http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000475963/article/australian-rugby-star-jarryd-hayne-signs-with-49ers

NFL.com posted:

He had initially crossed them off his list, but on Monday, Jarryd Hayne chose the San Francisco 49ers.

The Australian rugby star announced his signing, adding that the Niners had beaten out the Seattle Seahawks and Detroit Lions, the Mercury News reported.

Hayne has been preparing for the decision since October, when he quit the sport -- a "bombshell" move in the rugby world -- to focus on pursuing an opportunity in the NFL. He has twice been named the best player in the National Rugby League, and at 6-foot-2 and 226 pounds, ran a 4.53 40-yard dash in a December workout.

The 27-year-old spent time visiting the Seattle Seahawks and consulted with current free agent running back Reggie Bush in 2014. He was rumored to be close to signing with Bush's former team, the Lions, last week before announcing his decision to join San Francisco.

Hayne met 49ers coach Jim Tomsula in December, but initially eliminated the team due to the uncertainty surrounding former head coach Jim Harbaugh's job status. After Harbaugh departed for Michigan, Hayne was back on board with the Niners.

The pairing isn't by mere coincidence -- Tomsula has experience with international players, having spent several years coaching in NFL Europe and ascending to head coach of the Rhein Fire in 2006.

Hayne is guaranteed $100,000 in his deal with the 49ers, and acknowledged his transition from rugby to football isn't exactly a safe move.

"This is a huge risk," Hayne said. "I'm taking a massive leap of faith."

Hayne will compete for a spot as a return man and running back. Even if Frank Gore's time in San Francisco is finished, Hayne will have decent competition in a Niners backfield that includes Carlos Hyde and Alfonso Smith.

Would love to see him play a game this fall, it might even convince me to watch NFL (which has been shoved down my throat since I was like 2 and which I've never managed to care about)

Fusitua's another one I might have expected to get the call, he must be hurt too. Starting Maumalo and Kata is a little worrying, especially when you consider the class that Newcastle have in the halves and centres. We should try to make sure only one of Vete or Lisone is on the field at any one time, otherwise we're too green up front.

Yeah. Lilyman, Matulino and Matagi should be easy selections. We could go with three props on the bench with Henry to cover dummy half and back row, but I think we'd be more comfortable with Friend on the bench to cover Leuluai.

Lolohea's long term future is either at standoff or fullback, but he's not ready now. Getting him game time on the wing is a way of introducing him to the intensity of first grade without the responsibility of one of the key positions in the team. I wouldn't worry too much about the kicking, Tomkins and Leuluai are both capable of kicking on the last if Johnson isn't available.

This is sounding like a loving disaster. In order to stockpile money for DCE, they had to let Watmough and Glenn Stewart go, and as a result Brett desperately wants out. Somehow Foran looks like he's escaping, and now they're cutting DCE loose? I'm just glad that the Matai/Warriors rumours are officially over now that they signed whatever is remaining in his shoulder to a deal.

While Matai's shoulder would've exploded on setting foot in Auckland it is concerning that we keep whiffing on all of our big name targets despite offering well over the going rate if you believe the reports. Pretty Canberra-esque on the free agent market since we signed Tomkins (other than Hoffman who others don't seem to rate as high as I do).

It's hard to tell how close we were to anyone. I doubt that were anywhere near Merrin. Taumololo was obviously close if McFadden and Doyle made the trip to Townsville to try to close the deal. And on Foran I don't think it was serious beyond that one tweet from Watson.

I rate Hoffman, but we're also probably overpaying for a 30 year old with plenty of mileage. The same probably could have been said of Steve Price ten years ago, so I'm willing to see what happens.

The thing about Hoffman is he know how to run a line. People might put that down to Cronk/Smith but I've watched him for a while and he's crafty especially attacking the tryline. I doubt many forwards have scored as many tries as he has year on year, and tryline attack is an area where we often look bereft of ideas.

Adam is a wonderful example of how a player should go about his business in the NRL
Cronk and Hoffman played on different sides of the field. Last year Hoffman looked good with Ben loving Roberts as his half. Mannering looked like our most dangerous back rower in the red zone, which was surprising because he can be a worry with ball in hand anywhere else on the field. Moving him to lock this year removes any chance of him trying to do anything stupid in that regard.
