I acknowledge the triumph of the latter, it just loses my interest once they get to the mall. With Argento's Zombie, my interest is sustained throughout.

That Crimson Peak trailer looks great! But I worry that the film's most obvious strength (its atmosphere) is going to be directly at odds with the CGI's efforts to yank me out of the film. It was a pretty big surprise to see straight up ghosts in the trailer, you'd expect them to keep that in reserve.

I won't say much about it, and you should watch it knowing as little as possible about it ahead of time. It's just great. Seconding that this was pretty good, and definitely benefits from going in cold. The only thing I might warn people about is that it's not actually a horror movie. It is a great crime thriller, though. (Spoiled just in case.)

So will the rest of the Friday the 13th movies ever come out on blu? It's been two years since the box set, and it's still pricey as gently caress. Are the DVD releases decent-looking? After the Nightmare on Elm Street blus, I kind of like having reference-level copies of really trashy looking poo poo.

I saw What We Do in the Shadows last night, and I highly recommend it highly if you can see it. It's a mockumentary that revolves around four vampires sharing a house in New Zealand. It's hilarious, and mostly succeeds because it's not afraid to be corny or disturbing. The effects are impressive for being a Kickstarted comedy. The only flaw is that it reaches too much for a climax after being mostly plotless. It ends up sabotaging one of its better running gags in the process. Still, I feel like I would have been obsessed with this movie if I was fourteen.

There are a few slashers where the killer is a woman but its treated as a last minute twist, so the rest of the movie leading up to it doesn't really make use of the idea of a female slasher. The most obvious one is Friday the 13th, but one of the Scream sequels did that as well.

I thought the ones they had on Netflix looked good, but I'm not sure how many of those were in HD. Friday 2 looked just fine though I will say that those movies are by and large a lot more flatter looking that the Nightmares.

I'm having a really miserable winter and I need to shock myself out of complacency, so I'm looking for particularly extreme examples of disturbing films. The kind of movies where, after you see them, you're hoping that whoever made or liked them is locked up someplace. My frame of reference would be something like A Serbian Film or Salo or the tail end of Megan Is Missing, although your examples don't have to be sexual (or good, for that matter), they can just be insanely bleak or violent or whatever else makes me feel dirty afterwards. Think the kind of movie that exists inside another movie which is trying to make a ham-handed point about the depravity of mankind. No real-life snuff films.

There's Blood Widow, which is a pretty straight slasher whose only real gimmick is that that the killer is a woman. It's really the epitome of a "made it in my backyard over a weekend" movie, and I couldn't get through it. The only thing I liked was the costume for the killer, which was a sort homemade-ninja gear and a white porcelain mask. The other one that comes to mind is WΔZ, which also goes under the terrible title of The Killing Gene. The bare-bones premise is that it's the same setup as Saw, but with a woman as the Jigsaw figure, but according to its fans it's really more of a response to Saw and a reworking of some of its themes. Hell of a cast too; Stellan Skarsgard, Tom Hardy, and Selma Blair as the killer.

Also the movie got retitled "The Killing Gene" because everyone kept calling it "Waz".

Africa Addio is just miserable. So is the rape-porn feature Forced Entry. EDIT: Not the Lizzy Borden remake, but the original 1970s film. And not the R-rated slasher remake of it, but the original legit porn version of it. EDIT 2: Actually, just thinking about how many versions of a single rape-porn slasher movie there are is making me miserable.

Something slightly relevant, the comic 'The Auteur' deals with a dude trying to make a 'President's Day' horror movie. Unsure if Reagan is involved, but I do know drugs, murderers, bodacious booties (plot point, fyi), actual murder, bleeding from your pores, the justice system, and hollywood is involved. It kinda dips it's toes in horror from time to time, but it has more DNA shared with skateboard decks and indie comix than actual horror movies. Still, I imagine plenty of people here would enjoy.

It doesn't connote the sense of quasi-realism of a Linklater film, the staging and lighting just look flat and boring. Also, the acting looks pretty loving bad.
