Maybe it was all a setup by Stark to test Peggy to see if she's cut out to be the head of the eventual SHIELD, but it all went wrong when an actual evil shadowy organization showed up and started doing things.

There's been enough hints that the "obvious" story is that the Battle of Finael was a test run for a new type of super soldier after Cap died. Things went very, very wrong - and Stark found out and refused to work with the government. They label him a traitor and off we go.

Hell, I wouldn't even be shocked to find out that Dottie stole Stark's inventory off of american orders.

The ABC site says there is. Episode name SNAFU, which seems highly unladylike to say.

Insinuating that I am too young or too uneducated to understand the deep complexities of a show about sci-fi super weapons from WW2 is kind of dumb though, especially when you don't know how old I am and I don't know how old you are (not that it actually matters in any way.)

Commies were kind of a big deal up till relatively recently, man. It's not an reasonable thing to assume in a period piece, even a silly sci-fi one. It's like, you know, assuming females are the ones who bring hu-mon young to term, internally even! Or fire = bad.

I guess I am just not seeing why Leviathan is being equated with " plain old commies" given the existence of HYDRA, their central role in this universe, and the fact that Nazism was more a means to an end, and not a core principle of their ultimate mission. I don't understand why "Commies = The Bad Guys, E-Z" is somehow "good enough" from a story telling perspective, when the show is kind of A) avoiding a lot of red scare lingo and talk, B) setting up things other than "Commies!" as the possible bad guys, and C) exists in a world where the ultimate bad guys weren't even plain ol' Nazis in the traditional, Hollywood sense (they have their own name, emblem, and don't refer to themselves as Nazis or even really refer to the party in anyway.)

It was/is translating to the screen. You just couldn't see it for some reason. Why? I don't know, maybe personal experience, but it was very clear to me.

I don't know man this show is as weighty as a cinnamon roll and Toasty's explanation sounds as good as any to me. A bit of a disappointment, really.

Basically you could swap Leviathan for HYDRA at this point in the story and other than the fact that they base they raided was in Soviet territory, nothing substantial to the story changes even remotely. I guess it kind of messes with Red Room if you really want Red Room to be directly tied to Black Widow, but you could hand wave it away by saying the Soviets found out about HYDRA's Red Room program and adopted it, creating the Black Widow program.

That's why bringing up the whole Cold War era tension thing is pointless. Because with regards to the actual story we are watching, the bad guys could have just as easily been HYDRA, completely torpedoing that whole line of thinking, since we are no longer dealing with the USSR at that point.

It would also make AC fit better with the current goings on in AoS. But that isn't really important.

I hope today's ep finally fully explains Leviathan's deal, so that they can be defined properly within the story's world.
