Actually the best saver is making tea from pine needles. That's how some of the original native americans helped the original immigrants get over scurvy. Super high in Vitamin C.

Some kinds of pine can abort fetuses when consumed so maybe do some research before grabbing a handful of needles.

Pine tea is a good thing tho, just some kinds of conifer will hurt you.

Look at this scrub. Feed the ascorbic vegetation with a fish tank full of sardines, pumping the clean water back to the sardines. Then eat the sardines whole and raw for their protein and B-12. Just dunk your hand in whenever you need a snack.

I feel super dumb saying this and I almost posted in the "bad with money" thread instead, but here goes...

So, I started a job at a new restaurant about four months ago. I make pretty good money for the service industry, because I have a lot of experience and I live in the Bay Area. Without disclosing too much, I am an unmarried woman with no dependents. I happened to take a closer look at my paystub and I'm paying ~37% of my net income in taxes at the moment. I don't object to paying taxes. I love libraries, roads, schools, etc. but I feel like that at that percentage of my income, I ought to be living in some fantastic socialist utopia rather than just existing in SF. Without any special payouts or circumstances and making what I do, that seems like an absurdly high proportion of my income to be paying? Am I incorrect? Or just out of touch?

E: I suppose a ballpark income is necessary... I make ~48k at my primary job on average (guaranteed 2 days a week, usually work 3 or 4) plus extra side jobs, (i'm also in school for 14 units) but I'm just going off this one paycheck for my main job. Not trying to hide income or do anything sketchy but nearly 40% seems really high.

Sounds like you're over-withholding to me.. I make ~48k as well and my fed withholding works out to about 26%ish total: ~8%, FICA 7.65%, plus state (OR, ~7% without looking it up), with 1 federal and state withholding, also.

I just filled out the standard form (W4?) for a single woman with no dependents, I can ask at work to adjust but I'm not really sure what grounds I'd have to do so... Genuinely, my employer is fantastic and I don't think they're doing anything weird with my hours or pay. I just happened to spend some time looking at the deductions and it seemed really, really high.

Supplements aren't regulated (in the US) and oftentimes don't even contain the poo poo they have written on the bottle. If they do have the poo poo written on the bottle there's no guarantee it's in a bioavailable form and you may just end up pissing it all out unused.

You're way better off browsing the produce section for whatever fruits and veg are dirt cheap that week - I routinely get fruit for well under $1.00/lb and veg for as low as $0.20/lb. You just have to be open to trying/cooking new things every week, which is good because a varied diet is the best anyway. Organic is pretty much all bullshit from a health perspective and it's not clear how helpful it is from an enviornmental perspective, so feel free to ignore it and get the dirt cheap produce.

There's a whole thread on cheap eating in GWS that will keep your wallet light and keep you healthy, it starts off a bit slow because the op is just a question but it's well worth your time to read through it for money saving ideas.

Are your primary wages tip-based? I know in some of the states I've lived in (never lived in CA), wait staff or other tipped workers have a very large percentage of their wages withheld as taxes to account for the cash you receive as tips.

I think the taxation varies by state, maybe a server or bartender from CA would have a better idea.

You don't need a reason to update your withholdings, it's not about your employer being good or bad. It's about whether or not the withholding is correct. At least go and ask what is on there so you can check to make sure it's right.

Something not mentioned; itemize those donations. They REALLY add up (assuming you cycle through clothes / books / whatever and donate them to charity)

I itemized almost a thousand dollars of goods / charitable donations last year and it was like woah

You'll probably get a lot back at tax time, as was said those numbers sound really high.

If any state has a provision that prohibits "unconscionable" rent increase, I would think California is it, and that amount would certainly exceed any sane judge's threshold, notice period be damned.
