As far as I know not including the charger is some bullshit that only happens in Japan because they are used to being hosed. Nintendo is just testing if they can get away with it in the US.

Well I bought one in Sweden and it didn't come with one, but all the other electronics requiring a charger comes with one so it's not against any EU laws to pack a charger with a device so I don't understand what the gently caress?

It's pretty much to save money, that's why nintendo isn't packing chargers with them, it's not due to some EU law.

Both of my DSes and my 3DS were/are all Japanese and every one of them came with power cables.

I'd add to this that it's not just saving the cost of a charger - It lets them have a smaller box which costs less to transport.

Dunno the specifics, but I think it's related to this: http://www.zdnet.com/article/eu-plans-to-pass-common-phone-charger-law-et-tu-apple/

It's about a new law that will go into effect that involves, amongst other things, the requirement that all mobile phones use the same type of charging equipment, based on Micro USB. Which most phones have anyway. Makes sense to me, I have loads of Micro USB chargers and cables laying around already.

Apple refused to comply, because being contrarian is one of their selling points.

Still odd though, Nintendo's charger is not based on Micro USB. But if you can improve your margins slightly by selling chargers separately and blame it on regulation, why not? :downs:

It's the law that standardises chargers to the micro-USB format which the 3DS doesn't use. Nintendo can get away with this because selling a seperate charger makes it an accessory so it doesn't matter, or something.

I don't actually think the law has been passed yet - and even once it has it's up to national governments to pass it as well - so really they're just using it as an excuse to make more money. It might not even apply to the 3DS.

Blaming the EU for ridiculous bureaucracy is always fun but it's quite a stretch in this case.

I'd get basically nothing if I trade my 2DS without the charger, but if I trade it in with the charger I'd need to buy a new charger and the cost of the charger would eat the trade-in price so what's the point I'll just still with the 2DS, whatever.

Nintendo doesn't want you trading in your things is the point. Just keep your 2ds and get those sweet sweet street passes.

Because it's not a cell phone which is what that article is talking about. And because this doesn't have to enter into law in any EU country until 2016. And because phone makers have until 2017 to change their chargers. But really, because the 3DS *isn't a cell phone*.

If the 3DS thread is any indication all Nintendo has to do is put a pretty picture on a 3DS and goons will rush out to buy it. Some will trade in an old DS but others will go "can you believe GameStop wouldn't let me stand in the store and do a system transfer? How dare they!?" And keep the old one. Surely these people have a charger sitting around. Hell I have three and only owns a 3DS and a 3DSxl. I'm not sure where the third came from because I haven't bought any. It really isn't as big a deal as goons are making it out to be.

Counterpoint: There's currently approximately six mobiles in the house at the moment, plus at least twice that in mobiles that got lost or destroyed.
We know the location of three chargers. (E: Obviously, we got a charger with each new phone)

I'd prefer to get a brand new charger with every handheld, thank-you-very-much, because I'm inevitably going to lose it.

You're right I have four or five microusb chargers in my room, one in my car, two at work and I don't even know how many I've lost. The things I have that charge from microusb are my phone, tablet, and the ps4 controllers. It's far more realistic in the world of microusb to have at least two per working device.

Yeah, one will usually have at least a couple options for microUSB. The idea of "ask for a free charger if you need a charger" is probably the best option, even if some assholes will still ask for a charger if they have a half dozen anyway.

No joke tons of people were losing their minds over Y2K and the instant the clocks turned over the news were interviewing Australians about whether or not their computers went down.
