Serious Frolicking posted:For actually working as a cook Megumi probably has the best talent. Part of it comes from Japan's cooking apprenticeship stuff I think. There, it's possible to walk into certain privately owned restaurants to learn and take over the techniques and storefront of a restaurant from the headchef

My comment saying Hishoko was put on a "bus to nowhere" looks a lot sillier given that she reappears in the chapter that was just released as the main sidekick for the upcoming arc.

I think Souma will get to know literally everyone around Erina before he gets to her. Also this arc is already shaping up to be interesting!

A family restaurant is basically the ideal setting for Soma, so chances are pretty good he'll be helping secretary girl more than the other way around, yeah.

I'm guessing the Hishouko pun is kind of lost here, hence him calling her "Secretary Arato."

I spent the last week reading through this series due to a recommendation and although I thought I wouldn't be able to get into the premise it turned out to be really good. It took me a while to get into it though, the first ten chapters or so were kind of weak but once the Polaris dorm was introduced it started to become pretty fantastic. It looks like I picked a good time to finish reading it as well because the Autumn Tournament was exhausting enough reading it all at once I can't imagine how it would've been reading it week-to-week. Also, Megumi is the best character and probably one of the best Shonen heroines ever, especially of the character archetype she follows. On another note i'm pretty surprised and kind of excited to see secretary girl getting what seems to be a leading role in this next mini-arc. Since the Autumn qualifiers I thought she had potential as a character, though the more she gets defined outside of being Erina's secretary the more Erina loses the only thing about her that isn't the most generic traits of a Tsundere Ice Queen.

The running joke in this thread is that Erina has been constantly mentioned as the absolute greatest cook of her era, but does nothing but stomp around and get mad and Souma for his success and try to get him kicked out/defeated. They're really playing up the Elite 10 as a mix of vindictive assholes (blond slicked back hair guy and Erina) and just regular people (nudist chef) but they've never cooked so it's not even clear what the point to them is other then being final boss

Nudist chef has cooked. He beat Soma and then Smoke guy asked him why he wasn't using his full power. It's pretty clear at this point the the Elite Ten are just meant to be the final bosses, the best of the best, and introducing a few of them early is actually a pretty good idea to build anticipation and whatever. The problem is that Erina keeps getting pushed as an incredibly important character, as a more important part of the series than just simply being a final boss even though she hasn't done poo poo, barely appears and is extremely boring. Her secretary has gotten more focus and development, she even had a rival to battle in the Tournament, while Erina had nothing to do in that arc which lasted half the entire series. And this honestly wouldn't be too bad on its own, it's decent setup for her as an opponent in the future, but it's pretty bad writing for someone whom supplementary material (not the manga itself since she doesn't do anything) portrays as the main heroine or rival. It's just really confusing.

Because of that she's, well, boring. Yeah, the last chapter of the tournament arc made where they're going with her character more apparent and make more sense, and it's good setup in the longrun. I just mainly find it confusing that in promotional materials and in a lot of the chapters she's kind of portrayed as the main rival or heroine even though the arc they seem to be going for with her seems to need her to be out of the spotlight which to me is a strange way to write a character that seems to be thought of as like one of the secondary protagonists.

To this manga's credit, it could have gone whole-harem by having a different girl chef every chapter who specializes in a type of cuisine who all get defeated by Souma and they swoon over him (I honestly thought it would go that way when Nikumi was introduced...)

Nikumi kind of feels like a relic of when the manga was still relying really heavy on fanservice to get attention.

I don't think it ever needed heavy fanservice to get attention, it's just the artist that likes drawing that stuff. Dude used to be a porn artist, after all.

It's a poo poo job where you work usually every weekend and most holidays and most customers treat you like you're dirt. Anyway, cooking manga! That is a foreboding last panel.
