OldMemes posted:No, even 2000 years ago, when people died they normally stayed dead. The point of Jesus is that its literally God, creator of the Universe, dying for people's sins. When humans started doing things wrong, God could have just done "oh well", removed the Earth from existence and just started evolving another intelligent race to work with. Instead, God - remember, all powerful creator of the Universe, name above all names, the boss - takes off his authority, comes to Earth as a human, is brutally tortured to death while being abandoned and mocked by his people and his friends, then came back to life, just so he could save humanity from sin. During the passion, the aspect of God that was in Jesus was completely cut off from the aspect of God that was in Heaven (yeah, that's the complex part), so even though he knew that he would be ressurected like the Scriptures predicted, he still had to deal with all the emotions and fears and pain of being tortured. This is a few pages back but I just wanted to say this description of it struck me as really profound and fascinating and I hadn't really seen it described like this before (and I went to Catholic schools for 12 years). I feel like I'm going to mull this over a few times in my mind and add it to my spiritual repertoire, so thank you very kindly for that

What is the point of punching yourself in the Dick to forgive others? Its not like being human and getting the poo poo kicked out of you would even make an entity that's supposed to be omniscient 'learn' something. .... but then if you start trying to find all the plot holes in the bible, you're in for a long trip.

Generally no one really talked politics in my unit anyway, but there was a decent spectrum of opinion regarding the war. All political chat was done on our own time though, no one brought it to work. But it was Texas so there was huge amounts of racism, like I heard lynching jokes when Obama got elected. Also obviously tons of homophobia since it was 2004. There was this one pretty left-wing sergeant who really hated Bush and Cheney. Cool guy at the time, cooler in retrospect once I realized that he was correct about everything.
