The metaphor almost works, but the reason it's "almost" and not "completely" requires you to actually know a few things about the internet, and more specifically, the companies that run it. If ISPs existed in a vacuum, sure, there wouldn't be a need for net neutrality. But the two major wrinkles that make us need it are "large companies can pay to get their stuff prioritized, squeezing out smaller competitors" and "ISPs are often owned by media companies, who can prioritize their own stuff, squeezing out competitors." If Google Fiber allowed you to view YouTube at full speed but choked Hulu, Netflix, Blip.tv, or any other video streaming service, that'd give YouTube an edge.

I know, preaching to the choir, but still.

It's by far the best anti-Net-Neutrality cartoon we've seen, in that you have to get into specifics to explain why it's wrong instead of just rolling your eyes at how nonsensical it is, but it's telling that to make that happen Beeler had to make his argument "losing Net Neutrality would not be the end of the world" instead of "maintaining Net Neutrality will be the end of the world" like everyone else.

Canada's government is trying to implement a new maximum sentence in Canadian law. Currently the maximum sentence allowed is life without the possibility of parole for 25 years. They want to implement a new sentence which would be life without the possibility of parole, ever.

When 'Mac' gets posted, I often find myself a little shocked at how vile it is, which is surprising given these threads' long history with Ramirez and the McCoys. Eventually, the latter loses its edge with familiarity - as soon as your unfocused eye spots the distinctive crosshatching or nauseating color palette, you're subconsciously anticipating something horrendous by the time you get around to actually reading the text half a second later. But Mac strikes from ambush, at the tail end of a post full of Brit-toons which are typically a blur of in-jokes, borderline-dadaist caricatures, and broad satire. After briefly PBFing over the usual brit-toons, I scroll down lazily and suddenly get smacked in the face with the British equivalent of Chuck Asay.

I understand playing fast and loose with the President's height for thematic reasons, because it's not generally an element that affects whether or not the drawing is recognizable as the person in question, but what I don't get is cartoonists drawing him with a weak chin, or even NO chin. Obama's most prominent features are his ears and his pointy, triangular chin, so drawing him without one is a blatantly counter-intuitive, caricature fail.

These guys focus on "big purple lips!" while ignoring "chin," and then they try to claim "not racist!"

Beeler's metaphors here are a giant butterfly, a giant log and a giant man, each with a label. Truly, the man has a better understanding of metaphor than a little twirp like you or me.

On rare occasions, he does come up with gags which are decently clever, message aside. That Obama "in one ear-out the other" gag from pages back, for example.

At this point, what he uses the gags to say is 100% mindless swill, of course, and his politics on just about everything but gay rights are completely trash.

...Also the pro gay-rights cartoon for which he won the John Fischetti award in September was basically just a direct copy of this painting. Normally I'd chalk that up to mere coincidence, since the main idea in the image is hardly original (Bennett's used permutations of it on at least two separate occasions), but even the pose is almost identical, with the positions of the figures merely reversed.

One of the biggest parts of Asay's style was that you more or less had to share his beliefs/get in his head in order to read it as he intended. Mostly because he just drew people more or less consistently regardless of if he agreed or not.

I like that Inuit sculpture next to the lamp.

For the non-Canadians not in on the joke: In 1995 a paranoid schizophrenic jumped the fence and got into the PM's residence while the RCMP guards were sleeping/wanking off/otherwise not paying attention. Unlike our current PM, Cretien did not hide in a closet when a threat materialized. He and his wife barricaded themselves in their bedroom and he grabbed an Inuit carving off the bedstand to cold-cock the guy if he got through the door. Fortunately for the schizo the cops woke up and took him down.

Maybe I'm missing the loathsomeness in this particular cartoon, then. Seems to me, after glancing at the linked news story, that the police and social workers performed their job poorly, at least according to that one detective, and are being admonished for it. Mac's on the ball as far as that's concerned.
