I think if you play tenuki in response to my slide then I should follow up on it. I've found it's generally not a good idea to just reply to your opponent's tenuki and allow them to play on both sides - if you definitly have to then they either,

1) Had a forcing move
or
2)Your first move was too small and not worth replying to anyways.

Why did you choose 2 space low? Doesn't j3 give me a pincer/extension? I mean, if I j3 then you reply 3-3 it's tewari'd into you just approaching 2 spaces low without immediate room for a base and it's my move. (You would not 3-3 in response to j3)

e: On further thinking about this I think my 3-3 slide was not necessary since I'm playing out miai.

I played Go for the first time about a year ago and I think I still haven't had those 100 games I need to lose. Last summer I started teaching Go to my friend and we've played occasionally since then. At first I always won, but lately we have been much more equal. Yesterday we finished a game which was the most interesting I've played so far. I'm certain it won't look much to more experienced Go players, but we had a lot of fun. The formations were much more organic than they've been before. We took some pictures during the game. I'm black.

This is when the game started to look interesting. He had to go home after that and we decided to continue later.

I tried to take control of the upper left corner but failed miserably.

Upper right was mine though! As was the center and pretty much the rest of the board. I had a good flow going on. I could've killed the white formation in the center if I wanted to do, but I felt so confident of my control that I wanted to move towards the lower left.

A mistake! I don't remember exactly what happened here, but he managed to connect that white formation with a living group on the left and capture some of my stones in the process. When he played the move that led to this he had calculated past my next two moves, which took me by surprise.

This is how the game ended, before we filled the areas with captured stones. And this is how it looked after the fillings (I moved a black stone in the lower corner to make it easier to count, there was no no-man's-land there):

White has 6 points of captured area, black has 11.

We played with a 5,5 point komi.

White won by 0,5 points. :D

pretty strange opening moves for black on the bottom there. not normal to play opening moves on the 5th line, leaves it way to easy for invasion.

What are some professional games with the least amount of territory at the end of the game? I think its almost more fun taking away territory than surrounding it. anyone have games they remember where the final score was a very very low amount of points? tia

Nothing specific off the top of my head, though you might have fun looking at the players and games listed on the "amashi" page at Sensei's Library if that's the kind of play you like.

So my friend showed me a curious question from a game they played recently:
http://eidogo.com/#tlfvKc9D:0,0

The question concerns the status of the groups in the bottom left corner. My friend was thinking it was eternal life, because white can play at a1, black captures, and white recaptures. White can then play at a1 again in the future.

I thought about it for a few minutes, and figured that under japanese rules, black could just wait until the rest of the game is over, and pass. If white keeps trying to play at a1, black will get a point every time (b captures 2 stones for every stone w captures). If he really wants to force the game to end, he could accumulate points this way until he has enough to make up for his b1 group. Once that happens, he can pass when white plays a1 to give up the group and still win.

However, under chinese rules, captured stones go back into an opponent's bowl, and if black were to fill in his own territory he would gain no points (assuming all dame has been played). Thus, couldn't white prolong the game indefinitely? Is this really eternal life?

Xom

That's a seki.
Black can't approach at a1, because that would be self-atari.
White can't approach at a1, because that would be self-atari.
The possibility of the sequence W a1, B capture, W recapture doesn't make it not a seki.

In Japanese-style rules, White can't prolong the game indefinitely because he'll eventually give Black enough prisoners that Black can afford to pass.

In Chinese-style rules, repetition isn't allowed.
