The chess recommendation in the past has always been Shredder Chess. The difficulty is very scalable, and you can always ask to see a recommended move. Not sure if it is better or worse for kids though.

But while Shredder does include some tactics puzzles, it doesn't really explain them at all, and I don't think they would help a new person learn very much. I'd also recommend anyone learning chess to check out YouTube.

The raids have really sweet bonuses for the top ten contributors for each phase, but it seems tough to hit the 2nd and 3rd levels of the raid bonus unless everyone is really putting in some effort.
