This came up on the uk owners club, its cool in some ways but god does it look shonky as hell. They seriously had to hack the front up to run double wishbones.

It is shonky as hell. The race version had terrible results (DNF first Le Mans/Second to last second attempt), and it looks like it needs another 10k worth of work in paint, tires, and rust restoration.

It is really amusing that they thought they could jam a V8 into a MR2 and have it compete with McLaren F1s.

The MCV8R was really weird. The odd thing is that the normal SW20 was pretty successful in Super GT, I'm unsure of what exactly SARD was trying to achieve here.

1994 MR2 Turbo - Rev 3 Tintop

quote:

A change of plans means I have decided to put my MR2 Turbo up for sale and I would much rather sell it as a complete car than break the parts.
I live in Newbury, West Berkshire
I am looking for £3,250, this is a third car / weekend car so I am in no rush to sell. This is a very good unmolested example, with a few choice mods, but nothing that takes it too far from standard.
1994 Revision 3, Astral Black Turbo
101,000 Miles
ARC air intake
Lots and lots of paperwork.
In my ownership - September 13 - Full service including:
All ignition components replaced from Battery to plugs
New Cambelt
New Alternator Belt
New Water pump
Carbotech XP8 pads all round
New rear disks
Momo steering wheel
R-Spec boost gauge in dash
New intercooler
New radiator
TRD Shortshift kit and gear knob
In the past year:
Cusco front and rear braces
Apexi N1 Coilovers - Front camber adjustable - - Dino wheel alignment settings when fitted
New air-con compressor and aux belts
TRD 22mm front and rear ARB's
Rogue revision 6 twin Spal fans in engine lid
Serviced and MOT'd in September 14.
And within the past few weeks brand new Toyo Proxy R1's all round and brand new full BERK exhaust including de-cat pipe
To go with the car but not fitted:
Harness belts and harness bar
Cancer bars
Race exhaust manifold
Spare battery
Bad points:
Usual drivers seat bolster wear and bonnet and drivers wing paint is now a little scratched and chipped.

TOYOTA MR2 (MK3) ROADSTER 2ZZ-GE 190bhp Engine conversion

quote:

2004 54 plate MR2 Roadster fitted with a Toyota Corolla T-Sport 190bhp 2ZZ-GE engine. It's done 75k with service history, has all 3 keys, 1 previous owner. 9 months MOT. The car is in very good condition, no rips or tears in the roof. It has Yokohama's tyres on the front, Bridgestones on the back. Black leather interior in very good condition.
The 2ZZ-GE swap is a perfect match to the MR2 chassis. It gives the car the straight line performance to match the excellent handling. It turns it into the car it should have been from the factory.
I converted this car myself, have done a few 2ZZ swaps in the past. I used a 2002 Corolla T Sport engine and gearbox (85k). I've installed the new style upgraded lift bolts. It runs a Celica 190 ECU (with 2 matching transponders. both keys work perfectly). It has a stainless steel exhaust manifold that's designed for this engine conversion. The Corolla gearbox has been fitted with the MR2 LSD and the longer ratio 6th gear. This makes a huge difference on the motorway, 70mph is around 3,200rpm now. Makes a big difference to economy. It's fitted with a custom made induction kit that is routed behind the battery by the side scoop. It sounds nice and quiet when driving it normally but when you hit lift it sounds fantastic.

I don't have a garage, I don't have many tools, and I don't really know poo poo about working on cars. I should probably stop looking for my next car on pistonheads. And yet...

Just how insane would I have to be to buy something like this? And, what the gently caress are cancer bars?

I'm always curious how these projects start. I know most these things come about from wrecked/stripped out cars that they had no use for anymore and were too lazy to get rid of. But what exactly made this guy think that he was capable of building a car chassis out of what looks like his old bed frame.

Obviously have a mechanic check out whatever you buy but those both seem like pretty good choices.

The 2nd Gen looks like a good deal but I don't really know how those fare in the UK weather. A bone stock one probably would be better.

I can't think of any reason a 3rd gen MR2 would be a bad idea or unreliable. That may be an engine swap but it's a common swap and a reliable platform.

The 1st car will ride like utter poo poo on our roads with that coilover/arb setup and there are a fair few questionable modifications. New intercooler and radiator usualy means lovely ebay ones for both, same goes for his 'race manifold' I'm not sure why hes running xp8 pads on the street either, unless he tracks the thing. I bet its also got 21 year old suspension bushes and engine mounts which will need doing.
Cancer bars are just a stupid term for these tiny brace bars at the bottom of the engine bay, they are meant to help with chassis rigidity but i've removed them and noticed gently caress all difference. You can buy new ones from toyota.

Also you'd need to check for rust on the doors and worse the rear sills, which if showing any signs of exterior corrosion usualy mean the thing is rotting from the inside.

The 2zz roadster looks nice and should be fairly easy to look after if the swap has been done well, I had a go in one and it was lots of fun. With an engine swap you will be limited to a few select insurers like a-plan or sky who do specialist insurance for modified cars and imports though, most normal car insurance companies wont touch it. Although this also goes for the mkii tbh.

As someone who cant stop sperging about mr2s I realy wouldnt recomend either to someone with not much knowledge about these cars.

I'd say start with finding a good condition non turbo mkii, as there is much less to go wrong and are much easier to work on than a turbo car or one with an engine swap.

Edit: whereabouts in the uk are you?

Will sell for cash if over book value only or I'll keep it.

That picture was taken spring 2014 and now has all 4 new factory sized tires.

I rarely see these any more here in Ohio and when I do they are rusted out. A quick googling tells me 'book value' is around 3,500. If I had the money I would be tempted to check this out

Maybe something like a zeitronix wideband/gauge. 12k is actually pretty reasonable for that. I've seen worse swaps listed for more. Recently one for 19k.

Also lol at the "acting as a mechanical lsd" for the controllerless center diff. Most likely it's fully open without a controller (unless he/she wired it in for 100% lock, which would be much worst)

Fully unlocked centre diff would just make it act almost like a rwd car when you lose traction, and with that supposed power level, a properly functioning center diff would be a really nice thing to have. Although it's a fairly easy fix, and the rest of the car looks pretty good, as does the price.
