Dunno the specifics, but I think it's related to this: http://www.zdnet.com/article/eu-plans-to-pass-common-phone-charger-law-et-tu-apple/ It's about a new law that will go into effect that involves, amongst other things, the requirement that all mobile phones use the same type of charging equipment, based on Micro USB. Which most phones have anyway. Makes sense to me, I have loads of Micro USB chargers and cables laying around already. Apple refused to comply, because being contrarian is one of their selling points. Still odd though, Nintendo's charger is not based on Micro USB. But if you can improve your margins slightly by selling chargers separately and blame it on regulation, why not?

Wandle Cax posted:What is the specific law and what electronics does it apply to? http://www.europarl.europa.eu/sides...fEN&language=EN It's the law that standardises chargers to the micro-USB format which the 3DS doesn't use. Nintendo can get away with this because selling a seperate charger makes it an accessory so it doesn't matter, or something. I don't actually think the law has been passed yet - and even once it has it's up to national governments to pass it as well - so really they're just using it as an excuse to make more money. It might not even apply to the 3DS. Blaming the EU for ridiculous bureaucracy is always fun but it's quite a stretch in this case.

I'd get basically nothing if I trade my 2DS without the charger, but if I trade it in with the charger I'd need to buy a new charger and the cost of the charger would eat the trade-in price so what's the point I'll just still with the 2DS, whatever.

Some will trade in an old DS but others will go "can you believe GameStop wouldn't let me stand in the store and do a system transfer? How dare they!?" And keep the old one. Surely these people have a charger sitting around. Hell I have three and only owns a 3DS and a 3DSxl. I'm not sure where the third came from because I haven't bought any. It really isn't as big a deal as goons are making it out to be.

Counterpoint: There's currently approximately six mobiles in the house at the moment, plus at least twice that in mobiles that got lost or destroyed. We know the location of three chargers. (E: Obviously, we got a charger with each new phone) I'd prefer to get a brand new charger with every handheld, thank-you-very-much, because I'm inevitably going to lose it.

split the difference, no charger in the box but you can get one for free when you buy the handheld if you need one. Done.

Yeah, one will usually have at least a couple options for microUSB. The idea of "ask for a free charger if you need a charger" is probably the best option, even if some assholes will still ask for a charger if they have a half dozen anyway.

Eh, I had a lot of friends in IT whom were all "working" on y2k stuff and to a man they all seemed to agree that 1) They didn't think anything would happen but 2) if it did, no amount of "fixes" would catch everything, so most of them slacked off like mad. I took the precaution of pulling my vast fortune out of the bank and investing it in more liquid assets, namely weed, lsd, coke, and an old Russian milsurp pistol.
