranty.

My current commute is pretty short, 36km round trip. But when i get better from this cancer poo poo, i will mix between commuting to my shop and the firehouse. the firehouse is a 62km round trip. Currently my most used commute will be to the hospital for radiation, and that is a 75km round trip. EVs are also excempt from paying tolls and have free parking. this sums up to about 35 bucks three times a week.

Seriously I miss it so much whenever I'm driving pretty much any other car, and noticeably so above and beyond that ICE cars feel like poo poo to me now in general

Wow, another Bergoon. I work for Tide, but not at a garage that deals with trolley buses. We are gearing up to handle the new extra long duo buses tho. But we do have a fleet of various electrical vechiles for internal transport and we have a test station for a mercedes full electrical bus, since the bus is back in Germany i use this position to charge my car.

i do, however think that there would be some angry hikers if i tried to drive up fløiensvingene or munkebotn

Seattle's overhead trolley buses are over 30 years old, but they're finally getting new ones. I guess they put some of the propulsion systems into newer coaches a while back but something from 1979 just is too much to keep up.

New ones will have 3 miles of off-grid capability for going around accidents and construction and yay, A/C. We have the second largest system in the U.S. behind San Francisco. I'm glad we didn't switch to diesel. I think I read the electric buses are better at climbing the steep grades, too (which makes sense in SF also).

I don't know if they'll be as quiet as that one though, dang.
