Bennett does have something of a character schtick, but he usually reserves it for sketches nowadays where he abuses gabe. During his reviews he's pretty much himself from what I saw when he was at a con in guelph a few years ago. And he's definitely been getting better at his reviews since mike the engineer got more involved. I hope the guy gets better. Back pains would loving suck.

Hbomberguy posted:I get the logic of what you're trying to say - you watched the show and had this 'feeling' that the creator really had something to say, and that elevates its quality for you. This is a common feeling in anime - people see all the crosses in Evangelion and think Art, when plenty of Gainax' other shows have similar themes and images and simply execute them in a less pretentious way. TTGL has more to say than Eva by a long shot, and KLK (Trigger but they are basically Gainax come on) more still. That's not what I'm saying it all: in fact, I even say something like it's not the best in my post. I was merely using a show I really like as an example of my point that some shows do deserve in-depht analysis. Eureka Seven is a different beast than Evangelion, but both can be pretty dense in terms of imagery and reference that go over their audience's head. While they have completely different themes and messages and whatnot, they are similar in that both shows have mechas and both are trying to tell more complicated stories. As for the creator having soemthing to say, ti's not something I "felt", it's something that can easily be inferred through the show itself, as well as something the director directly stated: https://www.japansociety.org/resources/content/2/0/5/4/documents/sato_mcgray%20interview.pdf (It's a great interview, read it) I'm not saying only artsy shows can have meaning, I'm saying this particular show could make for a pretty interesting review. In fact, Eureka Seven isn't that artsy: it's a show with giant sky-surfing robots that can turn into cars! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjXD0qx9HsM

She's super intelligent and fun to talk to if you ever get the chance. And thanks about Movie Nights! I wish I could have a co-host all the time, but unfortunately it just has to be when people are available. All the Phelan ones were shot while he was visiting. The comment about Doug not being able to internet is also true. At least when Holly was there, his video commentaries were recorded by sitting close to his camera and recording it on there, because he did not know how to record at his computer. I can also confirm that he doesn't know how to use MP3 Skype Recorder and refuses to learn because he tried it once and it didn't work. True story, he asked me to sit in on the Moulin Rouge commentary and record them. Not to be in the commentary, just to be there and press record. Phelan called him up and went over how to use MP3 Skype recorder, step by step (download it, get in a skype call, and press record--that's literally it). And then he just had Nash do it. As far as I know, he still doesn't know how it works.

Bat the animated series managed to balance the fun aspects of batman with the grimness of his character. Like harley quinn being a complete goofball but stustill indicative of a abusive relationship between her and the joker

I really enjoyed Man of Steel. I liked the man trying to find his place in the world angle they went with. It certainly wasn't perfect and could have done more to connect Clark with the audience and Superman with the people he was trying to save. Gyges posted:While great, they aren't really a movie. I need to go back and watch those again to see if Lois is still awesome in them or if other versions of Lois are infiltrating my memories of Fleitcher Lois. She took a lot of initiative but she often got in over her head that required Superman to save her. Still great cartoons, but the last four became war propaganda films when they switched studios. So expect racist caricatures of the Japanese and King Kong-style native tribal folk.

Well, I was talking about the actual colours of it* moreso than the tone (if that's the right word to use). Sure, it was a bit "darker" than Superman movies traditionally are, but it was hardly, I don't know, Watchmen or anything. I'm not sure if I;d like it if Superman in the comics became MoS Superman all of a sudden, but don't think every portrayal of the character has to be the same. *Honestly, the fact that some of the early photos for the next one alone show him in a slightly bluer suit is enough to make me optimistic about it.

Most of these Internet Personalities, and not just the critics (although in away they're all critics of our culture), is that to some extent they're all playing characters, but the characters are extensions of themselves and a vehicle for them to express their opinions in more exaggerated ways. And this isn't just the youtubers, it's also podcasters, tv, radio personalities and comedians who all do this to some extent. So when they say "It's just a character!" there's always some semblance of truth to it. They're saying what they say primarily for entertainment purposes. More often than not it is their true opinion, though, just exaggerated to generate a stronger reaction. There are exceptions, of course. Colbert, for example, who is obviously parodying the opinions he expresses on his show. But for the most part, you can bet that the personality is using this entertainment avenue as a platform to let their true opinions flow, exaggerated for entertainment purposes or not. Still, I don't take it very seriously since after all, it is primarily entertainment and they're just people with flawed opinions just like everyone else. The only correct opinion is mine, after all ... until I change my mind. Gianthogweed fucked around with this message at 23:46 on Mar 8, 2015 |

Maybe I'm being disingenuous, but considering his non-existent social media presence, and the absolute lack of fucks given re: managing his website and the community it attracts, this seems a fair assumption. For some reason, I couldn't get past the fact that Doug was never bothered to check his spelling. Granted, not everyone in the world has a fantastic time with spelling, but he continued to make incredibly obvious errors of the sort that couldn't be caught with spellcheck - such as homophonic pairs, like substituting "pair" for "pear" as in "partridge in a pair tree." But yes, I do get the feeling he doesn't know how to use the internet or technology to its best advantage.

I tend not to give people too much poo poo for spelling. My first language is English, and I have excellent skills in it-- and even I gently caress up spelling. Didn't Spoony start off doing primarily text reviews before he went to video? He's been around for a long time, I know. One of the first review sites I can remember going to was Harry Knowles' "Aint it Cool News". Which I think is still around in some form or another. Don't feel like looking for it though. What an ugly site. I remember him drumming up hype for Star Wars episode 1 saying it was the best movie ever and that Lucas hadn't lost his touch when he went to a preview showing. He also had all the inside scoops on the lord of the rings movies when they started going into production. He wasn't so much a reviewer as he was hype cranker outer. He was full of poo poo. He did invent the buttnumbathon though. I love that word and still use it to this day. Gianthogweed fucked around with this message at 02:51 on Mar 9, 2015 |
