If you're going to kill the monster anyway, use your drat traps

I dunno why, but players online seem to rarely use traps - they're free damage, and you can either use them when the monster is exhausted for extra beatdown time, or use them when the monster is enraged to buy yourself some safe damage time.

When soloing against monsters with dangerous enrages, I also like to delay the first mount until they enrage, so they haven't built up any resistance to it.

Some combination of traps/mounts/sonic/flash bombs can incapacitate a monster for a good long time, and really cut down your hunt times. Plus it's satisfying as hell to really pound the poo poo out of a helpless monster with huge combos. Very often you'll finish a big combo as a monster breaks out of a trap or stands up, and promptly stagger/stun/trip it again immediately, letting you lay on even more punishment.

I know there's a learning curve and all that but does Monster Hunter work as a good "chill by myself and grind as I listen to podcasts" game or am I gonna have to play online and also, is the game okay without the New 3ds or am I definitely gonna want that second nub/quicker loading times?

It can be both and people play the game with both (I'm an advocate of the N3DS but old 3DSs with a control pad pro work just as well).

It's 2006. I am taking 276 yeti furs from the goodies hoard.
I have almost 80 hours in the game and haven't played online yet. I'm sure I will eventually but there's so much poo poo to do, the game is never-ending. There are some pretty intense parts that will probably require your full concentration but there's almost always the option to go chill out and grind something less challenging

Also I've only played it on a New 3DS but the extra camera control with the nub is really nice. Many earlier installments didn't even have that option and people still got way into the game, but for what it's worth I can't imagine going back

It's THE "chill by yourself and grind" game because there's so many boring/bullshit quests in it that aren't hunts, and a bunch of the hunts become rote once you start grinding them for parts

quote:

or am I gonna have to play online

I mean, you probably are at some point, technically most/all of the gathering hall quests are soloable but multi makes them both much easier and way more fun

Everyone who tells you that you can play it "just fine" without a CPP are technically correct but the difference between playing MH without a second stick and with one is fuckin' massive

So is GRank non-crimson Fatalis not in the game yet? My weapon tour moved on to hammers and I kinda wanted to make his. I've got the Gog hammer right now since I had a billion spare parts but I'm not crazy about the sleep and the tiny sliver of purple on it, and I just made a S+1 set that I want to take advantage of. What are the best end-game hammers that don't involve farming Rajang or Savage Jho?

Yes, but it is a certain kind of grind. Think Pokemon Collect-em-all, rather than a stat based inflate-the-numbers grind. Most of your time spend grinding will contribute next to nothing toward your progressing. Likewise, when you're actually trying to progress on to new content it can often be anything but chill. That also means it can take a minute before you breach enough content that you actually have anything that you can 'chill' and just grind out.

BUT, I've dropped like 150 hours into this thing already, and most of that time was spent doing exactly what you're talking about : repeating easier content a bunch while listening to podcasts. Just note, that again it won't be very chill at the start, especially if you're new. These games are probably some of the most frustrating games around until something 'clicks', and even then, you will likely want to progress a good bit, just so you have gear that can outclass some of the things you want to grind. If you're willing to put that initial 'investment' in, the game is a fantastic grinder.

Decided to go for the Crimson Fatalis hammer since it has super high raw and a decent amount of purple and farming up all the parts took around 20 minutes. Stygian Zinogre just clicked for me, every fight before now was a frantic mess, but I needed tails to upgrade my IG. Mostly just reading the thread and paying attention to his movements more than trying to be super dodgy all the time, since he can move quickly enough to just swat me. Went through the fight relying on a Health palico entirely for healing, that plus Seregios IG means you can spent almost the entire fight without sheathing.

Now I'm actually considering grinding out his armor, since it looks interesting and I'm a sucker for collecting armor sets.

Edit; Questions I had that I forgot - Can you only get Deviljho Saliva from quest rewards, and not carves or breaks? And is there any tips or preferred methods of dodging for avoiding Rathalos' homing dive, because that is so much bullshit and the double-hit nature of it is throwing off my rolls.

Remember that each shell type has its own gameplay style.

Normal shells benefit Shotgun blasts.
Long shells benefit treating it like a lance that has an operable cannon every couple of minutes.
Wide shells are completely about using charged shot after charged shot.

Figure out which of the three are more to your taste and go from there.

For me, it clicked when i started to get used to the whole cycle of poke, shell, reload, poke, evade, poke, shell, reload, slam, burst. That sort of thing. I was trying to use it like i'd use a weapon with a roll and a decent sheath speed and kept getting owned for it.

Now my normal shot lance is just me getting into a slam+burst as much as possible. The pokes are just to evade off to move around, shots are for me to reload and slam off.

That and the lance attacks being really, really slow to recover from unless you evade, since you can't use guard to cancel recovery frames like you can with a roll.

Despite the name, the long GL is actually the most "normal" of the three - normal and wide are the more specialised ones.

Alright. I got a hang for it then, guess it's just not for me. Cool weapon. It's really effective, tails come off, parts break, and monster die quick enough. It just doesn't feel like I'm ever doing as much as I am in practice. That's fine. I have a similar problem with Longsword. It will get incredibly frustrated with it and feel like I played awful, but then the clear time was great, all parts broken, whatever.

Anyway, enjoy the weapon. Wish I could get more into it, because loving explosions.

Hunting Horn was the surprise winner for me, that thing is loving bonkers. Built in minds eye and fastest unsheathed movement speed, crazy good buffs, ko damage, and hilarious weapon models and sounds.

People who play it as a 'support' weapon with Wide Range are dumb, Wide Range is for SnS, you don't want to resheathe with the HH, you can just run around with your sweet dragon guitar out the entire time and run rings around things while you play music via concussive smashes anywhere you please on the monster.

The fact that it gives absurd party buffs is a nice perk on the side, not the main reason to use it at all.

Any quest you've found on Kiranico that says it has 1% chance to drop it actually has 100% chance to drop it, with 1% chance to drop an extra one.
