Mainly because I can imagine "Oh don't worry just work a year and pay off the debt and then try again for grad school" will probably lead to me being 40 and still working as an insulator and resisting the urge every day to jump off the high roofs they want to send me in. Muir has previously done the exact same thing (minus the acknowledgment of what he was doing) in some of his strips involving auto repair, and he was mocked for it in this thread. First Stilton Jarlsberg makes a joke that isn't racist or homophobic, and kind of gets a chuckle out of me...
