As DR said, the F-35 has 2 internal bays, with room for a 2000lb class bomb and AIM-120 in each. Block 5 is supposed to allow 2 more AMRAAMs in place of each bomb if the USAF so chooses. The also have 6(IIRC) external hardpoints for when they are Should be possible with some finagling, given the space inside: Mazz fucked around with this message at 00:13 on Feb 19, 2015 |

OhYeah posted:What I want to read now is a neutral and critical overview of the F-35 project at the current stage, plus predictions for the future and will it be able to assert its role among the competition such as Typhoons, Rafaeles, SU-35s, PAK-FAs and whatever that Chinese knock-off was called. I posted (what I think is) a pretty good run-down of the current situation in the thread in AI, cross-posted it a couple pages back in this thread. Predictions aren't really worth much because anyone who truly knows what the F-35 is capable of (and what those other systems are capable of) isn't going to be talking about it on the Something Awful forums (or anywhere else on the internet) and anyway that's kind of missing the point.

I didn't realize this, but apparently Russia made another version of the BMPT that was never produced. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qk_k9kFbYRs I just got to ask, what is the point of it when you can outfit newer IFVs to do the same role, with similar level of protection, and probably cheaper to boot?

Because the level of protection isn't remotely similar unless the APC is built on a specific, armored shell, which IIRC narrows down that list to to the Marder 2/Puma or the Namer. The Bradley/BMPs of the world are nowhere near the protection of even a T-72.

But I was under the impression it doesn't have the same level of armor protection as a T-72 though, as they decided to built it on a much lighter frame with much more dependence on reactive armor inserts. If that's not the case then nevermind. Back Hack fucked around with this message at 07:40 on Feb 19, 2015 |

Also, someone has to be keeping track of the records for longest time spent at AMARG before flying again. I think one of NASA's WB-57s was pulled out of celebrity row after a few decades in storage.

So you could use it for air-to-air missions as well, 6 internal AMRAAM Ds sounds pretty bad-rear end especially since the stealth factor is not compromised and you have pretty good combat radius as well. EDIT: But wait, currently it is possible to replace the 2000lbs bomb with only one AMRAAM instead of two? OhYeah fucked around with this message at 14:18 on Feb 19, 2015 |

Last news about it were the Luftwaffe complaining about shoddy work (875 flaws found in their first model) and the Armée de l'Air finding the side doors too awkward for paratroopers to use them and doubting it could safely refuel choppers. Also, delays expected on the 2015 deliveries and the chief of the program forced to resign.
