Someone explain XBox Music to me. My 920 USB charging port fried overseas so I picked up a 1520. I had an extensive collection of albums dl'd from Xbox music. I have tried re dl'ing them, but in many cases the full album doesn't appear available anymore.

Now despite my 920's USB charging port being melted, the phone itself is still fully functional via charging with the charging plate. The albums that are only partially available on the 1520 still exist in full and are totally playable on my 920. Why? Is there a way to transfer that music to my 1520?

Contemplating ditching my Xbox music subscription and giving Spotify a shot.

Assuming you mean you had the songs downloaded as subscriptions and not bought, sometimes the store gets rearranged so the version you have isn't the current version they have, or they lose access to songs. You'll still be able to play the songs on the place they'd been given access until your license runs out, but then you won't and youi won't be able to download them to a new device. Yeah, it's pretty annoying.

Xbox music is just DRM and checks to see if you ever added a song to your collection. If you have the files you can play them on any device that has been authorized. You can plug your 920 in to a PC, open the music folder, and copy the songs. Then plug the 1520 in and drag the albums onto the 1520.

I'm fairly certain the DRM is locked to the device, even if the songs are all Xbox music I've tried copying off and back onto a new phone and it didn't work. It's possible I missed a step though, like starting Xbox music on the new device to register it first, etc. If you've done this then I'll downgrade my fairly certain to I'm fairly dumb.

Half of my subscription music is on OneDrive, and I have to authorize a new device, but once I do, it works. I currently have music on a Zune HD, my work desktop, a 1020 and a surface pro 3. When I downgraded from my 1520 to the 1020, nothing worked because I was at my device limit, but I was able to fix that by chatting with Microsoft support.

This is a great example of why putting your music in the cloud is better than having it on-device. PS, once it's in OneDrive, you can use my app Harmony Music to stream it on demand. It works best when your music is tagged correctly.

Or use SHAREit app wich lets you drag&drop files from your pc and send them via wifi to your phone, or send data between windows phones easily. I barely plug my phone via usb to my pc because of that app.

Something that's fairly cheap, connects to my PC, charges, and will actually work.
I bought a 3rd party iphone usb cable and it was poo poo, didn't connect properly and didn't charge my iphone unless I was physically pushing it in and at slight angle to make the leads contact each other.

The 635 has a standard micro-usb connector though, so pretty much everything is made to spec and works.

e: here's some positive, non-snarky content: the new OneDrive APIs announced today is good news for Harmony Music. Two key things that I can make happen in the app thanks to better APIs: 1) initial collection sync should be faster... on the order of seconds rather than minutes. 2) More audio metadata is available, including disc number, track number, and release year. That means I can order tracks by disc/track in the album views, and I can offer album browse grouping by release year, all of which was impossible with the old LiveSDK APIs.

And when I mash down on your little starter, then your spark plug will give me fire.
Is the 635 a decent improvement over the 520? I have a 520 and feature-wise it does everything I want, I don't care about having a bigger screen or anything, I'd just like something a bit more responsive. My main issue with my 520 is that it can be painfully slow moving between menus (I'm looking at you, Spotify). It's not enough of an issue for me that I'm willing to spend hundreds of dollars on a better phone but I was hoping there was a cheapish upgrade that might make a difference.

I'd recommend against buying another 512MB device. 1GB should be bare minimum, especially if you plan on upgrading to W10.

Seems that a 1Gb RAM 635 is coming, that or get a 535. I'd take furaxu's advice on not going with a 512mb device again as everything Microsoft releases already has 1Gb like the 435, 532, 535... etc.

This is less windows phone and more home automation, but I'll do a quick trip report on SmartThings who recently updated their windows phone app. I've wanted to dip my toe into home automation for a while now, but was afraid of all the different standards out there, what would be compatible with what, would I invest into a dead end group, who supports windows phone, etc. SmartThings appears to be the safe bet and they've recently stated they'll be moving to a universal app with Cortana support. All I've done is buy two z-wave modules for my already existing thermostats, then buy a couple z-wave light switches, and our windows phones are acting as presence sensors (come/go/IFTT). So the app allows me to toggle the lights on and off, mess with my thermostats including flipping from heat to cool (an annoying issue this time of year in Arizona), and check to see if either of us are home without texting/waiting for a reply. Insteon was the other front-runner but they're pretty locked down compatibility-wise and I've heard they haven't updated their app much. Also Samsung just bought SmartThings but they appear to be staying open source (at least so far as I've seen). If you have three hours to kill, take a look.

tl;dr Smart Things supports Windows Phone for home automation poo poo.

Wish I had known about this before I invested in the Insteon stuff. The experience has been fine. If you don't mind using a spare iPhone to make sure the settings stick. Also the Windows Phone app still doesn't support my Nest so there's that.

Yeah that blows. Not surprising but terrible nonetheless. So much for open, platform agnostic standards. :(:arghfist:

I doubt that Microsoft is in a position to develop their own contactless payment system while cutting deals with banks and credit card companies to make it work more seamlessly. I suppose they could buy a good startup and rebrand it as their own like with Outlook and Calendar on Android and iOS. They'll have to scramble if they want it ready in time for Windows 10.

I'm pretty sure Google would cut off desktop Windows support for Chrome and somehow break Gmail's display for all Windows platforms if they thought they could get away with it. Semi-related, they're apparently killing the chat protocol allowing Google chat to work on Outlook.com too. Nadella's outreach is extremely one-sided.

I did this back when Google dropped Exchange. Log into outlook.com with your MS account and create an alias ending in @outlook.com, then set your Gmail account to forward to it; that's most of it right there.

Obviously I'm biased, but I did this about a year ago and it's worked so well that I feel stupid for sticking with gmail for a long as I did. I had drank so much of the tech blog kool-aid that I didn't even give it the time of day (long with things like bing.com search).

There are a few guides already posted (and some replies), but I did the forward gmail.com to a special alias for gmail junk. I then created 4 new aliases under outlook (things like emails for forums signups, personal, etc.) It's worked out great.

I got scared off outlook.com when I looked at it a few years ago because it said that if you don't log in via the outlook.com website for a year or so, then they are at liberty to delete your account.

Now I've never heard of them actually doing that, and I bet they wouldn't, and I bet it was just a stupid oversight because someone had failed to update the FAQ, and hopefully the terms+conditions have since changed. But I only ever access email via apps (Outlook, or WP8, or Windows Mail) and I never use the website and I didn't want even the hypothetical risk of losing my two decades of mail archives. So instead I bought an Office365 email account for $8/month with no capacity limit on the size of my email archive, and 1TB of OneDrive space.

This is old information, and it might be different now, but you have to tag the genre as a ringtone. You can save the attachment by doing a long press on the file, I think.

I've not done this so I could be wrong, but I think you can just download it then open the files app and move it to the ringtones folder, then select it under ringtones.

This actually does not work, and it's mind-boggling that it doesn't. My wife downloaded an MP3 on her Lumia 930 that she wanted to use as a ringtone, and couldn't figure out how. After some research, I figured the ringtones need to be in the Ringtones folder. So I used the Files app to move it from Music to Ringtones. Doesn't work. I had to connect to the PC, and physically create a new copy of the file before it would register.

Then a few days later she was showing me a new song she'd set as a custom ringtone for me, so I asked if she did the whole PC copy thing on her own and she looked at me like I was retarded and said no, she used the Ringtone Maker app on the phone and it did it for her.

Still makes no sense why moving a file from Music to Ringtones won't let it register as a ringtone though.

Initial impressions of the Lumia 635 from Cricket:

- Irritated Cricket disabled tethering, I would have picked up a third-party unlocked had I anticipated that but oh well, not the OS fault

- Beautiful UI, very slick. I love how the tiles work and the general infrastructure of how everything is laid out

- Nice to see a functional/informative lock screen!

- Everything is very simple and straightforward, as well as operating very fast

- Holy hell are the apps a barren wasteland. Disappointed many of my favorite services/apps aren't available. Pocket, ToDoist, not to mention all of the Google suite of apps

- Perhaps the battery still needs calibration but off the charger this morning I did a 45 minute workout with Spotify, the battery came down to 73%. That being said, Over four hours later it's at 71%....

- Really dislike Internet Explorer and hate that the Bing search is not able to be overridden. Also had issues with authenticating with Google sign-in on some services where the page would just hang after hitting accept. Came back later and it worked, it was a mystery

- I won't speak too much or critically about the specific hardware on the 635 since it's considered a budget phone. I am making sure not to judge WP on the unique HW that it has expecting that the higher-end phones have better build-quality/camera/features/etc. That being said, it does feel a bit cheap as hell but I kind of like that. I feel like I wouldn't mind tossing it around and being careless with it. Camera is passable in low-light and decent enough in proper lighting.

- Linked to my company's archaic Lotus Notes (using Activesync paradoxially, but I'm not a sysadmin so don't know why that works that way) easier than on iOS or Android. Never asked me for any capability to remote wipe and was very simple and straight forward. Not sure how I feel about linked inboxes yet, but the choice is mine and I appreciate that.

- A bit weary about not having interface/apps for many things in my lifestyle. No Strava/Garmin Connect to track my cycling. No Fitocracy and the web version is impossible. No official Starbucks app so can't get coffees/reload on a whim. For the interim, I will be using my Nexus 7 as the link between those things but it's bigger and can't hang around with me all the time.

- Really interested in seeing what some of the higher-end hardware has to offer. Qi charging, outstanding cameras, etc.

If the apps were more robust I think I would go full boat to WP as I really like the interface and structure of the OS. What's the trajectory here? Is WP gaining momentum and we SHOULD see improvement in this space at some point or have developers uniformally cast it out and it's going to be neglected until ~*something*~ changes that?

Mailing my Sony off today for warranty repair for at least 2-3 weeks so will have more time with the phone and very interested to see how my experience changes. I wrote this up more for myself to reference back in a few weeks to see how it changes.
