I've not 'implied' anything. I've said several times now that I don't think the vast majority of Scottish people would get upset at the sight of a Union Jack. The straw man is you concluding from that that I think everyone who disagrees with me is mental. Do you need anything else explaining? mediadave posted:I've never heard the phrase 'butcher's apron' in the wild. Me neither.

jre posted:Could explain why how mental or otherwise Scottish people are is relevant to their dislike of a national flag ? Are you pretending to be taking my use of the word 'mental' at face value as a description of somebody with a mental illness? If so, I apologise because I was using it merely as a colloquial term to indicate that they are slightly nutty. Off their rocker. Unhinged. Touched in the head. And yes, somebody who gets ranty at the sight of the British flag, or the EU flag, is probably all these things. I apologise if my use of the word 'mental' has caused you distress and I will endeavour to avoid it in future.

There is a but of a difference, I'd wager, between a Union Jack, which has stood for and represented vicious murder and oppression, and arguably genocide, and an EU flag.

Who's talking about self-hatred? We're discussing negative connotations of the Union Jack, in many ways a relic of empire (and a pervasive symbol of Empire in the Hardt and Negri sense), and someone brought up the EU flag as a comparison. We're not discussing other European flags, just how the Union Jack symbolizes some very very nasty things to many people, in many cases well within modern memory. Anti-Catholic discrimination was still very much an active thing into the 60s, I'm not just talking about Indian famines. However, if we do want to talk about self-hatred, it does seem to me very often that some quarters of the UK population buy into the myth of the British Empire as a force for good far more than happens in other European countries. Like, Germans and Italians and the like generally seem to be more "self-hating" if that's how you want to put it. Just my experience though, and probably limited.

Coohoolin posted:Why can't I find any decent veal in this country? Is it a cultural thing or some weird medical reason? If you're talking about Scotland, there is definitely good veal available. Ask a butcher for rose veal, as local as he can provide. Veal is a great product, but it still has a horrible reputation in Britain because of the way veal calves were raised and transported, two or three decades ago.
