Cook said at least twice that the ATV updates today were "just the beginning," so I'm sure the price drop is a precursor to a new ATV or even an Apple TV Set.

At this point I like the idea of having a set-top box I can change out every couple of years as opposed to an entire TV that would need to be replaced, but we'll see. Either way I'm ready for some kind of update; other than my iPhone and iPad my ATV is the device/gadget I use most in my house, so an updated version would be much appreciated.

The upcoming things could just be new content providers for all we know. My ATV sits unplugged while my Chromecast and PS4 handle all media needs.

I don't have a PS4, but I'm struggling to find reasons to use my Chromecast since I have my Apple TV and Airplay. I mean, sure, anything in Chrome can go into Chromecast, butalmost anything on my phone plus any video file on my computer can get into my Apple TV, including from my browser, so I don't see many reasons to use Chromecast.

I'd love to ditch the ATV3 in favor of using the XBox One for everything because I like having as few components as possible but my wife likes Airplay for music. As far as I know there's no way to just turn on the xbox, go to the regular music app on the iphone, press play, and have music come out of my surround system like there is on the ATV.

edit: We don't have cable or satellite, we watch everything streaming, including a pretty large personal plex library using plexconnect to hijack the trailers app on the ATV3. There's a real Plex app for the XBone, along with amazon and netflix streaming, so the only thing missing is Airplay.

My house is a mix of Android phones, iPhones, iPads, Android tablets, Macs and PCs, so the ATV is pretty much useless for most of the devices, whereas the CC is compatible with all of them.

I can airplay to my Plex installation -- but that may be a feature of PHT running on an HTPC rather than through the consoles.

Samsung is manufacturing certain TVs now with evolution boxes that can be replaced/upgraded. I would think Apple would have a similar thing if they manufactured a display.

Fair enough, we have two iMacs and two iPhones in my house, so it all integrates perfectly.

Open to third party developers, requiring more HD space for downloadable apps? It could become a casual gaming console with that alone.

Aside from that, deep Siri integration and possibly the rumored ability to use it as a cable box with your pay-tv provider.

That'd mean instant voice search that brings up iTunes/Netflix/next airing/on demand options. Also no more typing in search fields by default and quick and easy channel/app switching.

I use an Apple TV and an Amazon Fire stick both plugged into my AV receiver and switch between the two with an input change, control both with my phone.

Now that I can get HBO I don't think I will use the Firestick too much. It was great for all their HBO shows, and of course Prime video. But will only use it for Prime video now.

I use the Amazon Prime app on my iPhone or iPad and Airplay it over. A native app on the ATV would obviously be better but iOS->Airplay has always worked well enough that I haven't felt the need for anything else.

Hey, the product page says "starting at" so what do you guys think the new and improved Apple TV will be? I think the design is already perfect, but knowing Apple, it'll be incredibly thin and operate off fan appreciation. I kinda wonder if Apple would really make a set top box. I'm not sure if that'd be worth it to me or how that'd work with Comcast and Verizon wanting to control the entire market themselves.

Anyway, yeah, it says "starting at"

Where does it say "starting at"? All the pages I looked at say "Just $69".

Also, another question- if I swap out my old 720P ATV with one of the new ones, is there any sort of data transfer process or do I just log back into iTunes and Home Sharing and that's it?

Endless Mike

There's no data to transfer. You'll have to remove unwanted apps from the home screen, I guess, but yeah, just log in and it'll work.

Another year, another rumor of an Apple TV subscription program (WSJ link). This time, sans everything Comcast owns (NBCUniversal networks).

This one looks more like a SlingTV competitor than an ala carte channel/app ecosystem.

I wonder if this is really going to be a SlingTV competitor, or more just allowed access to the different existing Apple TV apps (ESPN, Disney, Fox, FX Now, etc.) under one general cost?

Don't all of those need a cable provider login? If this new package doesn't, that's huge. (If the rumor is true.)

Currently, yes. I'm just spit-balling that it may be easier for Apple to work out a deal where "Apple TV Subscribers" can just log right in to the existing applications, rather than develop a whole secondary way of accessing what is ultimately the same content. Cable subscribers would still be able to log in based on their subscriptions, but these Apple TV subscribers can as well for cheaper ($30-$40/mo is the figure being thrown around).

It would be something that would work with Apple TV's both old and new, and isn't far removed from what I assume HBO NOW will be - another way to access HBO GO.

That said, if they're going the SlingTV route, they're going to have to develop something to watch a live feed - but I think that's already possible with some of the apps. WWE Network, at least.

I mean there are tons of live streaming apps on the thing: ESPN, MLB, NHL, NBA, Skynews, ABC at times and I am sure I am missing some others too.

I think at least half of the network apps enable live viewing. ESPN, WWE, CNBC, ABC, all 3 Disney channel apps. PBS, HBO, and the cable channels like History, A&E, and Lifetime don't do live. But obviously it can be done.

I'd like to see a more on-screen-guide-like interface for the new iteration. To truly replace cable you need to make "let's see what's on" easier to do.

Two major rumors in the same week? Maybe it's finally happening.

New Apple TV Set Top Will Debut This Summer With App Store, Siri

Major points:
-New hardware (likely the same A8 chip in the iPhone 6) with a significant amount of onboard storage (current unit has 8GB).
-An App Store with a SDK for devs along with possible HomeKit integration.
-Revamped OS with Siri support/voice control.
-All this along with the previously rumored Apple TV subscription service.

We'll see in June since the article pegs the reveal at WWDC.

Funny, these are exactly the same features that Thrawn and I were discussing a few pages back as what we'd like to see in a new ATV.

If it runs apps, then lets you cache things. Potentially also downloading your movies/music.

And if you want to go nuts, wasn't there a rumor a few years ago that the airport extreme was going to cache all the Apple things on your network? Now that AppleTV is doing HomeKit, maybe it will be a full house caching solution as well.

Edit: I don't think it will be caching, but I think we'll see something like 32gb of data or something silly, maybe even sizes like the phones/ipads have (I can't see them using a spinning disk, or even the pci-e solutions).

OS X Server will cache app and OS updates. Anything more complicated than that (like web caching) is really hard to get right.

haveblue
Aug 15, 2005

Toilet Rascal
Caching really isn't that necessary when home network and broadband capacity is greater than the data rate of most media files. I think the box being streaming-only is intentional and won't change anytime soon.

If they want to make it a complete home server, though, that could be really good.

It says it would have an app store, so the storage would likely be for those apps. If they let you download casual games like Angry Birds and control it with your iPhone, then the storage would be necessary. And pretty sweet, honestly. Like I was saying before, that change alone makes it a casual gaming console. I'm assuming "significant amount of onboard storage" isn't going to be 1TB or something silly, just far more than it has now. 32GB-64GB would make sense.

I think it's a little funny that the next Apple TV is going back to on-device storage since that's what the very first Apple TV box had (from wikipedia, looks like it had 40GB and 160GB sizes) and it sold nothing.

But then that device had to have iTunes stream the content to it (later it got the ability to rent and purchase on its own) and it had hard disks (we'll probably get flash storage).

Edit: An additional hope: the Siri integration comes to 3rd gen Apple TV's via software update but you can only access it with an iPhone/iPad with the Remote app. I'm assuming the new ATVs will come with a remote with a speaker ala the Amazon Fire TV.

Right, I'm not saying it's a bad move, it's just that it's come full circle again.

it went from Hobby to sorta-serious Hobby/ipad accessory which was then neglected for several product cycles and now they're going to give it the ol' college try again.
