I mean obviously people are free to have their own opinions but I genuinely don't understand how someone could like this show and *not* like those two episodes

They both just seemed off to me. And the Johnny Karate episode minus the commercials was just a waste of time. I didn't laugh once. I guess I just like Andy in small amounts. Wait, I did like it when Ben was looking at his hands after being knighted.

It was probably influenced by knowing the title of the next episode and all the jokes in this thread about which characters would be killed off, but The Johnny Karate episode had a very strange vibe that reminded me of the Scrubs episode where they switched to multi-camera/sitcom format. I was on edge at a number of points, especially the shots of April and the mentions of "Andy Dwyer's Final Goodbye," that they were about to reveal the whole thing to be Andy in a coma, or some other incredibly dark route. Just a stray observation really, not a complaint. People who haven't enjoyed this season are loving wrong.

As someone with a 2-year-old who watches way too much children's programming than I'd like these days, I can honestly say that Johnny Karate is in the upper 10% in that genre, even if you take out the inside jokes. The format of 'Build Something/Learn Something/Karate Chop Something/Try Something New/Be Nice To Someone' is amazing and I wish more kids programming was like that.

If Chris Pratt had no future after p&r in another universe id be 100 percent cool with a Johnny karate show.

Johnny Karate was a fun, weird deviation from the series norm justified by the fact that it's their last season and why not play around. Frasier had a couple of episodes like that in its final year- one where everyone was having weird dreams that ended with a musical number, and another that was a series of flashbacks to past years (not a clip show but new scenes set during those seasons).

I feel you, I'm not really enjoying this last season too much. It just doesn't feel like the show. I think I'll like the episodes better once it's all done and they just get shuffled into my eternal rewatch cycle though. I might not have minded a wacky fanservice episode once in a while all along, but an entire season of it isn't doing it for me.

I think the Johnny Karate episode was the worst of the series for me, probably. The commercials were all good, but the format didn't really lend itself to particularly good jokes otherwise. The second episode made up for it, though, so I can forgive them for going out on a limb with a final-season episode. It's no Queen of Jordan, that's for sure.

If you haven't done it, the Mouserat retrospective at http://thejohnnykaratesuperawesomemusicalexplosion.com/ is pretty funny but the very long list of previous names for the band is mildly (or at least filled with things that would have gotten back lots of censor notes if broadcast). Also, all of the commercials are there.

Andy's show is really everything you want in a kids show. It has such a positive message and Andy's childlike nature makes it entertaining. I hope once he goes to DC he gets a national show.

The only thing good about the Johnny Karate episode was that they went all in with it. It didn't make for a great episode of P&R but I still respect it. The worst part was April's arc that episode. I was so bored of her unhappy in Pawnee poo poo this season and then this episode she starts to be unhappy with her decision to move. Glad Andy nipped it in the bud quickly.

So I think there's a fairly simple way to determine if someone would like the Johnny Karate episode (I think it may have been the absolute best of the series) or not. Ask them how much they enjoyed Community. It was absolutely an episode that Community would have tried and I thought it was pretty brilliant. I would not be surprised to learn that Dan Harmon had been consulted for how to pull it off. The rest of the people that didn't like it, I'll just chalk up to being goons. I also thought 2 funerals was very meh. Having A, B, and C plots caused each of them to feel rushed and pretty silly. The mayoral search was a good way to throw in some last minute cameos of townsfolk, and having such a scattered, meh episode turn out to be Garry's farewell episode all along was actually appropriate for the character. But I can't tell which plot was supposed to be dominant. Tom Haverford's proposal felt like A-plot material, with C-plot execution. While Ron's seemed like it had A-plot billing with side-bar content. I would find that a shame if that episode was intended to be farewells to all of Ron, Tom, and Garry. 2 episodes left. (Sorry for any overuse of spoiler. Didn't want to offend anyone as a newcomer to the thread.)

I don't know, I really like Community but the gimmick in the Johnny Karate episode just didn't really click with me. It was worth it for Ben being knighted, though.

I was thinking of the Office episode, "Threat Level Midnight", where they're watching the terrible spy movie Michael wrote and got everybody to act in.

John Cena, Verizon-Exxon-Chipotle being one of the 8 companies in America, the Paunch Burger commercial, and the nerdy kid being sad were all amazing. The plot didn't do anything for me, but had enough funny bits to work.

Yeah I'm the other direction. I'm not a fan of Community, but I loved the Johnny Karate episode. It helped that we got like GLIMPSES of a Burt Macklin show. I loved the Threat Level Midnight episode, so I loved what they did here. I feel like the April sublot kind of needed to be addressed, but the format of the episode made it so it didn't work super well. The audience knew that Andy is happy just being with April
